Agree. I was there on a bleak winters day at the Western Oval 91`to view 1 goal 10 (Arceri game). Walked back to the car to cop a parking ticket for being too close to a fire hydrant.

Ken Sheldon's first game (1977?) was against Geelong at Princess Park. It bucketed down all day, rain, hail, freezing cold, and the ground was under water. Final score was Carl 3.13 to Geel 2.12. I'm pretty sure that Sheldon kicked one of our 3 goals, and wore number 37.

I too recall that game, was it 1 goal to nothing at half time maybe ?
Was the coldest i have ever been at the footy, and i went to a lot
of games over a lot of years, gawd that was miserable day indeed.
Spectators should have got paid that day i reckon !!

My memory (which may or may not be accurate, given that I was 9 at the time) is that the only time it stopped raining all day was at half time.

Amazing that a team with such stars couldn't make the finals.

I agree about the Western Oval....one day we were in the outer on the terracing on the Geelong Road side; and the icy wind was belting into our backs.

At half time we left.......bloody freezing.

Thanks for the link Moshe, interesting thesis. I was a little too young to really know what was going on back then. My first season was 1975 as a 7 year old.

I do, however, distinctly remember Jezza's first game as coach, at Victoria Park. I think we one by 17 points? I remember cutting out the headline and pic from The Age and sticking it up on my wall - the headline reading 'Jezza's blue magic spells Magpie gloom'.

I went to that game and stood near the coaches box on the wing and breathed a sigh of relief when Arceri goaled - I remember reading that his opponent for the day Steve 'Super' McPherson was a shattered man after the game as they made a pact at 3/4 time to keep us goalless.

Moshe that is brilliant and encapsulates that period brilliantly - for mine the "Southby-itis" ended in Round 7 in 1978 with that 17 point win against Collingwood at Victoria Park.

Jezza gave the boys jobs and they went out and did them - it was as simple as that.

Six or seven terraces back, behind the goals at the Heatley stand end. (Blight's goal sailed over our heads.....)

Why is it that I can remember the scores and margins from games over 30 years ago, but I can't remember what I did last Thursday? :donk:

I still say it was no more than 60 metres. But it still drove a dagger through my heart.
