As Juddy is being referred to in hushed tones in the media as one of the greatest ever, it's worth noting that he's arguably THE best poller on Brownlow night in VFL/AFL history.
- 162 career votes (11th overall)
- Averages 0.88 votes per H&A game (best since Bunton in the 30s)
- 185 H&A games prior to 2011 - 0.875 votes per game
-His 8 year stretch from 2003-2010 is comfortably the best run of Brownlow votes over an extended continuous number of years. 162 votes in 164 games! After his first season (in which he played 22 games with no votes), Judd has polled a vote per game!. BTW at Carlton Judd has polled 68 in 62 games (1.097/game).
-If you take the 7 years from 2004-2010 he's polled 150 votes in 142 games (1.056/game). Interestingly, Judd was aged 20-26 in this period, the same age range as Bunton's career.
You'd think that Judd's average votes/game will fall as his career winds down, but it might go up for a few years yet! If he polls 19 votes this year he'll pass Skilton to move to 4th on the all-time list or 3rd if you adjust Matthews' total downwards for the 76-77 anomaly.
Gary Dempsey scored 177.5 from 1970-80 in 224 games (0.794/game) and 216.5 from 70-83 in 289 (0.751) which are both impressive testament to playing at the highest level for a long time (again, adjusted 76-77 votes by dividing by 2).
Hayden Bunton Sr has the best career record at the Brownlow: 3 wins and 1.025 votes/game over his career. 122 in 117 games in his 7 year career at Fitzroy, Bunton is the only player to match Judd's Brownlow dominance. His votes were scored in 18 game seasons, so need to look at votes per game played rather than votes/season.
Most votes in consecutive seasons:
3 yrs 75 R. Harvey
4 yrs 91 R. Harvey
5 yrs 105 Judd
6 yrs 120 Judd
7 yrs 150 Judd
8 yrs 162 Judd
9 yrs 162 Judd
10 yrs 162.5 Dempsey
11 yrs 177.5 Dempsey
12 yrs 183.5 Dempsey
13 yrs 199.5 Dempsey
14 yrs 216.5 Dempsey
If he polls well this year, Judd will have caught Dempsey's best 12 year sequence in 9 years
24 votes will beat Harvey's best 3 yr and 4 year sequences. So a lot of geeky excitement riding on this year's Brownlow count...
BTW this is not exhaustive, if I've missed another player with a better record let us know
As they say, the umpire's always right
