I think St Kilda have a bigger issue worrying about who to play on Waite (in our forwardline) than we have worrying about who to play on Riewoldt.
Waitey destroyed them last year.
Smash them in the middle (like we should) and it won't be a problem.

You'd think with Dawson out that we would try and exploit their lack of height down back (Gwilt next in line if I'm not mistaken)

Bring Thronton in to play CHF. Having Waite and Walker down forward as a bit of 'sameness' about it with both trying to leap and take the big mark. Both are athletic forwards not strong key marking types. Thornton is a very good pack mark and reads the ball as well as anyone coming in. He, Warnock, Walker, Setanta, Betts, Garlett, Robbo & Russell pushing through the fwd line will cause St Kilda lot so headaches and if we struggle we can always push Waite back there!

You make some good points, but can't help feeling we should persist with Waitey down forward..and keep it constant.
I'm not convinced...but always have the feeling he's about to step up to the elite.
Lately I've thought it won't happen..and just accept he is mercurial.
But..I think if we hold out..he might just step up.

I understand with your comments BG and there are definite reasons to keep him forward. The issue I have about Waite (and I am a huge fan) is that he is the type of player that to be consistent need to play behind the ball. Yes, he is good enough to play forward and at times will carve oppositions up (as will Waker) but will that get the best out of him? and is he the best option? Thornton although not as flashy will be a consistent target and fit and firing Henderson and Kruezer will also be great additions. Then do we have both Waite and Walker there as well?

Great sides are built around a great defence, and with Bower having real injury issues, a defence lead by Jamo and Waite with a developing Watson surrounded by Armfield, Touhy, Yarran, Duigan, Laidler, Gibbs, Russell etc would be pretty impressive and be able to match up on anyone.

Just my opinion but a nice problem to have!

I'd say their problem down back is more speed rather than height.

Back 6 something like: Fisher, Gilbert, Blake, Goddard, Baker, Gwilt.

A really slow back 6 but Blake, Fisher, Goddard and Gilbert are all very good in the air. Those boys will handle Setanta and Hendo, Waite less so but manageable.

Where they'll get blown away is by Garlett and Betts as they have no real match ups. Baker doesn't have the pace and he'll try to just rough them up which doesn't work with these boys. With the press on, the saints will get killed over the back if they lose the midfiled battle. Something the Blues have really excelled in this season. Need to stop Montagna and Del Santo on the outside, the Blues will own the inside.

Walker has stayed down for the most part in the last two games. In doing so he's created better pressure, and a better lead-up option, as well as an extra crumb.

I say stick with Waite forward.

Stick with the current forward set up id say. Get the ball in long and deep to an area that gives us the highest chance of scoring and lowest chance of being scored against on the rebound.
Key is not get outmarked. Everything else is a win as we can either mark, hold it in or pinch it off them on the way out as they we will have so many players they need to get through. Then hit them on the scoreboard when they are all out of wack.
At the minute our current set up is good. We have the bonus of Walker being able to play small and tall. He can create a contest on high balls and bring the ball down (hence the screamer attempts) and he can keep the pressure on at ground level and he can snag a sharp goal. He can also provide a midfield chop out late in quarters. This allows us to play Betts as a small forward only.

Waite is our best option as a presenting tall CHF/FF. Would be handy to play him back but we have to be on the front foot.
Carlos playing the Leigh Brown role for now until K is ready or Hampsons hand recovers and he finds form.
Garlett pushing up as a high half forward.

This should get the job done in my opinion. Their forward line is a worry though so we will have to be on our game in the midfield and in defense.

Dont be suprised if Lyon applies the uber flood and makes this one a low scoring ugly affair. Not sure they have the speed on the rebound to worry us like the crows did but i can still see Lyon trying this tactic.

I reckon if he does that, this will play into our hands, I think we will kill them at the clearances. Do not see they can rebound fast enough so this is our game for the taking.

If we take them on like the Bumbers did, then with our superior pace we really have a chance to run them off their feet. A few early goals and I believe their confidence will be shot. They still have their "summer hangover" we just need to remind them of it by burning them with speed.

Go Bluebaggers.

BTW I am new to the forum but have followed it for a long time, until recently it was hard to get many games live in China but now we get 6 games live and the other 2 on about 1 hour delay. This has got me all fired up now I can see the Mighty Blueboys every week. Sorry about the blurb, I am just so fired up !!!!

If you were Thronton at the moment you would have reason to be pissed off. Henderson has been extremely poor so far this year and Thornton has played some very good footy not to mention kicking goals including 6 last week. But Hendo is selected ahead of him. Ridiculous!

They're both options due to concerns for White & Laidler.

Hendo as a defender it would seem.

My tip is it'll be just the one change with Yarran in for Joseph, and Robinson as the sub.

Happy for him to play as a defender but a bit strange considering he has been playing mostly fwd in the Bullants. Surely form has to stand for something?

Who else are we going to play after Watson? It's Henderson, Thornton & McCarthy; Hendo's the big body out of those three, and the best kick.

Why bring in an out of form player to play in defence? Reckon Yarran and Watson or Yarran alone will be the change/s....
