AJ did last year (although it would seem he would probably be the one to make way for Yarran).

Hamstring injury and the BYE coming up followed by Geelong. Throw in the fact AJ did the job on Milne last time I'd leave Yarran out.

I'd go with the same side that beat Sydney. Setanta offers more then Hampson does around the ground as well.

Jamison or Reiwoldt
AJ On Milne

No Dawson.

Collingwood was credible
Essendon* was a pass mark.
Adelaide was a lesson learnt from the week before.
Sydney was a further improvement again.

If we want a top 4 spot this is not a test for us it's a no brainer we have to win it. Simple as that. St Kilda will throw everything at us but we have to stand up. I think it a real test for us. Favourites tag has not sat well with us this year.

Spot on! Agree with everything said here

Yup.

Plain and simple, if we wanna be a serious contender and a genuine Top 4 team then this game is a must win. The Saints are woeful this season, to play them into form would be a disgrace.

I'd probably leave Yazza out though, give him a few weeks to rest. We're gonna need him fit and healthy after the bye, especially for the geelong game!

It looks likely that Riewoldt will play, which I see as a good thing. I wanna beat these guys fair and square and without any excuses.

He's had a 16 day rest, he has to play if fit. The most effective weapon against the Saints is speed.

LIke to see Hendo come in with a view to swing him back and bring White forward for at least some of the game. Put Hendo behind the ball.

Outs based on fitness: if Laidler sore then out, otherwise AJ (prefer Army on Milne as will make him more accountable than AJ). Robbo looks like he may need a break.

In: Yarran, Hendo
Out: Laidler/AJ, Robbo

Is Laidler sore? White has done well but is struggling with knee issues.

Agree with Yarran, if fit plays, if not doesn't.

I am a Hendo fan but can't be picked on form. Something not right with him at the moment? and Robbo has been very good IMO.

In: Yarran, Thornton, Watson
Out: Laidler, AJ, White

Put Duigan on Milne! Will physicallly bully him, get into his head and run off him. Mind you love to see Zac Touhy on him! :smoking:

B: Armfield Jamison Duigan
HB: Yarran Watson Gibbs
C: Simpson Curnow Scotland
HF: Russell Thornton Garlett
F: Betts Waite Walker
Foll: Warnock Judd Murphy
Int: Ellard Robinson Setanta (Lucas)

LA, i agree with your theory, however, instead of Hendo i reckon we should bring in Watson as from reports posted he is certainly in better form than Lachie and I would like him to have a good run in the seniors.

White up forward is a good option as he has certainly shown that he knows his way around the forward line, however, i am sure I read somewhere on TC that he pulled up badly after the Sydney game and might be on crutches? Which would really suck!!!

Can we not avoid injuries to our tall stocks sometime soon?!!? :banghead:

We will smash the Saints like last years Monday night game. 10 goals plus

Hayes is the heart and soul of their team and with him gone, they are gone... Regardless of the media hype, they'll struggle to win a game in the next 8 weeks.

Hard to drop anyone from last weeks brilliant game, but with Ratten declaring Yazz will be right for this game (pretty sure he said this just before or just after the Sydney win) and having 16 days to get over a "precautionary" benching, he'll expose them running out of the backlne.

In: Yazz, Out: AJ

Not sure why all the Robbo bashing here... He's been awesome this year and far more composed than previous years. We have a 10 day break then another 11 day break, he's tough and he'll cope...

Carlton Football Club
Brett Ratten's press conference has just concluded. A couple of important things were said:

- Chris Yarran will come into the side this week. He's recovered from his hamstring injury.

- Brock McLean won't come in. He still needs to show a couple of things at VFL level.

- Matthew Kreuzer will come back through the reserves. He might resume playing next week.

Ratten just finished press conference.

Yarran is in this week.

I'm thinking a return of Setanta and his little helpers.

The speed of Yazz, Jeffy, Eddie, Army and co ripped the Aints a new one this time last year... Dont see anythign different in their side this year to suggest they have the players to counter this from happening again. Let's see how their pathetic 'Saints Footy' will go against our mighty in form mids, Setanta, Waitey and The Brothers...

I REALLY like those changes. Kosi the perfect match up for Watson. It's hard to outsmart someone when you don't have a brain. Watson will run rings around him physically.

In that structure, Thornton becomes what he should have been all along - the third tall defender.

Yarran for AJ = no brainer. Unless they are setting AJ for Milne, in which case someone else makes way. I don't think Duigan is the right matchup for Milne - Milne will turn him inside out. Milne requires someone nimble.

I would like to see a blistering 1st 1/4. Dominance and accuracy.
Crush their spirits for the rest of the game.

A bit more info from a very informative interview -

Quote:
Ratten agreed the excitement at Visy Park over Kreuzer's imminent return to action had been tempered by key defender Paul Bower's latest injury setback.

The 23-year-old will be sidelined indefinitely after picking up his umpteenth soft-tissue injury, this time to a quad.

Ratten said the club may need to look for radical solutions to Bower's problems.

"We've been fairly proactive in having a look Paul's issues, but sometimes they're ones that we don't even see coming," Ratten said.

"The sports science side and the medicos together will try to work out whether it's his running gait, is it something with his posture?"

"We're having a look behind the scenes to see if there's something we can tap into to try and get him back on track."

Quote:
Ratten conceded there are no vacancies at the moment in the Carlton midfield for Brock McLean who's pushing hard for promotion.

"Mentally Brock's getting more relieved because I think he's seeing in his own performance (in the VFL) his run really come back into his game," Ratten said.

"He's getting over the ground a lot more and spreading a lot more which is something that we want to see."

"His ball-winning ability in close, that hasn't diminished, but we would like him to win a bit more ball outside and defend a bit more outside which he's worked on hard."

I reckon it's great that Brock has to earn his way back and it's a credit to both Curnow and Ellard that this is the case....

Team selection is a two way street.

You can get dropped for playing badly.

You can get promoted for playing well.

Teams that are struggling tend to emphasise reserves form. In other words looking for form players that might boost the team.

Teams that are doing well will emphasise seniors form.

At Carlton that is turning around. Now that the team is performing at a higher level seniors players know getting dropped does not mean ripping it up for one week in the twos before getting a gig again. If you get dropped now you might be gone for an extended period. The team is winning and there are lots of players that are not in the senior team competing for a spot. If anyone drops off in the seniors team even for one week there are many options for replacement. It is the competition within the competition that adds that extra few percent.

Seems to be a bit of premature head wobbling going on here. I'm liking the way we are playing as of late, but some 7 days ago people on here were lamenting the way we were playing post the adel game.
While I note there are some seriously encouraging signs, let's remember we have beaten 2 bottom 4 teams and 2 mid range ones.
The longer we remind ourselves that we have achieved nothing, the more hungry and consistent we will be every single week.

What Juddy said.

And it will, hopefully, be beneficial for Brock as well.

He's gunna be one hungry bugger when he gets his chance - and, importantly, will have the miles in his legs.

Thinking about it I would really like to see Waite go back on Reiwoldt. Has the athletic ability to go with him and will run off him and create. Leaves Jamo, Watson/Laidler, Duigan to assist and pick up secondary players.

Bring Thronton in to play CHF. Having Waite and Walker down forward as a bit of 'sameness' about it with both trying to leap and take the big mark. Both are athletic forwards not strong key marking types. Thornton is a very good pack mark and reads the ball as well as anyone coming in. He, Warnock, Walker, Setanta, Betts, Garlett, Robbo & Russell pushing through the fwd line will cause St Kilda lot so headaches and if we struggle we can always push Waite back there!

You make some good points, but can't help feeling we should persist with Waitey down forward..and keep it constant.
I'm not convinced...but always have the feeling he's about to step up to the elite.
Lately I've thought it won't happen..and just accept he is mercurial.
But..I think if we hold out..he might just step up.
