Apparently, when 18 players are inside our F50, they call it.....now let me think.....it's a new fad that's come in....a yes, they call it a 'flood'. That's a funny name. Must be a new strategy in vogue this year. Gee I hope our brains trust can thwart this. Neil Craig must be at the forefront of tactical response.
Maybe we can use it when the opposition are getting on top of us. Just a thought?

Have a look at the desperation of Curnow,Judd,Simmo,Murphy,Robbo etc.

Gibbs is an outside Mid and this is the role he has been asked to play by the coaching staff. The guys you mentioned are inside mids (Murph debatable). Not all players can be inside mids or who would the insiders have to pass the ball out to. The outside mid is a legit position. Whether he is playing that role well or not is another question entirely.

Even Dale Thomas can impose himself on the contest when needed. Dale !@#$%& Thomas.

Collingwood have turned Dale Thomas into an A grader. Forget the hair. He gut runs and makes space. right now, Gibbs is not even in his ballpark

Frustrating night.

Game should have been over when Judd instead hit the post from 15 out in the first quarter. That's life.

Thought our backline looked as well structured and fluent in it's movement of the ball as it has for a long while, even in the face of the uberflood. Full credit to Gavin Brown there. Starting to wonder if Bower is a necessity to return.

Lot of positives to take out of the game I thought. David Ellard's game was fantastic, really happy to see him get his just rewards for some good form in the twos. Real benefit to having Ellard in the side is having a midfielder who kicks goals. Something we don't have a lot of.

Walker's game was encouraging too, but also a product of things coming together tonight, and getting the rub of the coin. The silly marks stuck, the ball rolled out to the silly areas where he runs to. Was a lethal set shot for goal tonight, certainly had the kicking boots on. Far more pressing issues for the time being than Walker. I thought moving him out of the forward line was the match changer (can't fault Ratts here - hands were tied with Yarran going off)...and then Craig's bizarre decision to play Tambling on Waite in the last, swung it again. Again to give credit where credit's due, Ratts sending Russell forward was handy too.

Simpson's last quarter reminds me the Simpsons episode where Bart drops the catch in the little league game and they kept giving him the do-over. No matter what, just couldn't make amends. Good game regardless.

Juddy didn't look right tonight. Kicking looked a bit restricted, running looked a bit labored at times. Hopefully nothing too serious?

Reckon Robbo might have hit the wall, and the bye can't come quick enough for him. The famous Robbo second/third efforts were lacking a couple of times tonight, not through effort, but just not having anything left in the tank. A candidate for the sub for next week

Gibbs was embarassing. Anyone want to say he doesn't remind you of Travis Johnstone without the marijuana and gambling habits? Can't even call him a front runner, as he never runs. The way he escorted someone to the ball and then jogged alongside watching them set up Adelaide's first goal tonight, was Mick Mansfield-esque.

Thought Warnock beat Jacobs pretty comfortably tonight, and then Jacobs absolutely smashed Hampson. If there's any ground we could probably get away with not having a second ruck, it's the SCG..

Same shit different week for Betts, Gibbs Hampson...

Surely Jamo has to get his due as one of the most improved players in the competition. He's bordering on the competition's best.

Sydney will smash us, which at this time of the year presents a good opportunity for a wake up call, and a shake up of the 22.

After the last 7 years, how many more wake up calls do we need?

With all the extra work he does, Judd really needs to spend some time working on his set shot kicking for goal.

Fair enough.

I saw him come off injured at one stage, but then he came back on. Didn't think there was any need at that point to bring him off if he was good enough to come back on.

Cheers guys.

All sorted.

Collingwood struggled last year when adelaide went the flood. Geelong struggled in round one when saints flooded. Essendon* i havent seen against the flood.

When you think about it flooding is a good tactic to apply against the forward press. If teams want to press up and flood their own forward line it seems like a good tactic to flood back and make it impossible for the pressing team to find space if they win the ball back. Key is to have an A1 transition plan. If you can get ahold of it in a bit of space and can run it hard the other way like the crows do then the flooding has merit.

The league is even. Each week you dont know what you are going to get with a team. The crows lost last week to sh1tty port but a few weeks back they chinned the Hawks.

We did well enough to win which is great. Had we converted better in the first half we would have smashed them.

My worry is this poor converting has happened a bit. There is a pattern. Not sure you can blame the coach for this . Perhaps you can blame him for putting together a team of players who cant get the job done around goals. Perhaps he should have weeded out the culprits over the last 3 years. ...but then again judd is a culprit.

What will people say if we change coaches and we still miss around goals? Do we change coaches again?

Ratts will be judged on wins. So far he has 3.5 out of 5 games. Not bad.

Let me put it this way.

They flooded clogging the F50. Even when a CFC player found the smallest amount of space to slot into inside 50 the Carlton player kicking it inside couldn't hit the side of the barn. Those were 2 simple facts. We could beat the flood if the execution was better but it wasn't.

It doesn't matter what sort of game plan you have if the disposal falls away across the board like it did at times tonight. All you can do is hope to tough it out like they did and hope for some inspiration. He pushed Jordy forward and he got some magic from Simmo and Ellard and there you have a tough win.

Posters keep talking about having a forward structure but at the moment we are still pinch hitting to some degree because of the following.....

Injury - Kreuz, Houls
Form - Hendo, Eddie, McLean, Setanta, Lucas, Armfield
Inconsistancy of Effort - Gibbs, Hammer

Walker was the hero yesterday but he has been his own worst enemy in other games.

Sure we could bring in T-Bird but I think that just makes us tread water more. Some want to bring in Watson but he still has plenty of aspects in his game to work on in the VFL. That was clear in yesterdays VFL game. If you want to make him another Livo then all we need to do is kill him in the 1st year of his career.

The defense isn't the real problem because even with the 3 big forwards the Crows had we still kept them to a losing score. And that was done with some inexperienced but seasoned defenders.

The main offenders for the poor disposal yesterday were the majority of senior players. When that is a case all the Coach can do is hope they get their act together sooner rather than later.

We are winning ugly with a team that really needs all it's players firing to get us over the line in big games.

Vigorous co-sign.

Skill execution last night after the first 20 mintues was absolutely deplorable. I didn't realise this at the game, but I heard on the radio later on that in one stretch we kicked 2 goals 15 points. That's not coaching, that's just a collective brainfart by the playing group. Just about every key statistic we had Adelaide covered. The players simply failed to execute last night. Simple as that.

I must admit I am frustrated with the team at the moment. Why? Because when we are 'on' we look really good, sublime almost but then we go and play some really bad stupid footy that is not acceptable in a bush league.

In every game ( GC game excepted) this year we have put ourselves in positions we shouldn't have through our own ineptitude. This has allowed the opposition to impose themslves on the game. It is simply frustrating. I don't mind losing to teams who are claerly better on the day but to salvage a draw in one and have to fight back to win antoher game that should have been in hand at half time when we are clearly the better team is just not platable. If this is not sorted out pronto it will cost us bigtime when the crunch games come.

As we have all said footy is just as much a game between the ears and I think we are still struggling in this respect. We have improved - we would have lost last night any other time - but we seem to lack that killer instinct other teams have.

We seem to roll to leads then wait for the other team to lose, then we panic and start making bad decisions and I'd bet our poor kicking is partly influenced by this too.

Curnow is 21 and was on Adelaide's Rookie List in 2008, not 1998 as suggested by The Age.. The Rookie List didnt even exist back then did it ?

I'm the first to admit I know nothing about gameplans, strategies and structures. Anyway, I do know we struggled last year from the time North flooded our forward line.

So my question: providing we have good disposal and key forward options back up and running, do we have a gameplan which can now beat the flood?

Cazz, you make valid points but our forward line has been an issue for years.
Our defenders are doing their job.
If Coll struggled with flooding, why didn't StK flood them to the heavens in the GF? And if they did, Coll found a way.
Our mids need to start spreading opp defences which will leave our regular forwards with more opportunities. anyway off to Easter lunch
Happy Easter to all TC'ers

I have been a Ratts fan for a while now and I suppose I still am .... not a big enough footy brain to know if he is really doing a great job or not but I have to admit his placid manner and not putting a rocket up a few players bums who need it is worrying me greatly.

I hope Gibbs can start showing why he was picked at no.1 he is a talent but even the most brain dead supporters can see he needs a rocket! Time for a statement Ratts.

I was happy with last night ... we won nuff said. I had a sneaking feeling they would come back after Judd missed that goal. He is a superstar so not going to say much about that.

GArlett had a decent game regardless of what some say on here ... could have finished with 3-4 with a bit more luck.

Personally I think the boys showed a great deal tonight but also chocked a bit as well made too many nervous skill errors towards the end ... then again it looked like everyone was exhausted, off their feet.

Those goals by JR and Ellard were what I want the team to be about ... pure grit .. never say die attitude.

In the end if we kicked even a little bit straighter this would have been a no contest.

We are travelling well .... but Ratts needs to get some b@stard into him.
