I think any assertions or conclusions from this game re: our coach need to be carefully considered and not just jump on last year's second result.

To me Knights was a terrible coach. To me fans who said Essendon* had a terrible list had their heads in the sand - they have a great crop of up & coming KPPs and a very good depth in outside flankers who can kick a goal. I hate Reimers but Zaharakis and Monfries are good running flankers who can take a mark and most definitely can kick a goal. Get them in space and they will carve us up like they did in the first game.

Now their injuries are under control and they have a man who is most likely not going to end up a terrible coach. They've had as much draft access as us over the past 6-7 years, perhas even better, as they were able to offload Lovett for a large gain (recognise some of the benefit was given up in the Williams trade). They have a good team with good skills and will be coming for us.

Essendon*'s trial with Knights was a lovely little deviation from Essendon* being a well managed powerhouse. I enjoyed it.

I'll give you Ryder, Hurley and Pears.

They can keep the rest of their big men.

Pears' broken foot could end up as chronic as Matthew Egan's injury.

Gumbleton has talent, but was born under the same sun as Mark Austin.

lets get serious here waite MUST GO BACK, sick of being undersized down there. Henderson and bower should come in so henderson to CHF waite to CHB bower to a flank, russell on the other thats a decent CHB line.. laidler and duigan/thornton out, hampson has to stay in to combat hille and ryder.. stop hurley ryder and watson and you stop Essendon*

I agree with this totaally, when he was down there he was in all aus form and was unreal down back. Then you can always throw him up forward at times. I thing him down back would sure up our defence and bringing hendo back in would be just as good as waite has been at CHF. I also really like Ellard i think we need to get him back in the team asap!!

I am worried this Saturday as I think they have a very good list and seem to have a lot of motivation unlike late last year when we flogged them

They have a shithouse list.

No talent (other then Jobe) through the midfield and will get majorly shown up in the coming weeks whether it's by us or not. They're simply playing a overly attacking game the same as their best under Knights, and won't be able to keep it up consistently over the year

I wish I could agree.
They have a lot of talent, a lot of growing room, and a lot of spirit.(unfortunately.)

Waite & Hendo up forward.
There wont be a change to this philosophy any time soon. Get used to it and move on

JR Jamo Watson
Yarran Laidler Lucas
Scotland Judd Curnow
Garlett Hendo Carrazzo
Betts Waite Hammer

Warnock Gibbs Murphy

Collins Robbo Simmo
Sub: T-Bird

In - Hendo, Lucas
Out - Walker, Duigan

Backline looks inexperienced still. In his best form, Bower's in our best 18 - but I think he needs another game in the VFL to find some confidence/match fitness. White could be in the mix but I think Laidler & Watson's form has been good enough to keep him out for now. They are better kicks and defend body-on-body just as well as he does. Watson won't last all season, so we need Bower & White to keep putting pressure on the MC with strong VFL form...

Duigan struggled last week and might benefit from a spell in the VFL to work on a few aspects of his game. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if the MC persist with him for another week. Anyway, I have replaced him with Lucas. Different sorts of players, but I liked Lucas' game for the Bullants last week. I say select him while he's in form (unlike we did in Round 1). However, the MC might go a different way and bring in AJ (who also played well for the Bullants last week) to do a specific shut-down job in defence.

I very nearly brought in Ellard for Collins, but I'm not sure if there's room for Ellard, Curnow, Carrazzo, Robbo and Murphy in the same side. Ellard needs to be playing AFL however, so hopefully he gets a game soon. Collo's career at Carlton got off to a shaky start last week, but I'd like to see him get another game to see if he can give us anything as that taller runner player.

I like the starting forward line of Hendo, Waite & Hammer/Warnock - with Garlett & Betts buzzing around them.

I've gone against the precident set in the early rounds by selecting a taller player, T-Bird, as the Sub. T-Bird, Waite, Jamo & Laidler are all mobile types who can play on smaller opponents (and at either ends of the ground) if need be, so I don't think it makes us too tall. Should give us more strategic flexibility.

A few players that we really need to lift this week - Betts (needs to step up in a big game), JR (if he's injured, don't play him), Waite (having Hendo in the side might help him, but he might need to go behind the ball if their midfield gets on top, in order to protect our suspect & inexperienced defence), Carrazzo (might get a big job as a defensive forward, and needs a good game because Armfield & Ellard are knocking on the door), Warnock/Hammer (if we can control the ruck + either or both of these guys can hold a few marks in front of goals, it takes us a long way towards victory).

We'll need a lot of things to go right for us this week because this mob are on fire. Whether we like to admit it or not, they are one of the 'form' teams of the competition. Aside from the big win late last season, I think they have beaten us something like the previous 6 times in a row. They match-up well against us. I see this as being just as big a test for us as last week (in a different way).

Not sure if this has been discussed already, but hopefully Alan Richardson's intimate knowledge of the Bummers' list will help our planning this week....

The problem is they won't drop these two despite being a liability. Yes, even Hammer, our new Adrian DeLuca. When he takes marks its accidental, and when he kicks goals its because he closed his eyes and prayed.

I hope he now comes out and makes an idiot of my comments on the weekend.

He doesn't need to!

I agree with tekno.

Hammer is an amazing athlete, but right now, he's not much more than that.
I doubt we'd drop him before Kruz comes back, but in saying that, he's got much to improve on B4 he's getting games over other talls.
Carrazzo?..….... Well hes just got to go full stop!!!

Lots of passionate posts here, can tell how much we "rate" this weeks opponent !

Reckon the MC may be in a right pickle at selection.
Henderson in is a no brainer, Ellard and Bower must be 50/50.
Think they would be loathe to drop Collins or Watson but surely
Armfield will be in starting 22, Thornton ? Who knows.
Would love someone to reprise Robbo's role on Fletcher last year.

Mild rumour floating around that Hille may not come up for them.

Having said that, and read every previous comment on this game,
think its biggest of all for our coach.
This could be the first plank to go wobbly if we lose.
I hope like buggery we win.
Dont necesarily subscribe to the theory of assistant coaches now in
our box being a big advantage etc, we had Brown for us last week,
this week we have Richardson etc, take it further last time we
played them, they had Campo ?
Overrated the whole idea...... players make coaches, ask Pagan !!

I really want us to win, would be nice to get some credits in media
street, and to PROVE to all and sundry that WE are "ahead" of THEM !!

I've heard of an 8 point game JK but surely beating Ess isn't worth the equivalent of 6 wins???????????????

Because he played his best football there. As a forward he's inconsistent and if we're being honest mediocre.

He was moved forward again because he was inconsistent and often beaten down back. He is OK when playing as a loose back but his footskills and decision making dont afford him that luxury.
We need to get used to the fact that JW is a forward and that he will perform well at times and poorly at others. (often both occuring within the one quarter)
