What an incredible club we have when names like Des English, Alex Marcou, Wayne Harmes, David McKay, Peter Bosustow, Richard Dennis, Brad Shine, Jon Dorotich and Grant Povey turn up to a function when the blues are not actually playing in perth.

just shows how much these past players love the club and also what a great carlton city perth is...

On Friday, South Perth Bowling Club played host to our SoC function.

With a large turn-out of dyed in the wool Blues fans, plus a huge cast of past players, Richard Dennis (WA head of SoC and 87 Premiership player) was confident it was always going to be a great day.

Jon Dorotich once again did a fantastic job as Master of Ceremonies, asking the right questions to get some great stories going. Guests of Honour for the day, Des English, Alex Marcou and Wayne Harmes, had the audience intrigued and amused with some of their fabulous tales of the premiership years of 79, 81 and 82.

Thirty years later there is still a belief among all of the boys that we should have won 80 as well.

Adding to the atmosphere of the afternoon, we were fortunate to have several other Blues from that era in attendance. Peter Bosustow, David McKay, Ross Ditchburn, Denis Collins and Allan Montgomery all made it, with Buzz and Swan adding their own comments in question time.

Players from the mid 80's in Dorotich, Dennis, Shine, Da Rui and Povey all shared experiences from their time at the club with people on their tables. Given we were playing the arch enemy that night, a rousing reception was given to David McKay when Dorra announced that Swan is the only Blues player to have played in 3 winning grand finals against Collingwood!

While we all went off after the event hoping for a win that night, alas it was not to be. But the signs are very promising..... If the current crop of players have a bond as strong as the past players share, one thing is a definite - the Spirit of Carlton is alive and well.

Thanks to the boys for flying across for the event, and Bob Lowrie for arranging it.

Thanks to all the supporters for coming along. Also a huge thanks to caterer Jo and her team for the great food, and the local committee (Paul, Ian, Garry, Warren) for your help on the day.

Read an article the other day saying the Buzz is struggling to make ends meet working at his son's car detailing business. I had the number 4 on my jumper as a kid because he was my all-time Carlton hero.

Interesting to note the article talking about the camaraderie of the WA boys in past Carlton teams. There is a decent contingent of them at the moment - the likes of Jeffy, Armfield and Yarran who have known each other since junior days - hopefully it's incentive for them to stick around together and help push us towards that next premiership.

Sad to hear that about Buzz, if he played in todays footy he would have been a millionaire - he would have been endorsing products left, right and centre. He had a massive profile whilst playing at the Blues, and is still remembered fondly by those who were lucky to see him play those 3 years with the Blues.

Was lucky enough to visit a Carlton function in 1996 and we are without doubt the best supported of any non WA club.

Everything organised well and great guests for pre-match functions.

Went to a few games at Subiaco during the dark era and was always suprised at the amount of Carlton support.

Also Fremantle supporters are my favourite opposition supporters by far. Pi$$ funny and always up for a chat.

Mind you they were flogging us quite easily back then.....
