it was great to see the boys have a kick this arvo and even better ti see hammer working on kicking straight and getting them in between to two big sticks. although he did still drop a few sitters that seemed to just pop out.

The new boys are looking great, was good to see them have a run other than that nothing stood out from training, looks like tomorrow will be a good game

Goodness me.

The flip side of that is you've got about 14 names on the team sheet who didn't even feature for them last season. Matera & Toy barely played for them while they finished schooling commitments, so I'm counting them. Swallow polled well in the Liston so he's not going to be a slouch, one of the better #1 picks for quite some time.

That said, I've never seen such an undermanned defence, particularly when they have the personnel to load it up better. We should smash them if we hold our marks.

Interesting that Richmond's team against the Saints have played fewer average games than the Suns this week.

Now I'm REALLY worried.

You're not putting that into context. Toy is already 85 kilos at about 184 cms, so he's not going to fall down like a deck of cards, and Matera would be about 80, with zip and skill up in the forward 50.

Some of these kids have really benefited from the extra year under the watch of a professional fitness program.

Righto. Guess we'll both find out tomorrow whether the big, bad schoolies, fresh from a grueling year of Ivan Dragoesque training regimes, are better than our puny 20-somethings with several preseasons under their belt.

Is it really just me who sees the absurdity of this mismatch?

Anything less than a 10 goal win will astound me. And I really want to type 20 goals there but you'll think I'm winding you up.

Players like Rischitelli, Brennan, Brown, Fraser, Bock and Ablett aint no schoolies... Take the Suns lighty at our own risk... We must approach this game mentally as if we're playing Collingwood. Switched on and 'uncompromising' (our buzz word for 2011) from first to last siren. Do this and we're sure to win.

..honestly, we should monster them.. ..they're recruited afl players are underdone [in varying stages].. ..bock isnt as good as he was, and even back then he was only good for a couple of seasons.. ..fraser isnt much chop.. ..alot of kids, and the listed team has bugger all experience playing together.. ..not up to speed afl tempo wise since they've never played a real afl game [pre-season isnt up to speed either].. ..and first game hype is counter balanced by judd's 200th milestone game.. ..our m idfields in good form and good condition.. ..and we're fitter.. ..especially with the way games seem to be headin' this season, our good runners will have that as a huge advantage..

I agree.

The fact they are playing 10 (IIRC) first gamers says enough, but even if we look at the boom recruits;

Ablett - Won't have the protection he had at Geelong, hasn't played a game in 6 months.
Brennan - Underdone and flaky at the best of times
Rischitelli - good footballer
Brown - underdone
Fraser - Hack. I mean seriously, he was all but delisted from the pies, suddenly he's expected to lead the GC against Warnock and Hampson?
Bock - underdone
Harbrow - underdone

Football these days is so much about having 22 solid performers, and teams with weak lower ends get found out. I think you could put the pies top 10 players with the gold coasts best kids and we would still give them a belting because footy just doesn't work that way. You need a full team of contributors... the GC don't have that yet, and won't all year.

If we are even half serious about challenging for top 4 then this should be a very ugly result.

For the record, Jack was underdone last week too.

Let's not assume anything of their players and just go out and smash them. Let the commentators worry about who was unfit or not.

Underdone playing full forward, not positions where endurance is required.

Where has this myth come from that we need to play more than one ruck sprung from?

On the flipside where did the myth come from that it is not an advantage to have 2 bonafide ruckmen, or 3 if they are faster than most smalls, multi dimensional and in good form?

Cox played a lone hand last week (admittedly against midgets), Sandilands very rarely has support when fully fit, Mumford is going it alone this week...

Perhaps it has something to do with depth and injury.

...the Dogs decided to go with Hudson solo last week instead of playing Minson or Roughead...

and the big story to come from that was the attributes given towards (supposedly) the best ruck combo in the comp: the Dogs were demolished and proved Hudson couldn't do it alone

...meanwhile I think Leigh Brown's contributions in the ruck are seriously overrated due to his tremendous upside in being able to play just about anywhere, it's essentially Jolly for 80% of the game.

They still need 2 ruckmen, and I agree fatso Brown has a big heart but against good ruckmen he is exposed. Luckily for Collingwood they have an innovative game plan and well drilled midfield

Essentially, I think a lot of the instantly dismissive idea that the earth is not round...emotive stuff there Rhino...and that two rucks must be played comes from all three of our rucks having cost a pretty penny, and that we want it to happen, rather than believing it makes good sense. Do you really believe that's what people think, or you think that's what they think, or is that comment made to strngthen your argument? Sorry, but that's baseless commentary.

Would we be hailing the necessity of two rucks if we had a tall utility that had proven his worth to pinch hit in the ruck? (i.e Setanta, but actually good in the ruck), imagine if Waite or Henderson had proven their worth in this measure? Hampson becomes an afterthought.

I don't want to see Waite and Hendo going up in the ruck... and yes it's great to imagine Hendo and Waite doing it when it's their turn, I just don't think they can ruck against bonafide ruckmen ala 195cm Cloke, Ackland types.

I think Hammer will need to develop, and develop quickly if is to hold his spot as the 2nd operating ruckman with Warnock when Kreuzer returns. He is showing really good signs and has improved, and just another 5% improvement may leave the football community gob smacked because physically there never has been anything like Hammer (when he takes that next step, as he's done this season, and improve another 5%. How old is he?

There's no reason why Hammer couldn't become that utility you're referring to; that's his challenge. But don't go and dismiss the possibility of Hammer making the grade in the Carlton team

Last I checked the comparison was as follows:

Avg Games Played:
GC = 23
Richmond = 52.4

Avg Age:
GC = 21 and 69 days
Richmond = 22 and 9 months

In fact Carlton has only an Avg Games of 50 and Avg Age of 22 and 343 days.

Let the media spin it how they want.

I'm guessing our team is full-strength this week?

So it's going to rain in the first quarter or half? That's probably not going to help us.

We are a notoriously bad wet-weather team.

Last rainy day i remember was against the Dees and we won by 41 pts after adjusting for the rain.
