Positives--
Judd and Murphy leading the way with clearances, excellent clearance work support from robbo, curnow, knockers and gibbs
Good Ruck Duo, works well as ruck/fwd partnership.. ..both knockers and hammer are also usually straighter kicks as well, they won't kick as poorly with the same chances in the future..
Not many touches, but for a debut i thought Duigan's attack on the ball and running to present an option was firstclass
Robbo, could see him as a potential inside mid, but never thought he could get that much of the ball, last out a game, and do it all so soon.. ..awesome inside work, uncompromising sort that just goes after the ball.. ..seems wired for that inside contested work, rather than roaming out in space..
Laidler looks like he's gonna suit our backline and how we want it to function very well..
Simpson and Scotland's consistency
small/med fwd line of betts, garlett and walker has serious speed/agility..with the congested stoppages, the rushed kick/bomb wildly into fwd 50 space will suit these 3s ability to pounce upon the loose ball and work it between them for a goal
more to mention.....
the petty man in me wants to thank grigg for his two assists as well.. ..as we know, can get the ball but still prefers to play very uncontested/outside when his kicking and decision making, plus build would deem him to be more inside
Negatives--
Yaz as a BP.. ..i reckon that back 50, especially deep,, makes it very very difficult to break a tag since usually the best way to break a tag is to work thru it/run them off.. ..and you cant really do that as a defender since ultimately yer gotta mind your opponent.. ..i understand the reasoning behind wanting to utilise him there, but think if he played Wing he could roam, and can always run back to help the defense work the ball forward, and out on a wing he can run off a tag and doesnt need to play as accoutable as a defender does.. ..not potting his game so much, i think it's gonna come down to more how he's utilised by the coaches in this role, vs how Yaz performs..
3rd quarter, tigers' dominance just went on too long.. ..them playing a bit better for a quarter sure.. ..but we were getting overrun, for that long is unacceptable..
Thornton.. ..i firmly believe that his greatest strength as a player now hinges upon his ability to read the incoming play, as the 3rd man up..he's good for spoiling that way, vs one on one contested bodywork.. ..i also believe that it's far too easy to play through his man this way and that for all his good service, modern day footy is beginning to show him up unfortunately.. ..couldn't help in the 3rd quarter, and it wwasnt until he played in front [in the 'hole'] in the 4th that he was able to be effective.. ..may have provided a target up fwd in the 3rd, can be a good mark and with our mids his good marking/avg fwd presence would get plenty of opportunity.. ..probably becoming more a potential depth fwd rather than back with watson/mcarthy getting developed and new recruits duigan/laidler
honestly not too many cons.. ..considered first half goal kicking, but difficult conditions last night, and one of those funky nights where for a half we kick poorly, and a bottom four team with shizen kicking skills are all crack aces in front of goals.. ..but it's round 1, working off the preseason rust.. ..dont wanna see it next week though..
sub rule.. ..i dont mind, and am actually a fan of both the concussion rule and the sub injury rule.. ..it's just i think having only 1 player to sub in is silly.. ..i'd basically carry the emergencies before the match into the match as the sub bench, and then you choose your 1 player off the sub bench.. ..that way you can bring in a runner, ruck, kpp..
