We gave a sucker an even break and might have paid the penalty for it but in the end but for our poor kicking for goal and their accuracy it should have been a no-contest.

Our midfield dominated for all but the third quarter and the forward line just needs a little more structure IMO - with Kreuz as the resting ruckman we will be flying.

Defence is the only real worry at the moment. I'd think though with Bower & Jamo back we will do better.

We are short on quality talls...having Kreuzer, Hendo, Bower, Jamo and Waite out by half time in a team that lacks quality talls is a massive testament to our powerful midfield.

Should have been over by half time.. Tigers will win a few games this year.

I wont
What I want to see is an improved structure
particularly into the forward line
that didnt happen
Ratten plays guys in the wrong positions
He has a poor feel for the game
We got over the line due to some individual brilliiance by a couple of players
Sounds familiar
People are talking about the fact that we had players out
Even taking that into account the peformance was poor given the oppositon

Your a typical blinkered supporter
you probably think that because Gibbs gets 30 possessions he is a star
he is a talented player who is as soft as warm butter

Dane this is the year we must improve
from what I saw last night we havent and the coach has to take the blame because he runs the show

Our skills last night were terrible for a so called top 4 side

We will win next week because we are playing a bunch of kids and one superstar but after that we are in big trouble

Your reasoning is no better here.
I do not feel that way about Gibbs. He is easing into his new role.
This is quite possibly Rattens last year, and we have started with a win no need to eat him alive just yet.
The problem was no spine. That is not all Rattens fault, missing KP players hurts. He was hamstrung from the start. In fact we didn't have any of our first choice spine for the majority of the game.
Having to play Thornton... ffs poor Ratts.

Poobah

Kick straight and it is the normal bloodbath...all that without our spine. The yips are the concern, not the structure. I really don't see how structure is the problem when so many of the misses were from good spots and by a number of different players.

If I thought that T-Bird and White were our first choice defensive pairing I would be concerned, but they aren't. Considering how much of the game was spent in our forward area and how few forward entries they had our forward press actually worked well. Better judges than you or I believe that this season the rucks will spend more time forward for all teams and that there will be more long kicking. For all that we shouldn't have been in that position, the big positive for me was the grit and determination shown when we looked dead and buried.

Grigg's ability to kick to Carlton players has really improved over summer.

A win's a win; backline though will take a few weeks to settle I think. Hendo will be an important focal point qhen he returns. There was quite a disconnect between the midfield kick and the inside 50 receive.

Garlett...what a gem

Talk about trying everything you can to lose a game - but thankfully, Judd, Murph and few others righted the wrongs of some earlier mistakes that allowed the Tiges to actually lead.

Good sides win ugly, and win games that they should probably lose which is a positive. But we do have a bit to work on. I thought we had a tackling coach over summer, you wouldn't have picked it with some of our lame attaempts.

Goalkicking......... we know enough about this without anymore being said. Hammer could've had a ripper game if he had of clunked a couple more he got his hands to and converted.

Curnow looks like a ripper, White I though battled manfully and did win some key contests in the last qtr when shifted back on to Jumping Jack.

Carrots was disappointing and looked underdone, but once out there you cant use that as an excuse. Robbo just kicks in hope and I was gob-smacked to see him listed in the votes in today's Herald-Sun.

I thought Warnock was good, and Betts and Garlett converted but at times it looked like we didnt have enough crumbers up fwd. Maybe the number of players the Tiges had back there made it look a lot worse than what it was.

Murph played a mighty game and Gibbs was fair to good, I thought his stats made his game look a lot better than what it was. Yazz was very quiet but the Tiges sat on him real hard. LAidler looks a long term prospect and Duigan battled hard.

But when the game was in the balance at the start of the last qtr, all's that i can say is "Cometh the Hour Cometh the Man. How good was Juddy last night. He stood up when we needed, but duiring the game he was tackling, harrassing, spoiling in defence etc. I have a lot of man love for that bloke.

I'll take the 4 points thanks.

It was an ugly win, but you still get 4 points anyway.
We dominated scoring opportunities and outplayed them for 3 quarters.
Shooting at goal was terrible but there was only 5 goals scored at the Punt Rd end for the game, none in the 2nd half.
There were some defensive and forward movements and structure that need tuning but its Rd 1. We had a unrecogniseable defence from last year, Yarran, Thornton, Duigan, laidler, White.
Our 2 best defenders are out. With waite going off early in the 2nd, our 2 best big forwards were out. Our best ruckman was out.

Lucky we have GC next week.

Went to the game last night, and whilst I am no footy guru, a did notice a few things:

They came back at us when Waite went down. I just wish maybe some of our other forwards could lead instead of sitting back and waiting behind the defender for the ball.

We got our act together in the final 1/4 when Thornton went to Reiwoldt and shut him down, so kudos to T-Bird for that, White tried, but ultimately failed to do the same thing. It was pretty obvious that Jack had White's measure, yet it took Ratts an entire freaking quarter to do something about it.

I could see Ratts tried having Warnock in the goalsquare, yet Warnock refused to stay there and kept running up the ground. There were a number of times that he should've stayed there and yet when the ball eventually got to the goalsquare, he was half way up the ground somewhere.

Our tackling is freaking abysmal, always has been, and I don't see any improvement in this area.

Our lack of a strong, tall leading forward hurts us every time. Hammer has the body for this, but he doesn't lead and needs to spend 8 hours a day for the next week taking set shots....in fact, make that the whole team needs to spend 8 hours a day taking set shots.

I have pretty much forgotten about this game already as most of us will by round 4.....I'll take the 4 points as they will be handy at year's end and that's all that matters right now.

A round 1 match where we dominated for most of the game except the scoreboard and a lot of things have changed over the years in football (forward press, zones, kicking to contests, rules etc) BUT one thing that doesnt change is that if you dont take your chances when you control parts of the game - you are susceptible...

Thornton did play better in the last but he wasnt on Jack. White was.

Agree about the tackling. And it was a focus over the pre-season apparently. Players still following the ball rather than going for the hips. As Shakira said "The Hips dont lie"

At least two of Riewoldt's goals came when he was on Thornton. He kicked nothing in the last because our midfield got right on top.

Thornton is certainly a player that would be loving each of the AFL's moves to make the game a non-contact sport. He's ahead of his time.
