Good call.

To be honest, none of the guys mentioned here that played in the living memory of most of TC's demographic did anything spectacular anywhere else.

Goddard, though, went to be the night before the draft thinking he could well be a Blue the next day. He's an absolute gun. And to make it worse, he seems like a class act in a club with so many shit blokes to go around that Milne still fits in.

I still hope there's a part of him somewhere that, when seeing the shitstains he's surrounded by and realising he is doomed at a place that knows nothing but failure, remembers that his blood is navy blue.

I'm also hoping Jennifer Hawkins returns my 'shoulder to cry on because Myer are flowers' calls

I think he also might have had a stint playing for "Her Majesty's First 18" in the early 90s.

Bomba, you uploaded the under 17's picture. Is there anything about how Russell found his way to Collingwood? I always thought Russell was a South Australian.

I dont have any information on that, you can only assume that the family moved over to SA (or back there) - I read somewhere that his grandfather Jack Cockburn was a gun footballer for South Adelaide in 30's and 40's. This was despite the fact that Scott Russell was recruited from Sturt, may have been in there zone??? The the Pies grabbed him, you'd think the Blues would have kept tabs on him after he moved if he was a promiisng junior???

Note: in the 1988 draft, the Blues gave away their first two pics for Glenn Hawker either of these could have secured Russell who was taken at pick 39.

PS - Nice avartar, looks liek a Porno Star from the 70's - Dirk Diggler?????

Honestly do you think he would have got many games.

We won the flag in 87. Finals in 88

We had far better rovers already at the club, Gleeson, Bradley, Naley, Murphy, Meldrum, Johnston, not sure that Russell would fit in as a 17 yo.

93-95 Bradley, Williams, Brown, Kouta, Ratten, Whitehead again no room

in 1987 he would have been 17 years old, so you are probably right he wouldn't have got a game and possibly struggled as an 18 year old in 1988. But in 1990 to 1992 when he was 20 - 22 he may have got a game ahead of possibly a Hawker, McKinnon, Fotia, White, Arceri, Sholl, Bond, Ben Roberston etc. It was around this time that Fraser Murphy, Shane Robertson were on their way out of the game. The players I mentioned I am sure at that point in time he would ahve got a game ahead of them.

He wasn't a champion by any means, but we could have used Scotty Russell's pace and dash in our '93 GF side...

I think we would've got a lot closer to the Bummers in that game if Russell and Chris Bond (another 'reject' from that period) had been playing for us instead of, say, Athorn and Powell. Premiership players Alvin and Gleeson were exposed as being on their last legs in that game too. But Parko tended to back the proven veterans over younger players we had at the time, such as Paul McCormack and a young Kouta...

My point exactly he would have been coming through at a time when we had a shortage of quick ball carriers - at that stage of his career he was ahead of Brown, Kouta and Ratts (not saying he was a better overall player, but just at that time).

The very fact that we're struggling to find anyone of real quality is brilliant...

The irony from my point of view is taht at times Carlton's desire to trade picks for has-beens has bitten us and this is a good example where we off-loaded 2 picks for Hawker and either of these could ahve secured Russell.

Was Russell an out-and-out champion - of course he wasnt, but in his time he was a very good player for the Pies, and wise drafting doesnt allow (or lessens the chance) of having a void in talent coming through like we did say between 89 - 92. Russell woudl ahev been close to the top of his game whilst Ratts, Brown, Kouta etc were still developing.

Would we have drafted him had those 2 picks still been available - who knows???? But Russell would have been known to Carlton from his days in our junior squad.

Just for balance in this thread, I'll mention:
Peter McLean
Val Perovic
Brad Pearce
Matty Hogg
Dean Rice
Matt Clape
Brighton Diggins
Harry Madden
Glen Manton.

There's probably others but, all the above were from opposition clubs, and all became Carlton premiership players.

Justin Madden went on to have a relatively successful stint with the Labor Party...
