Blues hand out Giant lesson

Giants coach Kevin Sheedy took the positive from his team's performance.

"We kicked more goals than we did last week against the Suns," he said.

His target for his team was eight goals but he was not too fussed about falling short. "We just told them, 'Take out of the game what you can. Then throw it in he bin and move on.' "

Has anyone reminded the old man that this game had four quarters of larger length than the two halves they played against the Suns

It was quite warm out there today and the were pretty tired by the end. In fact they took the foot off the pedal in the last qtr. I felt it was hard really to draw much from the day to be honest because they were poles apart. It seeemed to me that Carlton were testing a few set ups and to blow the cobwebs out of a few players.

Carlton are going to test most teams this year in the ruck and clearances from the centre. As much as Hampson frustrates when he get his hands on a big grab only to spill it at the critical point his ruck work was really outstanding. So was Warnock and perhaps to a lesser extent Casboult. The rucks and ball players seemed to have a good synergy and Murph and Judd were spoon fed and got lots of clearances. Warnock was good both in the ruck and when he played in the goal square where he took a couple of good marks and converted

We have some new players who will push for selection from Rnd 1. Here I am thinking of Laidler, Curnow and Duigan. Another who really impressed me was Collins. He will press for selection as a wing/forward type but there are a few I suspect in that bracket. He does read the game well and his delivery is very good. (In fact on the issue of foot skills there is a pronounced difference this year to last year.)

I am going to put my head out and make a bold statement. Chris Yarran is pure class, forward or back. He was unbelievably good for the half he played off the HB line. Seriously, he will pull lots of Brownlow votes off Judd, Murph and Bryce this year. When he reaches that critical point of believing in himself look out AFL. And Murph will get plenty of votes this year - he was really good today.

Another bloke that really impressed me was Watson. He will play plenty of games this year. His reading of the flow of the game is something to behold and his kicking is outstanding -accurate and penetrating. An exceptional talent.

I like Curnow as an in and under. He feeds to ball out well and has got an excellent motor. I think he will be one of the rookies to be first elevated.

Austin was good and he will benefit enormously from the run. He took some strong contested marks and his delivery was mostly good. He fluffed one kick I recall but would be forgiven. He also went to ground in a one on one when he was at FB which lead to a GWS goal = one that he will prefer to forget about He seemed to blow up a bit later in the day. He will be right up there when the team for Rnd 1 is selected.

Armfield played on a wing and he dominated. Armfield will be one of the first to get selected this year from what I saw.

Eddy was wiley and kicked an 6. He was a class above his opponent but I'm not sure much of a line can be drawn from it. Same witn Thornton who moved forward in the second half and bagged 5 or so. Actually I thought Thornton played well both back and forward.
but I have this nagging doubt that there may not be room for him for most of the year.

ANother who will play some games this year in Tuohy. He is a solid defender and looks good coming off half back to set up play.

Others who cuaght my eye were Kerr (whom I think will play a few this year) Casboult and Twomey. Joe Dare also got a few touches.

That about it. Others did good work as I would expect - Gibbs, Bower and Scotland but nothing that especially stands out in my mind now.

I can't be stuffed checking again for typos,

Thanks Stubbs, your summary is first rate. Unlike your political commentary which is third rate.

Not sure about what to take from belting a bunch of kids but a run is a run and it's good to see everyone got though unscathed.

From the cfc site...
Quote:
Carlton was missing Andrew Walker, Jordan Russell, Kade Simpson, Matt Kreuzer, Kane Lucas, Lachie Henderson, Jarrad Waite, Ryan Houlihan and Andrew Carrazzo from its best line-up.

Is Houla really in our best 22? Many outside the club seem to think so but most Carlton fans I know rarely speak of him anymore.

Next game: Adelaide at Visy Park next Friday

Turns out the kids in the crowd provided the toughest competition to win the ball today.

My only disappointment today was Shaun Hampson.

I noticed he seemed very unfit - huffing and puffing soo much he was almost blowing a G...

Oh..

um..

Go Carlton.. Great win.

(and accordingly, I'm now calling him Ham BAG) :)

Neither team will have gotten much out of today other than Carlton experimenting a little and the GWS boys getting to bask in Juddy's aura.

But seriously (and pardon me mispelling names - can't be bothered checking this late)

Was really, really impressed in hindsight - the team looks sooo much more balanced than I've seen for a long time - can't wait to see our first 22 run out but the selectors now have a much tougher job on their hands than I'd ever have imagined at the end of last season.

Watson looks terrific. Exactly what we needed up back and will develop beautifully. For any faults, Cobault looked pretty good I thought.

Collins seemed to get a bit of it, Dougan looked solid and did some nice work and most of the other rookies an d newbies who played showed plenty.

Great to see Thornton kick a bag so maybe he'll get a run earlier than we might have anticipated and Eddie was sublime - showing more confidence than last year.

Warnock looked ok up forward but our forward / ruck structure in our biggest challenge.

My thoughts - start out with Warnock rucking and Hammer up forward and probably Gartlett as substitute. Kruizer can switch with either Hammer or Warnock and Gartlett would probably sub for Hammer until he gets a bit more confidence although his attempt at a screamer today was Walker-esque!

Yarran - just full of confidence now - the three amigos will do awesome things this year, no doubt and will be envied.

Judd looked a little underdone - no suprise there but was still very Juddy

Armfield - loved being up forward obviously and I thought he looked terrific in the NAB cup games.

As I said - we looked alot more balanced than last year, even in a prakky match so bring on the season.

And how good was it having Carlton play in Canberra - just to check, can anyone remember them playing a game previous to this in Canberra after the mid 1970's?? (seriously!)

Photos later - it's been a long day!

Definitely is. Note our forward structure in the games he played vs the games he missed in 2010. We missed him terribly when he got injured.

Complete crap this playing GWS - a month before the season we would have been better playing intra club
Nothing out of this for the Blues and our hierarchy should send letter to AFL telling them to schedule a top 8 team against a team that is so woeful is deeming and undermines our preparation for the season proper

We got dudded with the draw here. We would have got more out of playing a game amongst ourselves than against GWS, they have a long, long way to go. I guess the only reason they are being included in the pre season is for a bit of publicity but they are way off the mark. Next weeks game will be a bit more genuine.

Guys we handed a team coached by Sheedy an absoulte spanking. That has to be good.

I remember teams saying that about us under Pagan in the regular season

Thought I'd add my brief match report as well - my first ever for TC.

Bombed down the motorway from Sydney, and got to the ground about 5 min into the first quarter after spending a while getting parking and then a bit of walk. It miust be interesting when the ground is full. Sat on the grassy area for the first half in the sun - it was nice to be at a "suburban" ground and watch the footy.

Missed the first GWS and Blues goal. From the remainder the obvious was apparent, the game was a mismatch. I'm not brilliant in picking up everything going on in a game so I won't be able to add much more to the other match reporters really. I did think Warnock looked ok, or maybe it was just that he is more noticeable than anyone else. He was moved to the forward line, like in last years final against the Swans , and was effective He can hold marks and is a nice kick. This compared with the Hammer who couldn't take a mark at all forward (as someone has said, has he got iron hands?), but his ruck play was ok.

Laidler did some ok things and a couple of errors, kicked a nice goal. Collins looked good from the little I can remember of him.

Got sick of sitting in the sun and moved down behind the goal we were kicking to in the third quarter This proved to be a wise move as the ball was there most of the time. This quarter was very much we get the ball out of the middle, down to the forward line, kick a goal, back to the middle and repeat again. Murphy was particularly noticeable in driving the ball from the centre. I can't remember GWS getting the ball into their half more than once. Some of the defenders got a "rest" in the forward line like Thornton, Laidler and Bower, but really they would have had nothing to do at the other end. Thornton did ok and Eddie Betts enjoyed homself, kicking goals from all angles. Casboult was pretty ineffective however.

The photo Camelboy took of the boys fighting over the football, happened just behind me.

Swapped ends again for the fourth quarter but the game had fizzled out by then. A few goals to us but pretty blah. I suspect we had rested Murphy by then and the drive from the centre had died out. GWS weren't able to do much with the ball either.

A disappointment at the end was the playing of the Club song - mostly so faint you could hardly hear it.

Good win but werent playing much...
At least the guys having their fist hit outs for the year came through unscathed...
Good for some of the younger kids confidence to put in good performances like they did...
Glad we're back at Princes Park next Friday for our our first serious hit out of the Pre Season (Im not couting those Micky Mouse NAB Cup games)...

That's what makes the match reports so interesting Royal Parade each reporter notices different things and often has a unique take. They're always appreciated.
Is it that hard for Hammer to learn to soften his hands? It's been a long time coming.
Hesitate to say this but sometimes you get the impression his concentration is a bit lackadaisickle. Yet one of the reasons he was preferred ahead of Renouf and Tippett was his boundless energy and enthusiasm IIRC.
It's big gig for him now Jacobs has gone and Cruise will be a while yet. He will get the ground time in the Seniors.
My 2 cents worth: keep your eye on the ball
