Goes without saying that we weren't playing much ... but gee Collins was impressive. Mitchell Carter in the time he got was a real livewire as well. Thornton showed what a legend he is by smashing 5 in against 17 year old kids. Professional to the end.

Thanks everyone for the updates. Very amusing reading.
Dont know what we got out of that game but it didnt seem like we got any injuries which is important. Next week against Adelaide should be a better hitout to see where we are at.

The last quarter was a real fizzer, and I think the timekeepers took mercy on GWS because it didn't seem to last very long.

The first 10 minutes was the only time there was anything approaching intensity and actually GWS looked alright then. We were very rusty early but after settling dominated the middle of the ground. Took us a while to add polish to our possession and we fluffed quite a few plays early on with poor skill or poor decision making.

We soon got into a nice flow and it really was men v boys. The stats may not back it up, but it seemed like we won every centre clearance with virtually no pressure from the 2nd quarter on.

Hard to single out any better players, because every one had a turn in the spotlight it seemed, haha. But Murphy was a clear standout early. Yarran displayed a couple of passages of sublime skills. Give him another year or two of AFL footy under his belt and he will be pure silk. Garlett was good and so too his other little helper in Betts, who probably tried hardest during all four quarters.

Warnock did okay in the 1st half, after being one of our slower starters, but sometimes he looks a bit lazy and I think he, and probably a few of his mates, underestimated the GWS kids early on.

Judd looked pretty good to me and was moving very freely. His goal on the run from 50m was Judd at his best. He's got such a great knack at hitting the ball in pack at the right time every time. Because of the close attention he gets he doesn't always get a clean take away, but it's certainly not due to poor positioning.

Our ball movement ended up being quite smooth and our decision making certainly improved as well. That said, it's probably not worth reading too much into today's game because it was little more than a gentle warm up. We did rotate a lot players through the F50, which might ignite a few later ideas for the coaching staff during the year, who knows. At least we know the best way to straighten T-bird up is to plonk him in front of goals, haha.

The crowd was 5991 in the end and I reckon that's not too bad. It would be great to see the boys in town again next year, but I won't hold my breath!

Sorry I stopped with the tweets, but I spent half the game looking at my phone, so figured I may as well enjoy some great play while there was no pressure on.

It was quite warm out there today and the were pretty tired by the end. In fact they took the foot off the pedal in the last qtr. I felt it was hard really to draw much from the day to be honest because they were poles apart. It seeemed to me that Carlton were testing a few set ups and to blow the cobwebs out of a few players.

Carlton are going to test most teams this year in the ruck and clearances from the centre. As much as Hampson frustrates when he get his hands on a big grab only to spill it at the critical point his ruck work was really outstanding. So was Warnock and perhaps to a lesser extent Casboult. The rucks and ball players seemed to have a good synergy and Murph and Judd were spoon fed and got lots of clearances. Warnock was good both in the ruck and when he played in the goal square where he took a couple of good marks and converted

We have some new players who will push for selection from Rnd 1. Here I am thinking of Laidler, Curnow and Duigan. Another who really impressed me was Collins. He will press for selection as a wing/forward type but there are a few I suspect in that bracket. He does read the game well and his delivery is very good. (In fact on the issue of foot skills there is a pronounced difference this year to last year.)

I am going to put my head out and make a bold statement. Chris Yarran is pure class, forward or back. He was unbelievably good for the half he played off the HB line. Seriously, he will pull lots of Brownlow votes off Judd, Murph and Bryce this year. When he reaches that critical point of believing in himself look out AFL. And Murph will get plenty of votes this year - he was really good today.

Another bloke that really impressed me was Watson. He will play plenty of games this year. His reading of the flow of the game is something to behold and his kicking is outstanding -accurate and penetrating. An exceptional talent.

I like Curnow as an in and under. He feeds to ball out well and has got an excellent motor. I think he will be one of the rookies to be first elevated.

Austin was good and he will benefit enormously from the run. He took some strong contested marks and his delivery was mostly good. He fluffed one kick I recall but would be forgiven. He also went to ground in a one on one when he was at FB which lead to a GWS goal = one that he will prefer to forget about He seemed to blow up a bit later in the day. He will be right up there when the team for Rnd 1 is selected.

Armfield played on a wing and he dominated. Armfield will be one of the first to get selected this year from what I saw.

Eddy was wiley and kicked an 6. He was a class above his opponent but I'm not sure much of a line can be drawn from it. Same witn Thornton who moved forward in the second half and bagged 5 or so. Actually I thought Thornton played well both back and forward.
but I have this nagging doubt that there may not be room for him for most of the year.

ANother who will play some games this year in Tuohy. He is a solid defender and looks good coming off half back to set up play.

Others who cuaght my eye were Kerr (whom I think will play a few this year) Casboult and Twomey. Joe Dare also got a few touches.

That about it. Others did good work as I would expect - Gibbs, Bower and Scotland but nothing that especially stands out in my mind now.

To be honest I am not sure as I wasn't especially looking out for him. If my memory serves me correctly he was a while in the halfbackline but a saw him a bit forward in the last qtr. Perhaps he spent time on the ball later. ( The reason he came to mind is that I had to look at my schedule during the game a couple of times to see who #37 was.)
