It's one of our favourite sayings here, and it's valid. We're portrayed regularly as pariahs, cheats, louts, and generally unpleasant. Often times our indiscretions mentioned anytime players from another club does something stupid, or when the issue of tanking or outside-salary-cap payments are brought up. There is no doubt we're hated, like Collingwood. The difference being they have supporters littered throughout the football media who deliberately use the 'us vs them' feeling in their writing to drum up more support for the filth and annoy the rest of us (Essendon* on the other hand aren't hated, because their writers only show their organisation as some sort of utopia and everyone gobbles it up). But we are genuinely hated, and these same people only pour kerosene on this. No jocular Collingwood-esque ribbing, they just @#$%&! hate us, and will happily sacrifice journalistic integrity and ethics if it means they can burn another CFC effigy for the frothing masses to eat up.

But I digress. What do the esteemed members of TC think are the things that (according to the ferals) only Carlton do?

1. We are the silver tails and have no affinity to the working class

This is crap, I grew up in Carlton in a working class family and most of mates lived in commsion housing or the high rise. We have the wealthy supporters like the Pratts, Elliotts, Smorgon family or the PM's like Menzies and Frasers etc and everyone thinks that our supporter base were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Anyone who grew up in Carlton 25 + years ago would know that it was not always the case. Look at our heartland from Brunswick, Coburg, Fawkner etc and the suburbs around them stretching to Jacana or Lalor / Thomastown. A lot of influential people who follwo Carlton have also attributted thsi to the fact that tehy attended Melb. Uni and resides in cheap squats in the Carlton district and if they had no such follwoing to any other VFL team somes started following the Navy Blue and stayed loval to the CFC. This is a massive miss-conception that gives me teh sh*ts to no end.

2. most of our supporters are of an ethnic origin.

Again another miss-conception, whilst proud taht we do have a strong ethnic supporter base its not as much as people think. A bit of history on teh suburb of Carlton and at the turn of last century Carlton was a dumping ground for newly arrived immigrants who had docked at Station Pier. The suburb had some of the worst slums around and the suburb used to have a large Chinese population. The next biggest influx was teh Jewish population that resided in Carlton especially in Carlton South. Post war migration we received an influx from Europe particularily Greeks and Italians. This has given a vast ethnic supporter base that has always had teh ability to closely assocaite with the Barassi's, Silvagni's, Kekovich's, Catoggio, Kouta etc. Yes we do have a large ethnic base but other clubs whether its their redneck element seem to dwell on this more than what they should.

So to translate for the intents of this thread

1) Only Carlton have 'dodgy rich guys'
2) Only Carlton have 'efniks'

About right?

As a socialist and Anglo I find it funny that people think we are 1. Sillver spooned and 2. Ethnic. When you think about it, it means that we are very inclusive. A very special group of people methinks.

Whenever we play 'Guess the club' in new social situations everyone seems to think I support the Filth. It comes quite a shock when they find out I am a Blueboy. The reactions are classic. And leads me to beleive that while Collingwood like to think they are the most hated club, we know we are.

1. I was born and bred two blocks from Princes Park. As a young kid I couldn't work out why there was this thunder on a sunny Saturday afternoon! And all these people walking up from / down to Lygon St. Couldn't work it out!

2. I am rather proud that we have replaced collonwood as the most hated club in the AFL. Now if we can only beat them on the field.

by the way, Bomba Sheldon is spot on with the history of Carlton in the early days, there is a great book you can buy called LYGON ST , which talks about all this and the iconic restaurants , people , play theatres etc that made Carlton what it is today .
