You should change your avatar to village idiot if you keep making statements like that based on a half of february football.

Something along these lines for Round1:

Armfield Jamison Watson
Russell Bower Laidler
Gibbs McLean Simpson
Houlihan Waite Robinson
Walker O'hAilpin Betts
Warnock Judd Murphy
Scotland Lucas Ellard

Sub/Emerg: Yarran Gartlett Duigan Hampson Joseph

Actually the original post (and the next) was on those players who'd shown good pre-season form (in the NAB Cup and the practice games), not those who are our best players and will be in our starting line up. But don't let actually reading a post get in a way of a rant. :garthp:

Given that it's Richmond, we don't need to overload with tall defenders. I know every game is won in the middle but this one will really be won in the middle. If we can win the clearances and get our running game going we should win comfortably.

Therefore;

Armfield Jamison Laidler
Yarran Bower Russell
Gibbs McLean Simpson
Houlihan Waite Garlett
Hampson Walker Betts
Warnock Judd Murphy

Int: Scotland, Lucas, Ellard,
Sub: Robinson

With Henderson absent, it's a good opportunity to give Hampson a genuine crack at a forward roll, as well as alternating ruck responsibilities with Warnock. IMO Yarran was excellent down back in the NAB game, and I'd have Robinson as a "impact" sub who can come in with some energy in the second half.

I don't think O'hAilpin has shown enough in the practice games & last 6 months of 2010. Ditto Joseph.

I thought Setanta's first half against Richmond was very good.

Admitedly, whilst he may make the perfect SUB because of the versatility he brings, I feel that we have improved as a team so much that I've gone a bit off the idea of him in our first 21. This especially so if Watson continues to show he belongs, and when Hendo is back with Kreuzer, then unless there's a CHB spot he stamps his name ie earns on form, not potential.

Setanta will get games in 2011, but not an automatic selection by any means.

Don't forget that name...I reckon it'll be as big as Podsiadly and Barlow by mid year.

I did consider him, but I thought that it's unlikely both he and Laidler would get games early on, and IMO Laidler could slot in as a 3rd tall, whereas Duigan has to fight others for a BP/HBF position.

Agree he looks promising though.

From the noises Ratts has been making, I wouldn't at all be surprised if they were both in the team.

We're not going to go into a game with only 1 ruckman.

How many ruck men do Richmond have?

P.S. I put in a disclaimer....

Int: Kruezer, Lucas, Armfield/Duigan, Carrazzo/Joseph

If Kreuzer or Hendo don't pull up then Hampson is in. If both miss, then maybe Setenta, or we play smaller, with both Duigan and Armfield, and one of Carrots/Joseph.

I agree with this one.
Although probably a little tall down back. Maybe Armfield/Carrazzo in for Watson depending on match ups. Forward line and midfield = perfect

Sorry, Scotland really needs/deserves a spot in there too (not sure where, maybe he has to be given his shot ahead of Laidler/Watson)
Damm, hate to be match committee......
Houlihan (and a few others) under pressure every single game.
Can now see how tough it was for people like Gamble and Laidler etc at Geelong. You really can be deserving, but who goes?

If nothing else, this tread demonstrates that finally, after years of development, we've got some genuine depth of tallent at the Club...

Is CHB the best position for Bower? Most people seem to have him there and at this stage I agree but by the end of the year I would like to see Watson fill that role.

The thing about Bower is that he can play as a running half back/back pocket as well as a KPP. He seems to do well when he starts the run out of defence and helps build it rather than being the guy to finish the play.

I think this thread demostrates it is February and nothing else

we have some quality there is no doubt about it but the reason it is so hard to pick a team is because there is not enough quality yet

i think we all agree that Watson shows plenty of promise, and is a big unit, but he's not ready for a full season of AFL. he'll get games this year, but he'll spend most of it with the Bullants. Not that there's anything wrong with that. He'll be a gun, but not yet.

Just on another note, did any other AFL members out there manage to get tickets booked for any games this morning??

Basically got my seats booked till about round 9 I think. Rich,Coll,Ess,Saints games all booked.
All centre wing on level 2A at the G or Level 1 at Etihad.

Now to organise Gabba rd2 and Syd rd6 and I will be a happy man!!!!

My thinking? I don't believe Kreuzer, Carrazzo, Houlihan or McLean will be right for round 1. I've selected the sub with the idea of a midfield utility in mind.

i really like the look of laidler

and i am guessing he was promised a chance - as in game time

otherwise why would he leave the cats - apart from the obvious reason of coming to the great dark navy blues
