I would always look at the character of the player and family.

Murphy comes from a good football family. He's smarter and has more character than to chase some dirty lucre. His reputation and that of his father mean too much to him.
But if they were offering $1-1.2mil/year, he'd be crazy not to go.
With their sights set on Swan/Pendlebury/Bartel/Scully, they couldn't offer Murphy stupid money also.
They'll land Scully for $750-800k/year and Pendlebury/Swan for $1mil plus.
Then they'll get a few peripheral Campbell Brown/Brennan/Bock types

So possibly Scully and one of Pendlebury or Swan saved Murph from a really tough decision?

I think buzz is right, in that the big bucks have probably already been allocated somewhere else, and Murph's offer would've been merely in the "bloody good" bracket, rather than the "too good to refuse" bracket. I think the new contract numbers being talked about in that article suggest there was no insanely inflated offer from GWS. Thank the football Gods.

Hopefully, pen gets put to paper soon.

Agree 100% with that analysis. Which, if I were a fan of the teams with other players linked would have me feeling even more nervous. GWS would have SERIOUS $$$ allocated elsewhere if they aren't in 'too good to refuse' territory with Murph. Further, I would imagine they'd have a home for those $$$ confirmed.

I bet Eddie McGuire is wishing he'd shut up last week as it now looks more likely one of his players will be their big-name signing.

I commented on Hutchy and his "sources" but it obviously it wasn't deemed to be anti-Carlton enough for the little paper.

Yes, nice to know he wants to stay - and nicer when he's actually signed. :)

So Robbo was just on SEN and added a little caveat to the story.

He mumbled (almost under his breath) that he wasn't sure if Murphy's management felt they were as close to a deal as Carlton management evidently believe. So it may be a little more drawn out than the headline suggests. that said, there was absolutely no suggestion that it won't happen.

Whatever Fat Robbo reckons - probably trying to string out the drama - at least we have Murph on record saying he wants to stay and the club and his people are talking.

Actually Robbo isn't too bad with Carlton. I think he has a minor soft spot for them. He did, however, have that major brain fade last year picking Essendon* to finish in the eight because 'I just think they're a better team than Carlton'
