When do AFL Members with Club Support get counted?

Pretty sure they get counted right away - I had to go to AFL House to pay for my AFL membership on Friday - and before any one asks why I left it to the last minute it was because I had to provide evidence in writing that I was a currently enrolled high school student to get the concession membership and our school office didnt reopen till Thursday.

Anyway whilst I was there - looked inside to the admin room to the left of the counter and there was a Collingwood members Tally board showing over 50,000  (but like Sydney Blue said - I bet most of those are 3 game memberships, even Collingwood supporters would prefer to spend their money on their weekly supply of 1 x Carton of Horizon 50s, and 1 x Carton of Victoria Bitter rather than taking out an 18 game membership.

Its funny to read about why Pies supporters have 3 game memberships, but if there is a niche for it then its clever marketing. It may be something that Carlton has to look at in future to increase membership, its better off having 5,000 - 10,000 of these affiliate membership revenues that not!!!!

No whinging here, sorry. Just asking why we're lagging behind clubs that we're told don't have the supporter base that we do (we're behind St Kilda FFS), and being smashed by those that we're supposedly on par with.

Right now we're only doing better than the three minnows in this state. Forgive me for questioning whether things really are hunky dory.

If we break our record, but still lag behind as we are now, will you consider that maybe we could be doing better?

Tonights newsletter from the club has the number at 26,794. How does this compare to last year?

Who cares if we break our record ? It's all relative. Melbourne are targeting 40,000 members this year and breathing down our necks. Melbourne FFS!! A club that was pretty much dead in the water 3 years ago.

Tells you how much difference a well run administration can make. The club needs to wake up to themselves, the "she'll be right" attitude wouldn't cut it as our competitors will - and already are - go flying past us on and off the field.

Just to clarify.... where were we 5 years ago? dead in the water?
I don't think there is a she'll be right attitude either. I think we are much better organised than in the past. I.e. Intra-club match much better organised, fan comms improving (see recent 1981/1982 painting email), and embracing of twitter and facebook.

DS. - I think it just needs some more time. Get on a roll at the start of the year, stay out of off feild drama, and the membership will grow substancially. Though if we don't crack 50,000 members I will be disappointed.

We have the support base, but we need to start getting into the finals on a consistent basis and winning some finals games.

Considering we're competing for members in the Melbourne market with the other Melbourne-based clubs...
Here's how our current membership tally compares..

1. Coll'wood – 50,042
2. Hawthorn – 35,056 (+6530 Tassie members)
3. Essendon* - 34,2817
4. St Kilda - 27,242
5. Richmond - 27,141
6. Carlton – 25,017
7. Melbourne – 22,910
8. Western Bulldogs - 20,827
9. Nth Melb - 15,621

We're coming 6th out of 9! I thought we had one of the largest supporter bases?! Why aren't more supporter jumping on board? Especially when our on field future looks very bright?!

They need to forget membershio Tallys and table the membership dollars - so many clubs are offering 1, 2 , 3 games membership now you wouldn't know whats whats when if came to who was leading and who was coming last

Very salient point.

I think that the numbers prepared to jump on board as members does say heaps about our so called 'huge ' supporter base.

The dollar value is another equation.

As a sponsor, I look at the volume of members prepared to commit to their club than the $ they put into the club...give you the tip.

I must also add that the figures of attendees at games does suggest we do have a lot of supporters but not the half million we supposedly had nationally in 1995.....that was along time ago...Swans hadn't won a flag, Freo didn't exist, neither did Port or even the concept of a GC team...and they were all big Carlton supporter territories back then.

I can't believe the Hawks have 6000 Tassie supporters...WTF? How did they pass us?
The answer is obvious imo...we have fallen away since those days.

If your on-ground performance falls away so does membership, off-field incidents dont help.

I think not going to the MCG hurt us, I loved Princes Park but the MCG was where we should have went in the late 90's rather than building a white elephant in 1996 then locking into a 10 year deal at Etihad stadium in 2004 or thereabouts.

A bit more aggressive marketing by our club may help as well.

We haven't won a final for a decade, Hawks, Pies, Cats and Saints have been playing off in prelims and grand finals for the last few years. Do you think Manchester United would be the powerhouse they are today if they hadn't won a title for 15 years and finished middle or bottom of the table for the last 10?

I wonder how many of those tallies are artificially boosted by non-season ticket members

Dont take any notice of Richmonds total. Last year we were upset at being behind Richmond only to find out that they include non match access memberships in their totals. The AFL do not include these types of memberships as official numbers so their numbers will probably come down later.

At the end of the day its not how many members we have but how much money we generate from the memberships we get .We have plenty of support in Melbourne
and once we become a powerhouse again they will be back in droves.
