Jefrey Garlett snuck his head into the doco when they showed Yarran in teh Swan Districts room on draft day.

Thank goodness he got rid of the 'tache - looks a lot better clean shaven.

Fabulous show and demonstrates how difficult it is for the indigenous boys to succeed.

Kudos to Chris for even getting drafted  and hopefully will be a spur for him to go to greater heights in the next few years

Whose heart skipped a beat when at the end he ran out for the blues to the strains of lily of laguna

How about the tears in his grandfathers eyes when he saw him playing and he kicked the goal

How about the young Jeffy in his entourage on draft day when chris got drafted - would have presumably been hard for Jeffy not to be drafted but a couple of weeks later was over after being taken in the rookie draft

Get a copy of this it is quality television

That was at the Gold coast - disgusting game with another Fev attention grabbing stunt

Interesting all 3 boys had parents seperated

the boy in sydney was going ok until his oldman turned up then dissappeared again and you could see he was disappointed with himself

The guy in Tassie thought his old man could have been a bit tougher with him but for some reason left him to his own devices and the lid was to laid back didn't have it in him - He needed to be pushed not coaxed

Yazz's mum and Pop obviously a big influence and maybe being in WA a few other brothers there spurring each other on

Not available in the Middle Kingdom or anywhere else other than Australia. I hope we have some friends out there who can help us tragics overseas.

Re Jago in Tassie, his dad was probably a bit conscious of not being too pushy and being a controlling father. I supppose there is a fine line between coaxing and being pushy. It wouldnt be a great predicament to be in. At the end of teh day, Jago made the decision to drop down from Smithton back to his local club Irishtown. That in itself shows that the fire in the belly was possibly never there. He was probably to use to being a big fish in a small pond.

Kevin Sheehan did say earlier in the piece that him being in an isolated part of the state would make it hard for him as he wasnt always playing and training with the best available or had acces sto the best resources. Nonetheless, he did play for his state in two carnivals which was a great effort.

There was a comment about no AFL footballer coming from Smithton, a schoolmate of mine older brother came from there, it was Nth Melb's Ben Buckley who is now involved with Soccer in this country.

my feel about Jago and his father/grandfather was that they were so negative and condescending. We never really saw the father giving his son that warmth that Yarrans mum had for Chris.

Jago's father was by far the worst character of the doco.

A bit harsh I reckon Swan. The only reason you knew anything about Jago's father was because he was not in jail or a drug addict about to commit suicide. Jago's mum was so warm she let the father raise the kids!! My take on his attitude and he expressed in the documentary was that Jago had to find it within himself to make the necessary adjustments in his life. He just was not prepared to do it.

i thought jago's parents were negative in there approach and allowed him to do what he wanted at a young age. i thought the boys that didnt make were scared to get outta there comfort zone which resulted in them not goin anywhere but i cant imagine there upbringing since mine was nothing like it.
yarra was all class, loved his grandfather and only time i got emo was when they were at the airport when he was leaving
great doco and if u have not seen it , get it

Scott Knights also came from Smithton and played for Collingwood.

Loved seeing how proud his mum and grandpa were when he played his first game

Think Chris deserves kudos for making it to AFL level, the other boys stories showed just how easy it is NOT to make it through.

Also forgot Daniel McAllister who played at Essendon*. The effort required for kids (and their parents) in isolated parts of Tasmania to make it to the highest level is such a difficult and challenging task. There have been so many examples of amazingly talented footballers that as Bomba Sheldon said, enjoyed being a big fish in a small pond. These little pockets are very comfortable for these talented players who can be brilliant with little effort in local leagues and lauded by their communities. It is hard for them to leave that. I was involved in youth development in Tasmania for a long time and so many players chose to stay and live the life rather than take the risk to go to the next level. Without the fire in the belly it won't happen. Not everyone is suited to such the high degree of focus required. Hopefully I get to watch the doco soon.

I thought it was an excellent documentary and not just because Yazz was in it. I really felt for the NSW kid. He seemed like a really good kid with a great Mum who had some bad things happen, particularly his dad's death just as they were establishing a rapport. Hope things go well for him. For both he and Jago, if they could get back into footy and get as far as their talent will take them (almost certainly not AFL at this stage) the discipline, team environment and developing a strong talent would do them the world of good.

I have no probs at all with Yazz at #6. How far he goes is uncertain but he sure is a Rolls Royce and seems a decent kid. Never underestimate how lucky you are if you have never had really bad things happen to you when you were growing up. Some of us are lucky and some aren't. Unfortunately compassion seems an old fashioned conceit to many these days. Jago seems a knock about kid who just likes playing and mucking around with his mates, good luck to him for that. Becoming an AFL footballer is not a compulsory career path. And he was probably a man in a kids body at 15 and hasn't developed. The NSW kid Daen Limos(?) just needs a hand to set him right as he seemed a really decent kid with some troubles not of his own making.

Also. although he played for Essendon*, Long spoke really well (as did Cathy Freeman). And kudos to Clontarf. It's great to have a school like that.
