I'd be surprised if any Blues supporters with a weak heart didnt cark it during that 3 week spell in Rounds 1-3 1993 when we had that 6 pt lost to Fitzroy followed up with the drawn 'out of bounds after the siren' game againts the Bummers, and then a win by less then a goal against the Hawks with a goal by Sticks in the dieing seconds.

Great reply from the Great man after his was criticised fro the kick after the siren against the Dons

The most accurate 'mongrel punt' kick for goal ever - a beautiful kick in teh first half of his career, but about halfway through after groin problems he developed teh 'perfect' floating mongrel kick for goals

I was at all three of those games, and recall them very vividly.

The win against Hawthorn is one of my favourite football memories, given the circumstances of the previous week. More than being happy/relieved we'd won, I was just so rapt for Sticks that day....

Knew from that day he'd be good.

Was it 2 or 3 Out of Bounds on the full that game? There were afew - I remember thinking this McKay player just couldn't kick.

I remember thinking exactly the same thing! He kicked at least 2 out on the full in that game I reckon. From memory he made a habit of it too, early in his career. It didn't take him long to settle down though because by the end of his 1st season ('93) he was considered one of the best first year players in the comp. And the rest, as they say, is history... :smoking:

Ashley Mathews had a great debut game against Hawthorn at Waverley. Also thought Mark Majerczak had the "Carlton Swagger" to make it.

Alan Thorpe, watched him dominate in a 1995 Ansett Cup game and never played a game...
I've wondered why he never got a crack at senior level.

I could probably mention at least a couple of hundred players that didnt fullfill there true potential for us.Probably a thousand really.I have been a dedicated magoo's fan all my life and have always had a massive interest on who we had coming through the ranks..............so i wont go on about any Carlton players coz i would be typin' for a week..............................as you all know,im from down Frankganastan way and the bloke that was a complete superstar in the local comp down here was the legendary Simon "The Goose" Goosey. This bloke kicked over a ton for about fifteen consecutive years. Many an ex AFL player would come down here in the comp and manup on Goosey only to be taken to the cleaners. He was an absolute freak of a footballer. Not overly tall or even athletic in build,in fact if you seen him walking down the street you would reckon he was a piano teacher.Boy,looks are decieving.Remember him playing in the legends match at Telsra and being manned up by Guy McKenna who incidendly had just retired from the AFL.Goosey kicked a lazy 4 on McKenna and dished a couple off.He ran rings around McKenna....................mind you,Goosey's timing was terrible. He first went to Richmond. He had Michael Roach,Brian Taylor, and Mark Jackson to contend with.Because Goosey was smaller than the other three, despite kicking bagfulls, was overlooked.Goosey realized his chances were limited at the Tiges so moved down the highway to the Cats.Bloody hell, how stiff can you be ? he ran into an emerging Gary Ablett senior and had to play second fiddle once again. So Goosey is running riot in the magoos just biding his time.Eventually he gets his chance.Guess what ? he does his block and clocks a hard tag and is suspended .So Goosey reckons its not meant to be and takes up a CC job at Mornington FC and turns what had been prennial cellar dwellars into a powerhouse of the competition.

PS.he is now coaching Frankston in the VFL.It will be interesting to see if his ability to coach at local level follows him in his VFL stink.

I love him on the Footy Show. He has a very funny thing going with Ronnie Burns.

The fact that he was cut from Footscray's, Fitzroy's and Swans list might tell you something?? Also being at the club duirng its best ecer year wasnt the greatest timing!!

just another note on Peter Kenny.....he is the only player in CFC history to line up in 4 consecutive Reserve Grade Grand Finals....'84, '85, '86, '87 (86 and 87 were of course back to back wins)

Good stat - i had a quick look at the Blueseum site and Mark Williams and DArren Ogier played in 84, 86 & 87 GF's. The 1985 GF team is not listed just the best players and goalkickers in which those two weren't listed.

I remember that Shane Robertson and Warren McKenzie both played in 3 losing GF's - 84 & 85 Reserves and 86 Seniors. So it was 4th time lucky for these two in 1987.

Ezra and Rotten Ronnie were frequently on the prowl in G-Town.

Ezra played against my boys this year - If I hadnt know better you would have sworn he had never seen a footy before by his performance.

Busted his ankle at start of 84 and I think it was and never recovered fully from it - then we had players like Dean, SOS etc come to the club in 84 and 85 then 86 we had the huge influx from interstate

Stiff in one way, but if Southby had not been injured in 81 and 82 he would never had played in a flag, so he did alright

PS- also played in 83 night flag

They wre back in the days when a lot of our premiership players from the late 70s and early 80s were still running around for us in the 2nds....

I think Carlton is going to be stiff that Warren McKenzie didnt end up playing another 33 games, Warren's son who is about 14 is an absolute gun and unfortunately does not qualify under the current father/son rule.
