We have to be tougher, says Carlton coach Brett Ratten

Quote:
CARLTON has embarked on a ruthless pre-season campaign aimed at making the players tougher mentally and physically.

Perceived as soft in some parts of the game, including defensive running, the Blues have demanded a more competitive pre-season from a group coach Brett Ratten believes is maturing into a harder-edged unit.

The result is the birth of a simple philosophy: Toughen up or you won't get a game.

"If you listed three things we had to do better as a team, one would be defensively, one would be mentally become stronger, and one would be how much communication we can improve," Ratten said yesterday.

"There's no doubt (we have to get harder) and that's been put into the programs.

the Blues have been soft since 2002....

when the dorks play us, they know, go in hard for the ball and we will turn into jelly. Its no coincidence that teams we have struggled against in the past 10 years are harden teams.

Part of that was that we were so crap, too many players were playing for themselves

The last few years when we have been competitive it has been dispapointing, the Dawks love rattling our cages and teh Collingwood game this year was bloody embarrassing. The score flattered us in the end.

Yes we need to get tougher, but we also need to get smarter. On-field & off-field.

Was it 2007 when we won a few early games and then got pole axed by Geelong by 90 points.

I don't think I've seen Carlton players squib it as much as i did that day.

Tougher and smarter. I like that. And also more coherent messages from the senior coach. Some of the quotes in that article from Ratten were horrendously conveyed.

I'd pay to see Rambo Stallone address the players and give a press conference.

Hopefully if the boys are harder this year then we can avoid embarrassing losses like the round 3 game against Essendon* and the round 12 game against North Melbourne in 2010.

A mate of mine ran into Walks at the tennis and he was saying this is the hardest pre season they have done easy...

Also said he is happy he stayed a blue when asked. When told it would be great to see him get more of a run this season he said thats all he wanted...

Not many if any. Can't afford to have sides own us or be dominating us year in year out over the next few seasons. Its funny how some sides though weaker on paper can have it over another club and win far more often than not when they play. Bombers and Pies comes to mind. Need to own them both for a few seasons.

Bryce was on SEN this morning and when quizzed by that tool Andy Maher about what exactly Ratts meant by this comment, his answer was along the lines of "Yeah it's a tough question to answer", before mumbling some stuff about coming back when the chips are down etc.

Seemed very vague to me :sly:

Agenda much??

If we are now judging senior coaches by the quotes that the Herald Sun chooses to print, we are in for a long year.

How do you rate our senior coach's ability to adequately verbalize his message to the media Buzz?
