Here is a nice article in today's Herald Sun.
No mention of the Booze cruise either.

I don't think he can do much more in the middle.
The improvement will come from kicking more goals, 25-30 would be nice.

THE death of the hard tag will help ensure dual Brownlow medallist Chris Judd reaches new levels this season, according to Carlton assistant coach Alan Richardson.

Richardson said that with the soundness of Judd's body, an improving midfield and the health of support act Brock McLean, the Carlton skipper would be an even scarier proposition for opponents.

Sorry, not convinced. We hear this every year and every year Juddy has to do the work of at least 3 people. I'll believe it when I see it.

Juddy looking a little thinner this year?

Does not seem the same shape in his shoulders and upper arms.

I like how Richardson mentions that tagging compromises team defense (collingwood rarely tagged last year). I can see a lot more teams if not all teams adopting the team defense this year.

There is not going to be a lot of room on a football field in 2011 and i can see games turning into big big scrums like the real grandfinal in 2010. Strength in close is going to be a key factor and i reckon Judd in close will be more value to the blues than trying to turn him back into the fleet footed outside mid he was back in 2006 when there was more space.

Great tactic, but if that makes the game ugly (and it does imo) then the AFL may revert to a VFA style 16 vs 16 players on the field.
You know how the AFL love to change rules every year.

Kind of agree with this.

Sounds as though the emphasis is well and truly on team disciplines.

we could do with Judd kicking some more goals. I would like to see 25 out of him this season.

If Judd wins a brownlow this year then we have failed as a team.

..the man's a machine, he'll always do the work of more than one man.. ..that's what makes him so dangerous, it's like having extra players out on the field.. ..though i agree, the 'has to' part is a let down..reckon he'll always do a mountain of work, just hoping it's more bonus than neccessity from now on..

If he's on $1M pa (and I think it's around that mark), he's paid 5 x $200K salaries pa. Based on that he should be doing the work of 5 $200K players.

Maybe the club has whispered to him that they expect him to do the work of 5 players in 2011, not 3, and because he can and is paid to do that he just might.

I think Richardson explained perfectly why there should be improvement from Juddy this year. He's at the peak of his powers and we have a great midfield maturing around him...and it runs deep.

When you stack a mid field deep enough, Judd and Abblet types flourish in their abilities to perform. Special K needs to get back to give him a chop out. He laid his body in the way to protect Judd and other mids before. Need Warnock and Hammer to do the same. Heck, I'd like to see Hammer take the ball under his wing like Kouta did in the past and dash for the forward 50m himself. He is the fastest guy we have over a sprint.

Judd will do better because Murphy isn't burnt out with an exhausting preseason, Gibbs will step it up, and we have so many players to rotate through the middle of the ground. I'd even include Waite in there drifting across the wings, with Hoops on the other wing. All will depend on Rich and Brown and how they fine tune the mental state of the players. Their attitudes. Have big expectations on a new improved side concetrating on the one percenters this season. The hard work with 2nd and 3rd efforst by all. That will automatically leave less work for Judd.

Wonder how quickly McLean will be moving after a reduced pre-season?

Maybe he was a lot slower last year due to injured ankle and the knee and hip issues created by ITBFS. ITBFS brought on by going to hard to soon after an injury lay off in 2009.
Perhaps this year holding him back and easing him into things will see him moving more freely during the season.
Let hope so !

now let's not kid ourselves (or others) - Brock's as slow as a wet week

our new coaches will just have to use him in a way that limits the oppositions ability to expose his pace deficiency

Sometimes the truth hurts.

Thanks for calling a spade a spade Rexy. I agree.

Lets just hope that holding him back from over doing it at training helps him move more freely during the season.

My uneducated guess is that holding him back is only giving his injuries a better chance of healing. That's a good thing. Using him and those around him properly in games is the key to his level of productivity.

No reason why he can`t achieve for us what Ball has for Collingwood.
