He has a contract. Outside that, he owes the club nothing other than to train and play his best every week until it runs out.
They pay him according to it and he plays footy in return.

We look at CFC through different eyes to the players. To them it's a job. It's a great job, one they love doing, but it's still a job. They are placed under a bit of pressure to stay by their mateship and teamsmanship.

Most of us have had jobs. Some of us even liked them. Some of us worked in a team oriented environment under duress.

Most of us would have left for another job with the same job description if the new company offered us triple our wages.

It's not the same as a supporter changing allegiance to a club just because the club is in hard times. That's just NOT on!
Let's not confuse blind loyalty and support for Carlton Footy Club with turning up to work, which is what the emotive among us are doing IMO.

Some players, many I would guess, adopt the club they play for as their club for life. So it can go beyond being just a job.

I hope it's settled one way or the other before too long. If for no other reason than to get rid of this thread.

If it's settled quickly, he's staying.

If we don't find out until the end of the year, he's going. If he's gone, we won't know until year's end. That's the problem with the poaching thing - the AFL culture just isn't set up for it.

John is right. If MM is not signed up by mid year, then he's as good as gone. Not completely, as Pavlich shoed, but chances are he would be off to GWS.

MM is probably on about $40k-$500k already at CFC, which is an obsene amount of money, so if he leaves CFC it will be disappointing

He is paid very well and Carlton have developed him from a 18 year old so he does owe Carlton his best football years which are 24-27. If wants to chase the dollar to finish his career then good luck to him. Ablett is different because he has achieved so much with Geelong wheres Marc Murphy has achieved nothing at Carlton to date.

..you're kiddin' right..?.. ..after judd and murphy, the midfield drops down a peg or two..by far our 2nd best midfielder, which is nothing to sneeze at when considering our number one..

Football nowadays is nothing more than a business: the AFL runs it as a business, the clubs are businesses trying to sell a product to get investors, and players sign contracts and operate under collective agreements just like any other employee in the land.

Would love MM to stay and think he will (just a feeling - understand that MM wants to stay, but his dad is driving a hard bargain), but really don't think players owe a club anything.

A club will not pick players who they think have no value, likewise players get delisted when they reach their use by date, even players who are good blokes (Fisher, Wiggins). A club's only interest in a player is the success / reward that player can bring. So why should players look at clubs like a loving parent figure who they honour no matter what? And how do supporters look at players? Pretty much like clubs, ie. the interest in a player is based on the success that player can bring. After they finish from football, we stop singing their praises and show no interest

If you were in MM's position, and GWS was offering you money that would set you up for life, what would u do?

Stick around for 3 more years and be one of the first to qualify for the muted free agency coming. If he continues to improve and become the player i think he will, he'll have all the Victorian clubs follating him.

With a bit of luck he may have a premiership or two by then. That's not going to happen in the abyss of Western Sydney.

You are right, AFL is a business however you would think that the players want a premiership or two, as well as the $$ for busting their chops.

Three successive Top 3 finishes in Carlton's Best & Fairest is a pretty impressive effort...

Especially considering his slow start to the season, it was a super effort to finish in top 3 of the B&F

One thing for certain, we can't afford to place 3 or so years developing young future guns to have them walk away with a new start at another club (Marc Murphy). Then smashing us when we play them. Need to sign players up and keep the good eggs, while trading or delisting the list cloggers. Murphy is genuine in his talents and proves to be more than valuable. I myself think we owe him something as he had a single handed job with Gibbs in the middle in our dark times. Was basically thrown in the deep end and told to swim. Judd has come along and taken the tagger off Murphy which helps his cause. Simo and Carrots will eventually be on the older side of their peak eventually and the newbies will still be finding their feet in the next 2 to 4 seasons. Its time to let Murphy and Gibbs blitz and get great assists from Garlett, Joseph, Yarran and others the Cachia types come through slowly. Need a heavily stacked mid field, which we have. If we lose these types we will be rebuilding a mid field all over again, and Judd will be an old man before they can help him dominate.

More gone than the gone in Gone in 60 Seconds. Even goner than the gone in Gone With the Wind. If you've gone fishing or bananas recently you still didn't go as gone as Murphy. Cause he's goner than the pubic covering of a Brazilian supermodel with alopecia.

OMGWTFBBQ? Didn't Ablett join the leadership group down at Geelong last year. Murph is definitely gone then and this is a last desperate hope to bribe him into staying around. The sky is falling.
