We all recognise the endless mistakes we made, the over the top and agenda filled recriminations from the AFL and all pain from the last decade but we have to move on.

Pretty ordinary of Wilson to feed the Hun and dredge it all up again. :garthp:

Almost as embarrassing as the Marcus Rose article from a few years back...

Same.

Goddard can GAGF.

Good player, but overrated. He stands out because he's not a passenger in a team of them.

Sorry KK, can't agree with this.

He and Lenny almost won a flag by themselves against a very very powerful side.

He's a brilliant player who's only just figured out how good he is.

I don't see a problem with what he has said. It's past history and it may well have been the situation.

If someone believes differently to Simon they can give their version of events.

What he says is the truth.

But a QC should be smart enough to know that if he feeds the Herald Sun stuff about our salary cap cheating, there's going to be a back page story on... gee, Carlton's salary cap cheating.

Which is something the club definitely doesn't need. Pretty dumb from Wilson IMO.

Poor judgment by Simon Wilson here. He should never have aired his views - not to the Herald-Sun and certainly not to Michael Warner. Now the media outlets around town are using the words - 'Revelation' and 'Revealed' as if it were a fait accompli that had we challenged the AFL Commission, the priority pick would automatically be ours.

That's not the case and more importantly, the club had to guarantee its future and were very much at the behest of the AFL, who have since done things for the Carlton Football Club that no other sporting governing body in the world would have dared. It would have been very easy for Wayne Jackson and Andrew Demetriou to recommend to the Commission that we, in the words of Bruce Mathieson - 'lock the place up and hand in the the keys'...because people shouldn't forget that that was one of the options on the table...thankfully - members never had to part with $50 bucks to wind the club up.

FWIW - Goddard might have taken a few years to produce the goods 'expected' of a number 1 draft pick - but he is now one of the genuine stars of the game. In 2003, Leigh Matthews was praising Brisbane captain Michael Voss in a presser and was asked: 'If you could clone a footballer, is Voss as close as you could get to the perfect model?'

'No, you'd clone Anthony Koutoufides,' Matthews said. 'He's the most talented player at his best I've seen, at his best. He has ups and downs, we know. But if he's on, he's 6.4, he wins stoppages, so if you're going to clone somebody, I reckon 22 Koutas would be a pretty tough team to beat.'

Ask the same question today, and I'm convinced the answer would be Brendon Goddard.

Good post.

I just don't see "champion" in Goddard.

He's very good. Very, very good. And yes, he's taken a few years to have found his niche.

Add to that he always busts a gut trying, which adds to his skills.

But "champion", and "great"? Not for mine.

Geez El we usually agree but Goddard whilst taking time to come on is pretty close to being a star.
If we had him in our team the young blokes would walk two feet taller.
He is the rightfull owner of the Norm Smith not Lenny Hayes from the drawn grand final.
St Bluda should strip cry baby of the captaincy and give it to Goddard if they are to be any hope of ever winning anything with their current list.

He's a champion player already, and if he keeps up current form for a few years will be a great.

Any coach in the league would have him in their first 18 picked I'd reckon.

On Wilson. Very little media savvy from a reputably clever bloke.

Pretty close to being a star. Yes, that's a fair way to put it. Pretty close. Not a star yet, though.

Agree about giving him the captaincy if they want to go the next step, given, as I've said, he leaves nothing in the tank at the end of the match. That's something not nearly enough players have as a characteristic, IMO.

I reckon Goddard is currently top 3 in the comp. Possibly the best, on recent form (with the possible exception of the Brownlow medallist...).
His GF, particularly the drawn one, reminded me of Kouta's '99 prelim - he took gaol saving mark in the backline, seemed to get it in midfield and then popped up with a speccy in the goalsquare.
if he continues in that vein next season, he will be no.1 (and Mike Sheehan's new love child).

Would be great to have him but there's no point looking back b/c if he was selected by us, all the other parameters change - we may not have finished quite so low, may not have murph, gibbs, Kruez, Judd etc...

At their best, Riewoldt with an uninterrupted season is arguably more valuable than Goddard. In the GF, Roo took a big mark in their backline against three Pies and got it forward to ultimately produce the point that levelled the score. Riewoldt preliminary final against the Dogs in 2009 was a pearler like Kouta's game in 1999.

How soon people forget!

Yet Goddard will go past Riewoldt and take over the captaincy in time.

You have to like Goddard who gave a classier speech than Maxwell.

Maxwell spat the dummy and had a sook that they had to come back again next week.

Not sure what more Goddard can do to be considered great other than continuity of form. Was arguably best on ground in the first granny, and he certainly imposed himself at a crucial moment on the biggest stage as great players do; that huge mark and goal late in the 4th was great by anyones standards.

Yes Goddard is a huge loss.......but if he was on our list I doubt we would have bottomed out enough to get Gibbs in 2006 and Judd/Kreuzer in 2007.

Free agency has been put in place from the end of 2012 to get Goddard home.

Saints, will be on the way down, we will be on the way up.

Goddard will return.
