I remember Fred Stafford winning us the '47 Grand Final on the siren wearing No 10.

It had a proud history in days of old.

A high number that has done well over the past 20 years is 44:

Justin Madden 300 + games
Andrew Carazzo 100 + games

So McLean went from 7 to 14 to honour his family connection.

Can Blueseum list other players that have changed from a low number to a higher one? I imagine it would be a short list!

You asked....

Bert Deacon was one...

It used to be relatively commonplace to change guernsey numbers.

If you look at players in the last 40 years, we could only find 5 more examples:

Doull
Walsh
Whitnall senior
Peter Bedford
Eris Pascoe

The Club has picked up thie Blueseum article around McLean joining the very small group of players who've moved guernsey numbers UP (plus some background on his move to guernsey #14).

The move from #4 to #11 by Doull is an interesting one. I checked with Patzfitrick, the Blueseum's main writer, and a few old guys I know, and the concensus seems to be that Doull didn't like being in the locker room next to #1 / #2 with all of the adulation for Nicholls etc, and took a higher number to get away from it. Any thoughts / confirmation / competing stories?
