Don't forget he was with the VFL team not the AFL team so he wouldn't really be all that versed with the Collingwood game plan. He may have had to follow a similar plan at the VFL but he had his own training and meetings etc with his players

Considering that Collingwood claimed that they had a half dozen players from the magoos that could step into the senior side at any point in time without issues, you would hope being their coach he had a fair idea of the game plan his players would be stepping into.

Massive get.

Any danger of recruiting players during trade week.

Oh well, Malthouse must have given Swanny his shopping list for next season.

Barker - Check
Richardson - Check
Rowdy - Check

If we build it he will come.

You would hope that the key to this puzzle is Alan Richardson who was Development Coach at Collingwood who would have been schooling the younger players in what was required whilst they were playing in the Reserves and for Brown to be implementing it.

If this is the case then we have to be patient - as it is at least a 3 to 4 year process.

But I am prepared to wait if we do it properly and not trying to plug gaps by recruiting 30 year olds.

Offer on the table to Laidley as well!

Mr Ratten may be getting slightly nervous?

Ripping appointments.. really invested heavily in 'development' guys with Richo and Brown. Reckon we need a real 'tactical' expert now . Obviously Neeld is your top tier appointment, but Laidley would still fit very nicely in this role.

If I was ratten I'd be more nervous with the coaches he had this year. Malthouse hasn't surrounded himself with dummies, ditto Ross lyon.

If we had a quartet of Ratts, Brown, Laidley and Richardson... the Senior coach would be the guy with the least amount of AFL coaching/player development experience (in years).

That's pretty weird when you think about it. Seems to be a definite trend in the AFL though.

Love the appointment.....

But my question would be.....he spent 6 years as an assistant....got downgraded or sideways graded to VFL coach...and then couldn't get back on the pies assistant team as an AFL assistant coach.....find that interesting I do :?

Collingwood didn't spare any expense. They wouldn't have kept Brown around cos he was a good guy. His role was player development, not tactics.

I would suggest one the of major reasons why the younger players from Collingwood step so easily and readily into the Collingwood Senior Team is that they ARE so WELL VERSED in the Collingwood game plan.

Brown would coach that side purely from a development and drilling perspective - based on the game plan and what Alan Richardson (when he was Collingwood Development Coach) was doing with the Development Academy.

This is why Collingwood have a Reserves Team rather than are aligned with a VFL team.

Is it coincidence that 3 out of the last 4 premierships have been won by sides who have their own stand alone Reserves Teams?
