I'm not in the pro Ratten camp and believe his position should be reviewed after an awful 2nd half of the year but a senior coach should be able to choose his assistants. If the coach can't be trusted with that then he should be let go.

That's the dilemma. Whose interest is Ratten acting in if he refuses the assistance of a Dean Laidley? His own interests I'd suggest at the clubs expense.
Personally, I think he's well off the pace as a senior coach and should he refuse a senior assistant, I'd move him on.

It is not a case of those at the club all saying "ratts you need a senior assistant" and ratts saying "no i refuse".

From afar, this is exactly the issue we have.

Whether you are pro or anti Ratts, one thing should not be in dispute. The club comes first. IF (and I do mean IF), the senior coach is putting his personal interests above the clubs, then we all know what should happen.

Especially if the club, in it's heart of hearts, does not intend for him to be coaching in 2012.

The Blues have moved to bolster their depleted coaching staff as well with the appointment of former Hawthorn forward John Barker as an assistant to senior coach Brett Ratten.

Barker, 35, spent just two seasons at Hawthorn as forwards coach after 2007-08 at St Kilda under Ross Lyon.

Ratten doesn't mind who his assistants are as long as they sit on the other side of Visy Park. :donk:

There's definitely some symmetry in his CV.

I wonder if he'll spend just the 2 years with Carlton as well?

Hopefully we'll realise how much of a dud he is and give him the arse well before 2 years is up.

What do you know about him that puts you off?

I've heard only good things about him from StKilda and Hawthorn people.

If he's so good....why does he get only 2 year tenures?....and the stories I get from Hawks supporters are not flattering unfortunately.

I don't know anything about Barker's coaching ability but I would have thought that if you were wanting a career in coaching then moving around every couple of years to gain experience and knowledge would be a pretty smart way to go about it.

And if you were backing yourself you could do worse than join a club that had a coach coming out of contract in 12 months time.

I reckon 90% of this board haven't heard him speak.
