Yes Gavroman, I know someone who is best mate with Johnny Barker, he has been interviewed by Carlton over the last 2-3 weeks.

Please Blues dont go near this guy! :banghead:

From the Hawthorn FC website:

Quote:
Fri, Sep 10, 10
Hawthorn Football Club assistant coach John Barker has informed the Club that he will not seek an extension to his coaching contract beyond this season so that he may pursue other opportunities.

Barker has spent the last two season working under senior coach Alastair Clarkson, who wished Barker well and thanked him for his time with the Club.

"Johnny has been a great servant of our Club as both a player and an assistant coach," said Clarkson.

Barker, who kicked 114 goals in 113 games as a player for Hawthorn (1998-2006) oversaw the Hawks forward line in his time as an assistant under Clarkson.

"I would like to thank him for his contribution to the Hawthorn Football Club and wish him and his family well as he looks to pursue other opportunities," added Clarkson.

Barker came to the Hawks having served as an assistant under Ross Lyon at St Kilda (2007-2008) following a playing career which started at Fitzroy (47games/12 goals, 1994-1996) before spending a season with Brisbane (8 games/1 goal, 1997), then moving to the Hawks where he played arguably his best football (113 games/114 goals, 1998-2006).

I'm a bit underwhelmed with John Barker.

Why aren't we targeting coaches from successful clubs: Geelong, St Kilda, Collingwood, even Sydney. Hawks may have won the flag in 2008 but they were average in 2007,2009 and 2010.

Barker was an awful forward line coach at St Kilda and Hawthorn (this year and last year)... it's no suprise St Kilda came good up front once he left.

They've signed an assistant coach before they've appointed their senior coach?

I find that hard to believe. :?

I would imagine it's Hird saying "get me him, and him, and him... and then we'll announce my appointment as part of a total coaching setup.

That way he avoids the "first time coach risk" conversation.

Smart move IMO.

Defensive coach?

We'll probably hire Josh Thurgood.

Interesting to see who we land as an assistant coach.

Seeing that this is the bullsh!t thread, I'll throw up one that is looking more likely now that he isn't favourite to get the gig at the Scum. Based on the dynamic at the club between Ratts and Swanny etc. and just who makes these decisions, it will be very interesting. I would suspect that Swannie would want this AC but maybe not Ratts, who knows, but I keep hearing that the Junkyard Dog is at the top of the wishlist. ;-)

If the rumours are correct that Hird, Williams, Wallis and Goodwin are set to join O'Donnell and Richardson over at Windy Hill, Laidley is likely to miss out there. He must hold that view too as I just got told he has agreed to hold discussions with us on Wednesday. We will soon know. Better news than John Barker being a lock as our Forward Coach, IMO.

Would love to have an experienced and obsessional tactitian like Dean Laidley in the box on match day. However if this came to be how motivated would Laidley be. On the surface his career is going backwards at a rate of knots. Senior coach to assistant under Mark Williams to now assistant under Brett Ratten? Would he be able to get himself up psychologically for the job ? Interesting times

If Laidley is deemed to be a superior tactician why not just bite the bullet and make him senior coach with Ratts as his senior assistant.....?

No, not since you gave us blatantly incorrect mail on Campbell Brown recently.

Hird to coach Bombers.
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/h ... 5930046780

'Senior mentor/coaching director..." to be decided out of WIlliams or Laidley.
Hopefully, we take the other one.

(btw, Not really comfortable with Barker, if this is true - was at Hawthorn after their premiership year, and since then their forwardline has not performed as smoothly and was at the Saints before they hit their straps...)

Hearing the line-up of assistants that could be advising Hird, our club needs to get this right!!

Any of the SANFL watchers...Nathan Bassett?

I suggested Bassett a while back, to no response. I do believe he would be a very astute pick though, in either a development or defence role. May be hard to pry him away from Norwood though.

How many "assistants" do you need advising you or mentoring you in a role of Senior Coach? Either you're ready as a senior coach or you're not.

As my boss said today, would you want 4-5 people telling you how to do things? O'Donnel and Richardson are 2010, Goodwin is just a former Captain at this stage with no runs on the board, and Williams a strong personality that will create an interesting environment. Wallis? Dangerous :sly:

We've been chasing Laidley since Round 21.. we're basically his fall back option. Very sad situation considering the strength and youth of our list not to have a cavalcade of quality assistants wanting to work under Ratten.
