Carlton had 32 clearances for the match. Aaron Sandilands had 13!
We need a quality inside mid and the ball wont leave our backs exposed one on one. look at the facts. Freo had 59 inside 50s compared to our 44 and we lost by a goal. The finger pointing at our backs since the game is over the top.
Forget the reactive responses. Stop the ball waltzing away from the stoppages and it will result in more wins than chasing a CHB will achieve.
Grigg, Hadley & McLean are our inside mids. Carrazzo should be in there too with his strength, but sorry to say they all have their achilles heal and it seems to me we need to improve in this area.
I think Austin will make CHB his position next year if he can get his body right.
Lets not make too many excuses for Jamo and Bower BV. Holding your opponent in front of the teeth of goaqls is a regular habit for Jamo in particular, and Bower also gives away soft frees too. Three reasons for that imo:
1. Haven't got the size to hold power forwards
2. Lost form and not playing their best
3. Loss of coinfidence.
Yes, I'm pointing the finger at these 2 blokes, because I have said consistently for a couple of months now that Jamo has gone backwards this year, and is sadly out of form, and we have no replacement for him with Thornton out of favour, Austin injured, White, selected as insurance in case Jamo falls to injury again, is injured...dejavu 2009.....whilst Bower has had a hugely interupted year after a very promising preseason.
Sure statistics which show 15 extra forward entries can suggest that our backline was overcome solely by the weight of numbers and therefore the sole reason why we lost. Lets not divert our attention from other glaring issues. Giving away soft free kicks and soft goals in a 50-50 contest in front of goal and then we lose by a goal is a different issue altogether imo.
I don't always care how many times the ball enters the opposition's forward entry because sometimes those statistics don't show that half of those forward entries may have reached the 49 meter mark on the boundary line and were rubbish entries (refer to Carlton's slump in the last 6 weeks). What I do care about is what our backmen do, time and time again when the ball is kicked to them and their opponent in a 50-50 situation in front of goal.
There's no statistical excuse imo that covers up weak defensive tactics, strategy and a lack of form.
