Money is money I suppose.

Good to have some good news for a change.

I wonder where our debt is at anyway right now?

Yeah, I was thinking this last night after watching reports of Melbourne wiping all their debt.

This was the picture for season 2009.

Profit: $8.67 million
Last year: $6.31 million
Revenue: $34.1 million
Football department costs: $16.1 million
Membership income: $7.65 million
Sponsorship income: $11.4 million
Gaming income: $2.8 million

Keep in mind we had to find an extra $2million for the new facility that is going to have a significant impact on the actual debt in 2010. Thanks to Bruce Mathieson, we will see a sharp increase in gaming revenue - however much of that is not likely to be factored in for this year. I'd suggest our debt, at season's end might still be somewhere in the vicinity of between $6-7 million.

There were a LOT of subtexts in that article.

Anyone who is going to donate millions of $$ to the club is going to expect results.

I think the pressure on Sticks is just racheting up a notch!

Michael Warner eh? What a quality 'journalist'. I love the language in this - 'rivers of gold...', 'Gambling losses at the four hotels...'. This guy is not very subtle is he?

Reading the comments below is always a study in anti- anything-to-do-with-carlton ravings of the toothless masses. What a fwe of them seem to have blithely missed was 'Two of the gaming venues were previously controlled by Richmond and the Western Bulldogs.
Tigers president Gary March this week told the Herald Sun his board felt no animosity towards the pokies baron over the decision that has wiped $300,000 a year from Richmond's books.' Some of these people would be tigers and doggies supporters, happy enough to take the money for their 'struggling' clubs but when carlton receives it... say no more.

Really not at all proud that this is the sort of income the Club is relying on. So many other ventures out there if the club is prepared to exercise a little clout.

Doc, it's worth noting that the development grants accounted for a lot (almost 90% in total) of our annual profit in 2008 and 2009. It also looks as though we consolidated our debt and loaned a little extra shortly before our audit in 2009, as the figure was a flat $6.5 million.

Given all the recent investment in facilities, no foreseeable large-scale costs (aside from contract pay-outs, but that's still well under half a million), the large kitty set aside and the boost in revenue from this donation, we should have been making in-roads to our debt levels during the season, and failing that we will over the next 24 months.

Once our debt is cleared, if this stream of revenue continues then I would really like us to put some of it aside for helping the community, gambling counseling, working with local youth, etc

It's bad karma to profit so directly from other people's misery :-/

I'd probably put up a lot less of a protest to more conventional forms of gambling, provided some of the profit was set aside as you suggested. It's pokies I can't stand. They're absolutely mindless games, and systematically drive every last dollar they can out of you.

Doing that would suggest an admission of having a guilty conscience, so that won't happen.

It is what it is, unfortunately.

You would think that we were the only friggin club generating revenue from Pokies.
Pokie venues by law need to put a fair bit of money back into the community and as a board member of a cricket club our local pokie venue fund our whole junior operation.

Maybe we should go down Melbourne's path of eradicating our debt by begging people for money, instead of setting up a sustainable stream of cash that will contnue to make revenue for the club well past the repayment of our debts...
You know what they say... Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a week. Teach a man to fish and, well... you get what I'm saying..

He's got a steady stream of fish to sell, so he can feed his pokie addiction?

Its the HUN trying to appeal to an audience made up mindless anti-Carlton people who grew up hating us when we were at our most successful (basically like all football journalists at the HUN).

Since when are Bulldogs and Richmond struggling more than us? What year is this? 1987?

This whole Carlton buys success/cheats and no one else non-sense just snowballs with the crap the constantly spew out. I was having a chat to a guy who worked in the MCC who was an Essendon* supporter, saying how he liked how Essendon* didn't buy success and nurtured their own (noting how we got Judd and cheated etc). He had little to come back with when I mentioned Essendon* is the only club found guilty of rorting the salary cap in a premiership year and how his club also wanted Judd.

I have $500 cash in my wallet. I might put it straight in a poker machine. If I win great, if I lose well I am helping the club. :donk:

Mathieson must have confidence in the current board and it's current president to be giving away such gifts.
