AFL rule clarification please.

There was a 50 metre penalty given against Robo (?) for running between the Bomber kicker and the Blue on the mark. But he was following Fletcher who ran the same way through the mark. I thought a player was allowed to run through the mark if he was following his opponent. Does anyone know the rule?

Regards Cazzesman

my understanding of the rule is that you are not allowed to run through the mark, regardless of what your direct opponent does.

What an important slaughtering of that dreaded opposition.
Best win since knocking over, er, both last year's GF's.
Time now for the Blues to slaughter their own inconsistency. New rule. Keep Hadley and Robinson in the team. They give Judd and Co the space required.
Tonight the victim may only have been the BPointers, forgetting history, but the right mix of personnel can still do a lot of finals damage. I prey.

Spot on Cazz. You can only say the umpire didn't see Fletcher.

There was another time when the umpire told AJ he was allowed to go between the mark because his man had gone through.

Robbo also needs to be within a certain distance of Fletch....but yeah he was stiff and seemed to be within the rules.

Yep.

The umpire got it wrong (or didn't see Gadget).

You are allowed to follow an opposition player without conceeding a free kick.

I can quote the rule if people are ignorant enough to need it.

Bower: 1
Ellard: 1

IIRC one of the umps even said to Robbo earlier in the game he could follow his opponent through the mark after he ran around an Essendon* player to avoid doing what he was later penalised for.

Watching the replay on foxtel. Robbo kicks the goal from the free when Hillie got reported and then we have a 'Benny Hill' moment.

As the ball is going back to the centre for the bounce, Hillie runs towards a group of 4 or 5 players. As he reaches the group he ducks his head and runs head first into Hammers chest. The umpire who is a metre away awards a free down field for a head high hit on Hillie.

Without doubt one of the stupidist decisions I saw during the night and there was a shite load of them to pick from.

Regards Cazzesman

Not much heart attack stuff for us this year.

76 points........biggest winning margin this year......against the Bummers!!!!!  .

Geelong-esque (circa 2006) ?

Only gaggin' but it was great to see us honour the jumper and Ratts tonite. Think Davies will be a player for us, but just not used to the pace after the whole year in the Red jumper (good size about him).

From the shit umpiring thread:

I don't think Hille should have been reported for the high contact to Robbo.

It was ridiculous, absurd, insane, abominus, ludicrous, nonsensical, preposterous that Hille got a 50 for high contact when he head butted.

If the match review panel has any sense at all, Hille will be suspended for head butting.

Lessons from tonight:

- Keep Waite in the forward line.
- Piss Etihad off as home ground. We belong and play better at the 'G
- Warnock is a player
- Ellard is a player

I agree, but I need to see more from Ellard.
He is very small, and I worry about his consistency.
Definitely on par with Armfield and Robinson as one of our biggest try-ers though.

Also love his ability to grab a ball out of a pack and quickly get it onto the boot, seems like something we struggle with

Sometimes.

Depends on if they see the free not.

I reckon they know the rules, they just get flustered in the heat of the battle.

Only employing them part time certainly doesn't help.

One of the sweetest wins I've ever been to. Gave the Essendon* supporters absolute hell all night, was fantastic to watch them squirm in their seats and make all sorts of excuses. Was even more amusing to have one of them try and call a rendezvous with me in the carpark after the match, and then do nothing when the siren went!

In summary....the perfect night!!!
