Funny business is football.

Sometimes you see Harvey interviewed and you just wonder how he ever got any gig.

Lets not forget the players responsibility in all of this.

Should a coach really need to tell an AFL player to attack the contest hard?

I wouldn't have thought so.

I don't know whether this has been covered here but I saw OWAAT and the Brett Ratten interview was on the AFL website soon after the game and it was complete as opposed to snippets on OWAAT. And as a result Luke Darcy takes it out of context. He loves making the negative calls on the Blues. He is an over-rated commentator.

True. And Ratten is a better meedyah performer than Harvey too. So, it's clear, we are on to a winner.

He was not at all convincing on Monday night, I noted that he didnt mention that the likes of Judd, Murphy, Gibbs & Kurezer have not improved this year.

How was it taken out of context??????????
I suggest you watch it again.
Darcy was spot on about the message a coach is sending to not only his players but his staff and members !!!

Darcy was correct and i found it very alarming to hear from a player that's played at the highest level.

I reckon people got out of it what they went in looking for.

Personally I didn't take much at all out of it at all.

The only thing I thought was noticeable was that Ratts was really trying to protect his players.

Ah no.

It is the message he was sending to the media, and the fans (members or not).

We have no idea what message he's sending to the players, and staff behind closed doors.

Unless you have some inside information you wish to share?

One of the big problems with media interviews is that we usually only hear the response, not the question.

So called journalists are very often extreemely leading with their questions.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Ratts comment about being 8 and 8, and still in the 8; was in response to whether he felt his job was under threat, not about our current form.

Yeah and his response about the club being in crisis was that everyone in the MEDIA had us outside the 8 so that's ok.

So it says to me that its acceptable to put in stinkers coz we aren't expected by anyone externally to do anything.
Can't imagine what the players thought..........TIME WILL TELL

To me it it says that the club is not in crisis.

That comment doesn't say anything at all about whether our current form is acceptable or not.

Huge difference between "acceptable performance", and "club in crisis".

So you admit that the message Ratts sends to the media/fans could be different to the message he sends to the players/staff?

Maybe he's peeling paint off the walls in the locker room, but his public message is designed to protect his players from the hyperbolic media, and Chicken Little fans.

Now whether they need/deserve protection is another matter entirely.

Would not know what Ratts says to the players.....sorry i should preface my statements with IMO.

I just look at a Malthouse, Clarkson or even an Eade when they win they are still filthy and it shows in there pressers.
And when they loose it sounds like they have put the fear of god in there players.

I remember Judd being interviewed On The Couch after our round 3 loss against the scum our biggest rival and they asked him after a loss like that in which we were very very poor did Ratts bake the players and Judd said no he talked mainly about where the players went wrong on the field.

IMO the players performance is reflective of our coach.
Worrys about stats too much and is soft on the players and is reactive in games.

Reminds me of Neil Craig.

The media thought he was a pussy cat; a calm, mild mannered, old man.

Behind closed doors, it couldn't be further from the truth.

He gives the players an absolute bake when needed.

I don't know it Ratts is like this or not.

I think it comes down to how you/Ratts think the players will respond to each different style of communication.

Personally my initial instinct would be to scream at the players.

But i'm sure that Ratts knows the players far better than I do; and knows how they would respond to different styles of communication.

Blasting the players may not get them to "fire up", and "prove the coach wrong"; it may do the exact opposite.

They may underperform just out of spite.

Gen Y are unique to say the least.

deano35 wrote:

Disagree. The right stats are very good indicators of what's going on in the game.

They don't provide the answers though; just help to define the problems.

deano35 wrote:

Maybe.

A - We don't know what goes on behind closed doors.

B - I reckon Ratts knows the players personalities better than us, and has a better idea of whether they will respond better to a bake, or encouragement.

Keep in mind that humans, just as dogs, and other animals respond far better to reward based training, rather than punishment based trainig.

deano35 wrote:

Agree. Ratts needs to be far more proactive, rather than reactive.
