David parkin was on AFL insider and in his interview he mentioned Brett Ratten called after the fevola trade and asked him "where he was going to find 90 odd goals from next year"

Does this

A) Show a flaw in his character, a lack of self confidence as a coach and a clearly a man lacking ideas.

B) A good move, turning to an old mentor to ask these types of questions and just a man confiding in somebody he has a great deal of respect for.

C) Its means nothing dont read to much into it.

I think it depends how it was asked.

If it was in desperation it shows the decision to offload Fevola wasn't one he was comfortable with, knowing he'd have to replace a guy who was our avenue to goal.

Ratts would rightly have expected Parkin to keep this confidential as they have/had
a close relationship.

Shame Parko decided to humiliate Ratts for asking for his advice.

Don't forget Parkin has referred to himself as a Hawthorn man, to which he is very entitled to at the same time as being a Carlton legend. I'm a little disappointed that he would have brought that up to be honest and only shows he is not to be trusted as much as previously thought. There is no shame in getting accomplished people's opinions on subjects they are experts in. Wouldn't you ask someone relative to your field about technical points?

Shouldn't jump to that conclusion without knowing the context of the conversation.

He may have said "glad to see the back of Fev, Parko, now I just have to find 90 goals a year".....chuckle. If it was an intended conversation with Parko re that specific topic in the form of coaching advice I doubt Parkin would share it.

Isn't Ratten seeking the advice of a respected premiership coach something to be encouraged?

As noted, we don't know the context in which the question was asked.

To me this is a good sign that Ratten is willing to seek advice and look for new ideas. Whether Parkin is the right guy to be asking in the context of football in 2010 is another question altogether, but I'd like to see more examples of our coaches seeking external advice/feedback/critique.

Firstly, let's put things into context. Ratten had no choice but to trade Fevola after the brownlow incident. For years he had seemed invincible, damaging the club, embarrassing the club, embarrassing himself, and letting down team mates and supporters, all because we 'needed him'. It's not a decision you make lightly, but it is a decision you make for the better of the club as a whole. Trading Fevola doesn't mean Ratts has no idea. It means he saw the club to be bigger than the individual. It is always hard to replace that quantity of goals, but I see no harm in asking a man as esteemed as David Parkin for a few thoughts.

The Fevola trade was the most courageous thing Ratten has done in 3 years at Carlton. The Mclean trade almost cancelled the benefits.

But I don't mind one bit if he's seeking a view from someone outside the bubble/cocoon who can provide a clear assessment on something or someone.

I'd go with C: it would have either been said in jest, or in a fleeting moment of self-doubt. Everybody has them.

Its C, wouldn't even be thinking/talking about it if we were winning. We would sort of laugh be like 'oh that Ratts, what a character'.

But because we are losing, EVERYTHING IS BAD
