Many a successful Carlton premiership team have celebrated at this pub and sad to see it go.

Probably most famous for our current president's inpromptu karoke session....

sad, the continued demise of inner city pubs.

Was alaways a great spot for a bevvy before and after a Carlton game, especially a win.

Having been a student at Melbourne in the late 80s I've seen Naughtons at its busiest but it's been dying for 15+ years now. Demographics change but the current owners didn't seem to notice. Back then the place was chock full of students every night but in the early 90s the licensing laws changed and good little bars started opening down back lanes in the city - that's where many of us migrated.

I've been a Parkville resident on and off since 1979 (including the last 5 years) but I'd never go there for a drink now. The current owners have a captive audience of academics and professionals on their doorstep waiting for them but keep marketing themselves to the handful of college residents who don't go to the city bars.

And as for the bottle shop and kitchen...

I ran up there late last year to get some extra champagne for a dinner party that had just run out and had a choice of a bottle of Veuve at more than $100 or a bottle or something called "Pink Bubbles" for $4.95. When you have a suburb full of wealthy professionals on your doorstep why would you join the Duncans bottle shop branding mob and sell crap? It could easily have been very different. I know half the residents of Parkville and we'd all happily go in there for dinner if they'd provided a decent chef and a decent bottle shop with interesting local wines and beers. Instead we get offered $10 schnitzels and Pink Bubbles.

There's no shortage of examples of inner Melbourne pubs that have reinvented themselves and stayed relevant without trashing their heritage. Naughtons could still be one of them. South Parkville has a heritage overlay over the whole of it so we're not going to end up with a massive redevelopment. It just needs a creative operator to take it over. If not I'll mourn the lost opportunity but not the loss of something that's no longer anything more than a crap dive.

My memories of Naughtons are from the 90s. I was mates with a couple of Carlton players at the time and so I tagged along to a few Mad Mondays and the celebrations after '95. Some fairly naughty behaviour went on, but mostly harmless fun and games...

Ahh....memories :smoking:

I go back a lot longer -

Melb Uni in early 1970's. Was my Cricket Club's pub in mid 70's.

Only been there once in last 15 years though.
