It's such a great thing to set our goals at the start of the year and not have to worry about unimportant things, like how the season might play out when the real action starts, or how other teams' form may surprise us which may impact on where we could end up on the ladder.

I love it. Such clarity and singleminded vision should be applauded. It's not like a season throws you a curveball at any stage. Steady as she goes and all that.

Evidently, the fact we could have seriously pushed for top four and actually contended this year is unimportant considering we'd decided in February that making the eight, and maybe sneaking an elimination final win was good enough. Never mind that that when we dropped our bundle it was wrong/funny to be questioned because journos outside the club didn't think we were any good in the first place.

What would Ratts do in Freo's position then? Talk up yesterday's 82 point loss? Accept dropping out of the 8 as most people didn't think they would be higher than 12th?

He expects us to play finals.

What a coach says or doesn't say to the media etc is irrelevant. The only thing that counts is our on field performance. For me our performance in the past six weeks has been abysmal. Our wins against Brisbane and West Coast were very ordinary. I have a very real fear that we will be absolutely smashed by the pies this week based on our current form.

No comment on Waite?

Agreed....I know all games throw up totally different variables but boy how my blood boils watching a passionate, hard running and fierce tackling Melb beat Sydney.

Its does throw you a bit when a team we thrashed beat a team that thrashed us. I am sure the Cats are wondering the same things today after seeing Port do the crows over.

what's the point of sneaking into a prelim and getting slapped around, look at the doggies 4 eliminations in a row and not any closer to the big prize .... all in our good time .... 2011, 2012 or 2013 with a cup ... not the saucer

I would KILL for us to play a prelim at the G. How much more would the team get out of that than a trumped up H&A game in some interstate outpost?

I'm a firm believer that experience counts for a lot in finals - winning experience anyway. If we get to the prelim it means we've won at least one final.

Besides all that... would any team, looking at our Geelong performance, want to play us on a fast deck at the G in September? Sure, they would all have a lot of plans to prevent us from putting on such a display again, but the fact is we are capable of great things if the intent is there.

This is what frustrates me about the seeming complacency from the club on how the season has turned out. Top 4 means two finals at the G. If our form had of stayed at a level which saw us into top 4, I would've liked our chances against any opponent we would have met in those two games. And those two games would be real finals.

Well done Ratten ... we will make the finals for a second year in a row with a less than adequate group of players who find it difficult to maintain a reasonable skill level and who continually make wrong decisions.

Fortunately ... your contract is not dependant on some of the views at this web side.

Pfft..... Spare me, please!

This is accepting mediocrity and IMHO, thats not what this football club is about!

Agreed. I said something similar in a previous thread. At 7-4, we needed to re-establish our goals and aim higher. All we did was back slap and take the foot off the pedal. Pathetic

Remember when we were humiliated every week by 100 point thrashings?

I'll take today's position thanks.

I am moving through the stages too.

While I'm progressing on my course to emotional stability via acceptance, I am trying to think of a playing group who have had quite so many excuses made for them. I haven't come up with one yet, but I will continue to try.

Milli Vanilli...

Or how about the Stone Roses.. capable of greatness, very fragile, known to walk off stage during performances if things didn't go their way.

Ryan Adams could fit into that category too.. maybe he's the best fit.

Remember when we won a flag every three years and were envied as the best in every facet of football.

I won't take today's position thanks.

Never forget what Carlton was, and what we should be trying to make it again.

Thought Warnock was outstanding played a great game for the club.
Carlton 12th in the number of 100 game players, and sitting in the eight.
He thinks the club is where they expected it to be, as long as they keep ahead in the win loss ratio.
Army ok scans ok might play.
McLean should be in the bullants this week - AFL website has him as going in for surgery on his hip today so Ratts is either not talking to the medico's or just making stuff up
Etihad surface safe, our players wear long cleats or screw ins. No short stops.
Gibbs and Grigg in mid field helping out Judd,.

I don't care if Ratts speaks crap in the media.
I don't care how he looks.
I don't care how he sounds.

All I care about is how Carlton plays - because that is the only true reflection on the coach.

When you see the lack of confidence the players have in eachother and in their structures, and how that manifests as the aimless, gutless, confused football that we have witnessed for the past 2 months, you know where Brett Ratten and the coaching staff are at.

But somehow if we beat two more bottom 4 teams and make the 8 - It's all good baby!

Well.....ATM the fixture says we're only facing one bottom 4 side before the Finals.

Can't get one past you!

Yes, I thought Essendon* were bottom 4. But you're right, their win has taken them to 6th bottom.

So that's where we've set our sights, then:

If Ratts can 'mastermind' wins against teams 12 and 15, we will make the eight, and we are magically 'on track'. Perfect!

Extend the contract! Hurrah!
