Regardless of your opinion on the players skills, the coaches tactics, or the MCs selections; it is plainly obvious that the players have not been performing at the required intensity over the last few matches.

Thanks to the draft, and the salary cap, the AFL is far more even than ever before; and the teams that bring a consistent effort, not just week after week, not just quarter after quarter, but contest after contest; give themselves a clear advantage to win.

So whose reponsibility is it for ensuring the players play with that endeavor?

Personally I think there's only so much coaches can do, and it's the responsibility of each individual to perform at an acceptable level of intensity.

Clearly the players agree:

Players to blame for loss: Simpson

Quote:
“We take full responsibility,” Simpson said.

“Brett’s maybe just saying that in the media but we, as the players, definitely take responsibility for how we’re starting [matches].

“Brett’s up in the coaches’ box. He can’t really do much once the game’s started. He can pull a few changes but it’s definitely on us once the game starts.”

What say you?

Who or what motivated them earlier in the year when they were flying?

They used the corridor.....kicked precisely to team mates.....tackled fearlessly; and won some good games against good opponents.

These are the pertinent questions IMO.

It's a mental thing...

Professional sportsman that can't motivate themselves don't deserve to be on the payroll.

They're not children. It's the coaches job to not aggravate them or erode their confidence, but they are supposed to have motivated themselves to play.

Professional athletes all have different methods of self-motivation. Over time, they would have sorted out what works best for them. Coaches might give parting instructions, but no matter how technical the coach - they are all likely to be a similar message of follow team rules of the day, work together, be accountable and let's get off to a good start.

Guys like Dangles Armfield, Chooka McLean and Mitch Robinson are very vocal in the rooms before a match. That's their style. A Michael Jamison or Shaun Hampson are at the other end of the scale vocally...but again - that's their style...their motivational style works for them.

Noel McCarthy takes the boys for a stretch and a run on the ground and is a pretty good judge of whether or not someone is or isn't switched on. A pat on the bum is about all you can do at that stage...it's up to the players...or more importantly - it's up to the leadership group of the day.

IMO if you can't motivate yourself you'll never succeed at the highest level.

If you're studying a shit subject you find it hard to get/stay motivated.

What if they paid you to study the subject? What if your mates were studying with you and to achieve success you all had to get distinctions?

You're not always going to get the lecturer you want...but there's always someone you can go to, to get good advice.

Thanks for the insight Doc.

I have a simple question. How do you get better leaders? Time? Experience? Buckets of cash?

if you look at 'em as entertainers, they only have to put on one show a week, and get really well paid for it.
The entertainment manager can rev 'em up..tell them what works and what doesn't..but in the end...if they don't take their job seriously..what can you do?
It's like good or bad customer service in the end.
The last five weeks,
we've had the equivalent of the shop chic filing her nails and telling you to wait while she chats on the phone.
Same with a great band...they are always switched on for their performances.
That is their job...they take it seriously...and are grateful for the chance to be creative, and get well paid for it.
If the boys are grateful, they have not been showing it.

I understand the players should be able to motivate themselves.

However, I think the coaching staff should have the werewithal to sense when the players are not motivated and be able to provide measures to give the players a bump along. Whether that's on the training track, during pre-season, at quarter time on the field; whatever it takes.

It doesn't necessarily have to come from the senior coach either. He just needs to make sure his players are switched on and ready to play.

Each player is different and is motivaed in different ways - it is the coaches job to know & understand how each player reacts to the coaches directive/s.. it's called man management.. you cant keep treating a whole group in an equal manner all thr time - some players have independant/individual requirements....

So does it seem by recruiting choice/ team balance we have too many introverts?
The entire Hawks list seems to be plucky young upstarts.
I always like a mad ruckman at the bounce, we have all Doris Day's Sauce, Hammer, Kreuz, 206, give me a car jumping Geebung drunk like Renouf or a mad stare O'hAilpin on the ball to make nasty and bring the others into a contest.
Intensity is modern football, guys like Russell, Gibbs, Murphy, Yarran, Garlett, even Jamison lately don't bring it to every contest.
Switching on is the players responsibilty, the problem is if you never drop anyone when their GPS numbers are down or the lay no tackles or get any contested ball: well it's just talk right?
I also subscribe to post signing contract fatigue syndrome for a few, check the DSM4
