Using Richmond and Hardwick as an example should be done fairly club 29.

Well as one of the great men of the 20th century Frank Zappa said when he replied to a journos question about his music.

" You either get it or you dont "

Very simple to say they have lost 9 in a row

Richmond got the wrong coach in Teflon Terry

Hardwick inherited a basket case
So what he has he done
He delisted Bowden
Brown
Coughlan
Hughes
Johnson
Oakley -Nicholls
Pattison
Pettifer
Putt
Raines
Richardson
Schultz
and during the season Simmonds
He has also told Roberts to go back home and get fairdinkum

With the possible exceptionof Schultz these guys were not going to take the Tigers any further

He wont play McMahon,Morton(despite being Richmond' leading goalkicker last year) Polo

The guy has a clear agenda for the future

So they lost the first 9 games
Thats possible when you inherit a basket case or a team teflons coached
It aint going to happen overnight
He has a clear view of what he wants and the sort of playing style he desires from every player.
And if it doesnt happen he deals with it quickly
There is a clear purpose for the future

Forget about game plans and just think about playing as a team

Houlihan and Thornton would not get a game at Richmond for obvious reasons

Hardwick is on a clear path for the future
Ratten aint

Think about it
In Hardwick's half season as coach he has stamped his authority on the club
has rats done that in his 2 and half seasons as coach.

So Rattten wouldn't have sacked those players, sent Roberts home and demoted the other three players if he was coaching Richmond?

Richardson retired like Stevens.

Ratten has

coached a side into the finals without Waite, Walker, Bower, Warnock, O'hAilpin, Austin and Jamison playing a large part of last season or at all
sacked a Coleman Medallist and AA player to send a message to the playing group
lost one of our best kicks in Stevens to injury
demoted Scotland and Houlihan in 2009 to send them a message.
The latter in particular has changed his game plan to shut down star half backs.
Dropped Thornton before White's injury

Game plan might need some work, but Ratten isn't as bad as you think he is.

Yeah Zappa, nice one.

Just pointing out you can only compare HArdwicks first year to Ratts first year because we dont know where the tigers will go from here.
Other teams fans were impressed and scared of Ratts in 2008 when he retired off Kouta and Lappin and started playing the kids in his first year. Took us to ten wins.

You can choose to look past that if you want.

Comparing Ratts with Hardwick is like comparing apples and oranges.

You need to compare him with coaches that have been coaching for more than one year but less than five years.

Alistair Clarkson
Matthew Knights
Mark Harvey
Ross Lyon
Dean Bailey

How does Ratts stackup?

Not the worst nor the best... average..

Hey Hellas what's with the Thornton Carrazzo comedy act?

I've never potted either of them.

But I do reckon Carrazzo plays out of his capabilities. He should be told he's got two jobs and two jobs only - and which one it is is dependent on the opposition selections.
He's an inside grunter to pump it out to Judd, Murphy et al (and not be a outside receiver - because his disposal is not up to it) or,
he should tag heavily - as he did with Davey etc.

He is not a outside link up player by any means and lets us down with the reverse spin when in possession and bad disposal.

Thornton is much maligned but I think he probably does his best with the tools he's got. We need another tall back to stand up - white, Austin etc - and grab the opportunity here.

I would drop Joseph for Ellard and Houlihan for Grigg against the swans.

It's gonna be a grunt fest.

Hehe soz it was more a stab in the dark than anything else.

I can't see Joseph being dropped and don't want Hoops dropped either but I do want to see Grigg in the side and thought it quite farcical that he was given one game and one game only. I also want to see Lucas in again. Who to drop?

The side has been ordinary since the win against Port Adel in round 8. This is due to the likes of Walker, Russell, Armfield, Simpson, Scotland, Kurezer (grant he is now injuried), Judd, Ohalipin, Waite, Joesph & Carrazzo all losing form. The reason why we peaked from mid april to mid May was because our 2nd stringers were playing above themselves and this reflected our excellant performances against Geelong, St Kilda & for 3 quarters against Collingwood. For Carlton to regain form and confidence they need to have a bonding session. I cast all your minds back to when St Kilda went to the pictures a couple of years ago and ended up playing in a premlimary final.

season 2010 is not lost yet and a win against Sydney should be the tonic to set our season back alight.

Kouta I could counter argue every argument who have written but I will take you up on Houihan

There is nothing wrong in tagging the key loose man in the opposition defence.

Houihan does it well
its a role he has been doing for a few years now.

Houlihan takes his man away from the contest.

That is the what the coaching staff plan and implement as far as Houlihan's roll in the team

If he kicks a few goals its a bonus

Houlihan is our most experienced player with excellent skills yet the MC are happy he shuts down a Fisher or a Heath Shaw .Thats all

Our most skilled player has a defensive roll in the team
Makes a lot of sense doesnt it

Then there is the issue of his hardness

There have been too many games where he might as well wear a dress like Sunday where he trotted around and did @#$%&! all

AND I WALKED OUT

because I had seen it too many times

And I would suggest that Just liked skilled squibs like Morton and McMahon he would be playing for Coburg.

You guys dont get it.

Its about raising the flower bar people

Hardwick will not play half arsed football players and only play blokes who put in

That builds team unity . then you start thinking about a game plan then another .....

Hardwick has a defined path he has started on . You can see it .

And its possible as the Tiggies have shown that there is gold to find when it comes to mentally and physically tough players
Farmer
Mason( looks like a girl but has it all over Houlihan in terms of
intensity)

And as for Warnock
We didnt miss him in 09
We wont miss him in 2010
We never will miss him because he is useless.

We play Richmond round 20

Dont put your house on us winning.

Mark Maclure on AFL 360 before had a fair bit to say about the Carlton coaching staff. Interesting viewing it was.

Maclure said that:
- End result was poor
- He was in the rooms before the game, hadn't been in the rooms for quite a while.
-Things have changed in the space of 5 or 6 years
-It is easy to get a side from being ordinary to good.
-Not so easy to get a side from being good to great
-Not certain Carlton are a better team than they were last year
-Thinks the problem is not to do with the players, but to do with the coaching staff
-Recommend that Ratten goes and undertakes extra courses which will help him work on his skills to manage 42 players, 5 or 6 other coaches, and about 30 other staff.
-Brett's job is enormous, and you need to learn before you take the reigns.
-Was unsure what he did before he took the Carlton job, but would not hold him in good stead for his current position.

Of course it's his job to say everything fine and dandy, admitting the opposite would force him to actually take responsibility and do something about it...

Captain Dan - interesting take from Maclure... did he suggest anything else besides having Ratts go back to uni?

Not really. His view was mainly that it is a tough gig coaching an AFL side, and you need to know exactly what you're doing- you either know how to handle things or you don't. He feels Ratts cannot cope with the current demands and thus, needs a bit of extra training. I found his last comment, that his previous coaching roles wouldn't really hold him in good stead for what he is doing now, may ring a little true. Ratten was senior coach at Norwood footy club in the Eastern Football League, and then an assistant at Melbourne from my understanding.

Mark's a good bloke, but Ratten's job isn't to manage 30 other staff. Steven Icke (Manager Football Dept) and Greg Swann (CEO) manage staff. That's very much a David Parkin management style, and not reflective of football clubs today.

geez I remember a time when Sellars didnt know wether he as Arther or Martha his form was so bad that he was shifted to defence and vowed never to play forward again - was dropped to the twos to find form and went back forward he had a season or two of very ordinary football

He has never coached that I know of - and when I was playing in High school champinonships he came along to give us a talk-At first I thought he was gay and apart from a talk from Sheedy a couple of weeks earlier it was the most uninspiring talk I have ever heard
AS to the game result it was abandonned as our captain who at the time was part of the Carlton colts belted the umpire into next week and never played again - Maclure response was that the umpire was a spastic and deserved it -Needless to say Maclure and the club got a please explain

How does Sellars now become the be all and end all - He just seems to have taken over from Swan Mackay and snipes in the back ground

THink it was the other way around. Melbourne, Norwood and then assisant at Carlton.

My analysis

Aaron Joseph - Back Pocket, Tagger - Should remember his role - Tag only, stop your man, get a kick when you can.
Michael Jamison - Full Back - Needs to play in front.
Bret Thornton - 3rd Tall Back, Pinch up forward - Needs to kick forward quickly, no side to side rubbish

Heath Scotland - Utility - Needs to show leadership when team is down
Paul Bower - 2nd Tall Back - Should only play when fit
Ryan Houlihan - Utility - Needs to show leadership when team is down

Jordan Russell - Utility - Has been solid most weeks
Kade Simpson - Utility/ Forward - Needs to show leadership when team is down
Andrew Walker - Utility - Needs to show leadership when team is down

Chris Yarran,- Small Fordward/ Utility - Needs to play 4 quarters
Setanta O'hAilpin - Utility - Needs to lead up the ground, poor overhead mark
Bryce Gibbs - Utility - Needs to kick forward to position

Jeff Garlett - Forward - - Needs to play 4 quarters
Lachie Henderson - Utility - - Needs to play 4 quarters
Eddie Betts - Forward / Rover - Needs to lead and read the flight of the ball off hands. - Needs to play 4 quarters

Sam Jacobs - Ruck - Has been solid
Chris Judd - Ruck Rover/ Forward - Kicking please
Marc Murphy - Rover/ Forward - Needs to show leadership when team is down

Dennis Armfield - Utility/ Back - Needs to play 4 quarters
Shaun Hampson - Ruck/ Forward - Needs to hold marks
Mitch Robinson - Utility/ Forward - Needs to play 4 quarters
Andrew Carrazzo - Utility/ Back - Needs to show leadership when team is down

As you can see we have a number of inexperienced players who are asked to play 4 quaters. We also have a number of experienced players showing limited leadership when the team is down. Almost every player made unforced errors, this includes Judd. I suspect that some players are getting ahead of themselves. Most of our problems are mental. Reminds me of a few previous eras 83-85, 88-94 teams. Plenty of talent, but lacking in desire and application, used lack of personnel and injury as excuses.

Guys wake up and get on with it.
