yes to the last two posters. Even Walls fell for it......well I shouldn't say 'even', I'm not sure his thought processes stray far below the surface.

As MrsD said, the errors are more salient and attract more attention.

He should take a leaf out of Heath Shaw's book and we should get a player on the edge of the box, let JR kick to himself and play on get the shepherd from Jamo or whoever we place there, then proceed to bang it long which is his best kick.

Whenever he tries to pinpoint a pass and thread the needle he has turned it over all year.

you all know me as one of the biggest JR haters on here in the past few years...........

However............

As shit as JR has been in kick-ins............ I'd actually leave him there. BUT HE NEEDS HELP!

He needs assistance and direction. But he has a sense of belonging, and thats important!

We need to find someone else to do the kick ins......

JR is way to valuable, especially with his line breaking running, to be on the last line of defense. Get him up around the half back line and give him the ball to deliver to our half forwards.

Thursday night our kick in were the best this year in that we quickly got it in play and most of the time found people in space, getting it to the wing with minimal pressure........yes Russell sprayed a few which were costly but the ideas right.....whether someone else can do the same with less mistakes im not sure, Russell drilld it head height the whole way which greatens the chance of miss kicking it but when he connects right it give us more time to create run & space.

Id rather spray a couple playing attacking then chip it to the pocket everytime making it harder to create plays.

Kicking in should be done by Simpson, much like how Campo used to take them.

He has the ability to go long or short.

We should be looking for longer options where possible to use or Ruckman. Both should be on the ground for kickins.

When going short Simpson, should then run hard for the next posession and then settle himself back on the wing.

While taking the kickin, players must zone hard.

We have made far too many mistakes kicking in short.

Players need to be aware of the tempo of the game and know when to hold the ball while to zone setups up or alternatively, push for one-on-one.

The only way this can work is if the back six becomes more settled.

Walker Jamison Joseph

Russell Bower Scotland (eventually Lucas)

I really hate it when they go cross goal 30m out, usually to gibbs, needs to be spot on, but gee not pleasant for the spectator.

I would like to see our ruckmen taking some marks on the wings more, but I guess if they don't present and they can't mark, then carry on.

Also like to see Bower running it out, but he needs to play for that to become a weapon.

To answer the question though, I don't mind Russell, he is going ok on them. I absolutely do not want to see Walker doing it though, he will be the death of me.

I was initially against it but I believe Ratts has given Russell a lot more confidence by showing faith in him.

How many players in the whole league would go an entire game kicking in without one or two of their kick ins sailing back over their head for a goal?

Russell is doing well. Leave him there. But have others doing it too. Keys, IMO, for strong kick in strategy:

1) Receivers - what options are they providing and what tactics are the team using to give these options? Often, Russell's indecision stems more from a lack of movement and options from the rest of us. Sometimes, we screw up b/c he refuses to kick to a dead pocket, which most of us would support and take the risk that comes with it.

2) The next kick... whatever kick out is used, how are we setting up for the next option down the field?

3) Variety - of options, of kickers (keep the opposition guessing more)

4) The kicker: a) Decision making (MOST important), b) Kicking ability

5) The kicker following up to provide a running option to the receiver, esp from a short kick

6) Fall back - big pack marks, kick to pack on the boundary, long bomb up the middle - when to use which

Our kick in strategy needs constant work and practise. Who kicks the ball in is just one piece of the puzzle.
Leave JR there, bring in some others to help and focus more on what we are doing up the ground to create productive options.

Not only one of our best kicks, but also a 'quick' kick. The ball gets there hard and fast when Jordan is kicking it. No slow floaters.

JR has been a revolution  at the kick in's imo.. And has been fantastic for 90% of the season

Yet the cheer squad half-wits still yell out things like 'You're a HACK Russell' :donk:

I don't think our kick outs are that much of an issue...we have improved in this regard this year....what needs lots of work is what we do going forward...there still seems to be little clear strategy when we go inside 50..for a team that wins so much of the ball we do not get enough value for the possession we create...

Do they really? Even if he was a hack what would yelling that to him mid game achieve? Never understood that.
