Here's a role for an out-of-form Setanta this week against Fremantle...

Could be a match winner too!

Get him to tag Pavlich for the whole game.

Has the same body to match the guy and will be led nicely all day to where the ball is.

Thoughts?

I don't think he can run with Pav all day.
I think we need to teach Setanta why he was out of position or not competitive.
To me, he is a bit like a first year player - does a couple of very good things in most matches, tries hard but can go missing for much of the match.
I believe he has done well for 2/3 of his matches this year and still has upside. The break is coming at a great time for him and for Kreuzer and a few others.

Setanta needs a bigger challenge than that.
He's been there and done Pav.
Easily beat Pav in a 4 quarter effort.

Setanta has to challenge himself.
He's got to cut loose and grab the game by the scruff of the neck.

I like the idea because as you say Pav will lead him to the ball.
But he needs to take some solid marks and lay a few good tackles to get back in the swing.
He's looked a bit stiff lately.

I'm guessing Hendo will come in for him if he's rested this weekend; I know I would.
But the again Setanta was almost best afield with his match winning 4 goals 2 against Freo last year at Freo.
He took some good overhead marks that day. It'll come back by September.

Might be an idea to have him play CHF, and push right up to link up and open up the forward 50 for Waite & the smalls. He'll get a few uncontested grabs, and a whole lot less hits.

I said at the start of the year that If we leave Setanta up forward then he's capable of kicking 40+ goals a year!

I take that back....................... cause now I think he's capable of kicking beyond 50!

The problem isn't with Setanta (although he is down on form). The problem is that in the last few weeks we haven't looked like having a forward line structure at all.

Friday night, this was clear evidence. We dominated the clearences and our players looked to 'play-on-at-all-costs' only to find there was nobody to kick too :banghead: that results in turn-overs and a 30 point loss!

Not only that, North Melbourne's defenders were the biggest possesion getters on the night because, quite simply, they had the whole forward line to themselves.

Setanta is a 198cm strong bodied tall forward capable of kicking goals! Leave him in the square. If he doesn't take the mark he can at least bring it to ground for our very talented crumbers to do their best!
Setanta, for all he's awkwardness, very rarely goes to ground and the best thing about him is he has the ability to keep the ball in dangerous areas of our forward line.

Setanta / Fevola / Sticks / whoever................. nobody is gonna kick goals if your not gonna have a forward line.

He has shown that he can play the role that he is supposed to play within the team.
He should now play the same role in the Bullants until he gets his form back.

I've rarely seen him take a contested mark.

I would suggest a new role for out of form posters who don't understand forward play, the clubs expectations for Setatanta, how poor the supply was last Friday.

Nevermind any o that, i'm just saying, i've rarely seen him take a contested mark. If he isn't supposed to take contested marks then so be it. I was just putting that out there.

Actually Michael you are right, contested marks shouldn't really be an issue. I shouldn't have brought that up. Would be good if he could though.

Time for Setanta to have a run with Ants to find some form.

That's fine if it was just last week but it has been the last 4 weeks we are talking about.

Rnd 9 vs Hawks 1 goal (we lost by 56 points. Ball hardly went past the 50 arc). He was FF.
Rnd 10 vs WCE 3 goals (we won by 29 points. He did his job). He was FF.
Rnd 11 vs Melb 1 behind (we won by 41 points. He had a hand in our 1st 5 goals). He was FF.
Rnd 12 vs NM 1.1 goal (we lost by 29 points. Ball hardly went past 50m arc) He was FF.

Yeah I'd agree the last month's output isn't too flash, and he needs to get more of a touch during match time to keep him sharp.
Based on the trend he is not going to get many more touches in the seniors but he might in the Ants. Should do him a world of good.
Hendo's form has been solid in the lat 3 weeks.

In all fairness Setanta has not been getting good supply at FF. I think our midfield has dropped off a bit, and as mentioned our A grade midfield look like they expect Judd to get us over the line. Unfortunately Judd has been heavily tagged in recent weeks.
Maybe it's not Setanta's fault he hasn't kicked more goals.

He has beaten Pav in the past though. Food for thought.
