Weighs in at what... 77 kilos? I know it's not the be all and end all but chances are he'll get knocked off the ball fairly easily considering his agility isn't flash enough to avoid the first hit consistently.
Can he deliver under that kind of pressure, eg. free his arms, ride the bump. I reckon they'd be about 20% heavier and 20% faster in the AFL, so he's got to lift his reaction times to match.
I think he has been hard done by by the match committee. Has already won the best and fairest and looks like winning it again this year. Getting overlooked for senior birth by players who haven't exactly set the world on fire for the bullants.
Being a rookie is a tough gig. Reckon if he was a top draft pick instead of a draft rookie he would have had more senior opportunities by now.
As for his height being an issue, at 177 cms he actually is a good overhead mark. He is an inch shorter than both Armfield and Joseph but a much stronger overhead mark.
At this stage he offers more than Brock. Can and does go forward and knows where the goals are. Plays with accountability and can effectively tackle.
The only question mak I have relates to his ability to effectively dispose of the ball under pressure, the same concern I have with Brock. In the VFL grand final he was effectively nullified by some close marking and got caught with the ball before he could release it.
The fact that in the past two games Ellard has been by all reports clearly more effective than Brock entitles him to deserve the benefit of doubt and a spot this week.
