Out:

Browne - looked overawed at times tonight. Good kid, does a lot of good things, but gets lost. Need to bring in players who don't fear making mistakes.

Joseph - for a defensive player, you have become utterly woeful in one-on-one defending, particularly in the back line; time for a spell after a long-standing decline in your play

Hadley - congratulations on cracking the 20 disposal barrier for the first time this season, with 7 tackles, 11 contested possessions and 6 clearances to boot, but nothing in your game stood out from several other midfield players, and worse still Judd was caught in the calamity when he was trying to make a run for the receive. You barely got free at all once the stoppage was over, and it was a joke to watch.

In:

Grigg/McLean - Don't mind which but we need someone who can take the heat off Judd and set up a channel for him to win clearances in a less taxing fashion. Grigg has some defensive issues, but can at least provide outside the play and seems to have worked on his disposal. McLean has it all, except that his decision making needs to lift at senior level and his body isn't showing him much love. People who question is clearance ability and disposal are not watching him at all; it's important to distinguish between disposal and ability in possession.

Bower - goes without saying, but with Joseph out he'll be helping Russell & Walker man the medium players/young talls.

Yarran - this kid needs to come back in for the forward line structure to open up again given Setanta clearly feeling the pinch from a very tough 11 weeks. All those clever leads Eddie made in the first 6 or 7 rounds are now completely useless because Yarran hasn't been there to open up the space with his high leads and excellent disposal. We need Houla on one flank, and Yarran on the other.

Others on the chopping block:

Setanta - may need a week off
Kreuzer - may need a week off

Jacobs - as much as I enjoy the dynamic that he and Kreuzer offer, that ceases to be outside the stoppage, save for rare kicks that give him the opportunity to show the value of a ruckman with clean hands. We need to have a look at Hammer, who can do plenty in the ruck and absolutely terrorise in general play.

Carrazzo - lack urgency all night and it cost us repeatedly both defensive and offensively. Needs a kick up the backside considering that he is a senior player.

Others on the cusp:

Lucas - offers pace, poise, skill, aerial ability & defensive ability. Will need him to man smaller types and provide a different avenue out of defence sooner rather than later.

Hampson - adds another dimension whether he can mark the ball or not; adds three dimensions if he can.

Henderson - works too hard not to be in senior calculations. Star in the making who needs to be more confident with his set shot ability, which is outstanding in terms of technique and touch; just lets his nerves get in the way.

Without taking injuries into account I'd like to see us lineup like this against the Dockers next Saturday evening;

F Betts - O'Hailpin - Garlett
HF Yarran - Henderson - Houlihan
C Waite - McLean - Simpson
HB Gibbs - Bower - Scotland
FB Walker - Jamison - Russell
RU Kreuzer - Judd - Murphy
IC Jacobs - Armfield - Lucas - Carrazzo
EM Robinson - Joseph - Thornton

In: Henderson, Yarran, Bower, McLean, Lucas
Out: Robinson, Joseph, Thornton, Browne, Hadley

I did have Carrots out for Robinson but must take into consideration that Carrots had a great game the last time he played the Dockers.

Positive -- Fremantle play St Kilda on Sunday then have to play in Melbourne on Saturday night whereas we already played. Let's hope the Saints and Dockers run eachother into the ground in that game. St Kilda can go extra hard as they have their week off in the first week of the split round.

if we give those sock cocks a week off......

We should play a scratch match, with any poor performance by any player meaning they play Bullants for at least 6 weeks.

Can't agree with Hadley. Thought he might have been dropped last week but not after his game tonight. After Judd and Gibbs when he finally went in there, he was our best player in the contests. Not effective around the ground but in congestion when most others struggled to win the ball let alone dispose it efficiently, Hadley had quick and accurate hands. In contrast to Mclean who's a touch slow with his decision making.

Henderson has to come in. Unlike Setanta in recent weeks, he always gives a contest. If he doesn't mark it, he'll bring the ball to his feet and contest hard for it. Honestly can't recall him being cleanly outmarked whereas Setanta is under AND over running the footy constantly.

I like it jimmae. Well explained.

I like the idea of rotating players. Keep them fresh. Keep them hungry. Keep them in the loop. But make sure they are playing because they are in form. A slight decline in form requires rotation imo. The following rotations are possible:

Rucks: Kreuzer Sauce Hammer and Warnock. (with Kreuzer given a break forward if not played in the ruck)

KPF: Setanta Kreuzer Henderson Waite (Setanta needs a rest, like Hendo did)

Midfield in and under (protect Judd) Hadley McLean Grigg (Hadley is too loose, McLean needs to show some speed by hand foot and mind)

Re jimmae's post:

Hadley....I saw that too. I think the commentators just looked at the stats and said he had a good game based on them.
McLean/Grigg....why not? Lets see the form of these guys this week in the Ants. We need to protect Judd, but we MUST pick on form.

Been saying it for a while, that Kreuzer is a good ruck rover for his size, but he doesn't get enough possessions for that role. Gets beaten more than not in the ruck. Play him FF/ CHF rotating with Henderson. He can ruck in the forwardline. Waite can swing forward as the 3rd marking option. I have faith in Waite to present forward when we need him.
Lets see how Hammer goes this weekend in the Ants. He'll be interesting to throw into our line up. I guess he's a bit rusty atm.

Browne: put your head over the ball son. Where's your reputation for toughness at the ball and man? Gone. Weak effort. Lost boy.
Joseph: not a very good year. Time for a rest.

Last game before the break.
Home ground advantage (if that's what you'd call it).
Gotta throw everything we can at this game for a win.
This game will separate the men from the boys because Freo are a good team...and they are big, fast and tough.
Are we up for a team like Freo? Time will tell.

I agree that Kreuz needs a break (I've got a horroible feeling we're in danger of turning him into Josh Fraser ver 2.0), but up against Sandilands this week we need all the @#$%&! help we can get.

Time to swing the axe good and properly. Although we'd won our last couple of games before last night, a few of the blokes who had put on an ordinary display had been like that for a few weeks.

I hate to say it, but I think Setanta needs to go out and in comes Henderson. Setanta has been out of sorts ever since the Hawthorn game.

Hope Hendo plays a blinder in the VFL this week.

Yep these would be my changes - I'd also try to get McLean back in the side if he plays well today for the Bullants.

Jacobs a bit stiff but Hampson adds more to the side with his athleticism.

Good post Jimmae. Agree with that ... mostly  .

You know I disagree with Hads and I'll pick you up on it. Hads has been getting better each game, he's tough, mature and composed ... won't deny I'm a fan.

On him just "cracking the 20 disposal barrier for the first time this season" - this was just his 3rd game this season coming back from injury, he's missed alot of footy. His numbers have increased every game, especially the CP, clearances and tackles which is a bbig part of what I'd imagine he would be measured on.

Saying that he "barely got free at all once the stoppage was over" - well that's not his job but something that'll get better as his match fitness improves. His job is to make it to as many contests as possible, contest the ball, win it and get it out which he did well and often. His handballing was good, cleared the congestion and released others into space.

But apart from Hads, your ins and outs make sense. Browne had me fuming in that game, if he's not a hard nut, tough at the contest then what is he to this team? Bad game from him. IMO the role change from negater to defender has not suited AJ, problem is that Carrots gets those roles these days. Really would like to see Lucas come back in as well.

Carrots just about top 5 in our B&F this year. :screwy: What are you smoking? He at least broke even with Harvey, so the scribes tell us.

Agree, was BOG v Freo at Subi last year and he ain't going anywhere.

We're not going to make 6 changes.

To all those advocating the dropping of Setanta (who I agree was very poor last night), ho would you play at Full Forward? Don't say Kreuzer. Henderson is a CHF. Waite plays his best footy up the ground.

Our side has been decimated by injuries, until this week, so we haven't been able to get our structure right yet.

I would make 3 definite inclusions
In: Bower, Yarran, Henderson
Out Browne, (Robbo or Scotty), (Thornton or AJ)

The MC could decide to bring in McLean for Hadley (who was one of our better players), and Grigg and Lucas could also be considerd for one of the others mentioned.

On the other hand, even just bringing in Yarran and Bower (for definitely Browne and maybe Robbo) would change the structure enough so that 2 changes might be all we need.
