That may be the case, but I dare say it'd give you the shits more to see them running around for another club.

Gibbs, 21, has agreed to terms for 2011-12 in a deal believed to be worth $850,000.

Happy he signed for sure and like others I was a little surprised it was not a three year deal.

If 850K is the number I wonder if that may not be a little steep...

Perhaps there is an option for a third year based on performance etc??

$850k for first round draft pick playing over 50 games is just about right.

His next contract in 2012 is going to be a headache that likely be $600k+ a year...Murph & Kreuzer will be on about the same.

Is Waldron still in the country to be recruited as our list manager?

On face value, it's a bit rich for a talented kid with plenty of upside.
On the flipside I predict he will be worth that much in 2011-2012 if it produces a FLAG; and that's what it's all about.

Good chance of a FLAG as the young ones like Lucas, Yarran, Garlett, Robinson, Davies, Walker, Betts, Hampson/Jacobs/ Warnock combo, Henderson, Austin, Russell etc develop around Gibbs, let alone the stars who will continue to grow like Kreuzer, Murphy and Bower.
Geez we have a young team with plenty of upside: a team which has already played finals and sitting at 5-4 after 9 rounds in 2010.

We'll win a flag or 3 or 3 with Gibbs in the team. Of course GWS will be knocking, but Gibbs would have to decide whether he plays in a successful side or be paid plenty more in a developing side. You'd pay to play for Carlton in this decade.

$425k a season after the year he had last year and the ability to slot just about anywhere for the team this year is warranted, but I suspect the reported figure is a little higher than the actual (usually is, just to scare off other clubs down the road).

I actually suspect the figure would be pretty close to the mark if certain performance criteria are met i.e. B&F finish, All Australian selection, Brownlow etc. He finished in the top 3 in the B&F last year so $425k is pretty cheap irrespective of his age.
I am not sure on your logic that the figure quoted scares off other clubs. If Gibbs put himself on the market at the end of this season he would get more than 425k from plenty of clubs.
By deciding to stay at Carlton he is playing for less money, no different to Selwood.

He did and there was a bit more fluff, but that was about as much Footy Show as I could handle. :banghead:

What about GIBBINS? That was my favourite. I have no idea who used to always say it though.

Remember that that's around 5% of the total cap, which is nothing compared to Judd, but it's not bad for a 21 year old. I'd be hoping that there are performance clauses (and that seems likely).

I don't think it'd be significantly different from $425k anyway; at least $400k, but I'm only guessing as to the mind games Icke would play with other clubs. Market value seems to be a concept foreign to half the AFL.
