Agree. However, it is also the coaching team's job to ensure that players enter the game with the right mindset and put in the required effort on a consistent basis.

To an extet 29 - it is mostly each players responsibility on an individual basis to ensure they are optimally aroused to perform to the level required. This is one of the major reasons we fail against Essendon*. The build up within the walls of Princes Park is huge...the coach (and staff) are so fearful of losing that his intervention into getting each player 'up' goes overboard, and thus leads the players on the downward slop of the 'inverted U hypothesis'.
When playing Essendon*, and to an extent Collingwood, the players are 'over-aroused' and therefore unable to peform to their optimal capacity. We are mentally 'over-prepared' and over-aroused.

It's a basic form of psycho-science that has been around for generations.

Check out anything on the "inverted U hypothesis" online.

The coach and staff should not be trying to intervene too much into pregame psychology. What may work for one player will have a completely detrimental effect for another.

Carlton supporters use to go ape sh*t when we kept playing Russell, but now he has come on as a player and easily reflects his pick at number 7 in 2005.

From his player bio

Draft History
2004 NAB AFL Draft 1st round selection (Carlton) No. 9 overall.

Soemone said he was Pick 11 earlier today

Pick 7 or pick 9, 2004 or 2005 I knew what he meant. Russel should have at least been pick 7.

The way he was going during the pre-season I would imagine he had a nervous breakdown. The world was going to end and he knew it was because he could see and predict things others couldn't see.

Dont be fooled by Carltons magnificent win over St Kilda.

Ratten is not up to coaching at this level.Perhaps Robert Harvey's knowledge of St Kilda may have assisted the coaching panel.

Paul Roos is the answer to Carlton's future premierships

Now I'm not exactly Ratts's biggest fan not by a long shot but even I have to roll the eyes at this one...

Dont worry about Synbad.
He loves the Blues as much as anyone and he'd be absolutely rapt to see them beat Geelong and St Kilda. Yes he gets passionate and loves to entice a bit of debate but only to ensure we dont become complacent or accept second best ever again.

I didnt think that Ratten would stamp a distinctive style on a Carlton side during his time as Coach and get the best out of his players - but he obviously has.

This team could be anything - they could even be the new purloiners by season's end.

So how'd we beat Geelong?

Ratts rang Stephen O'Rielly on Anzac Day to get a few pointers.

I thought he was just trying to give us a little reminder of what it was like when Synners posted....

This is not having a dig at you Goltz. But it just made me think.

To some degree, it does say a lot of supporters who voice out during the bad times compared to those who only voice out during the good times. The latter may keep quiet and completely go into their shells after successive losses and choose not to be involved with the club for whatever reason.

What may seem like supporters kicking a club when their down, are actually showing real anger stemmed from true passion.

I put my hand up as a guilty party. When the Blues lose, I get really down. Can't and won't read the papers and try not to read about anything Carlton related. I admire those like Synbad who do, and are not afraid to speak their minds (regardless whether the majority agree or disagree).
