Rebels set sights on Visy Park
Quote:
MELBOURNE Storm's former Visy Park headquarters is shaping as the most likely training and administrative home for new Super 15 franchise the Rebels.

With rugby league's Storm vacating the venue for new digs at Swan Street's AAMI Park, their former home has firmed as the Rebels' most likely base. Other sites in the running are Hawthorn's traditional home ground of Glenferrie Oval and St Kilda's soon-to-be-abandoned facility at Moorabbin.

''At this stage the Visy Park option is looking by far the best,'' a source said yesterday. ''The place is all set up and ready to go, there's nothing we'd really need to do.''

The decision, which needs to be made soon, would be a major financial boost for the Carlton Football Club, which acts as landlord of the stadium.

Incredibly, in all their years of planning, the VRU have never once viewed this as an option - even with the know\ledge that the Storm would be moving their training location. They're still holding out for Boroondara Council to make a decision on Glenferrie Oval. Now virtually a cow paddock, it would be the logical base given the schools and rugby legacy in the area.

That Carlton could have another tenant, and one of a higher standing in the community than the Storm, would never be knocked back - however I'd argue vehemently that the words "major financial boost" is a little bit of a stretch.

I wonder how much influence Brian Waldron had on Visy Park being an option? He was the Rebels CEO and he might have been the driving force behind this move.

good stuff at anyrates - I like the idea of the rebels sharing the space. We might learn how to pack tackle as the games look much the same at times.

Hated going to that little shithole of a ground.

It used to be a mud heap.

I can still remember John Peck & later, Peter Hudson killing us

Visy would be an ideal location for the Rebels players...very convenient for training and the compulsory Melbourne Uni Law degree they have to do.
