Thats a fair back down from us betting we could get another pick after we realised that broken down mids weren't actually worth 1st round picks.

As wrong as falsely claiming Brock McLean hasn't played a good game in years?

This trade seems to be turning out to be another; O'Reilly, Devonport and McGuane trade.

The only common denominator in the period of those trades and the McLean trade is: Kernahan, Ratten and Gleeson.

Kernahan, Ratten and Gleeson were players at the time of the O'Reilly, Devonport and McGuane Trades. Now they are involved in these type of trades as Coach and Board members.

Can this be a case of "Old Habits Die Hard?"

If so, they were after-all, students of the "Quick Fix Master" John Elliott.

I thought Carlton's recent recruiting policy was not to trade away first round draft pick's, unless it was for a player of the calibre of Judd. It look's like it also involves players of the calibre of McLean.

I'm not sure we needed an extra in and under anyway.

I don't see Carrazzo as an outside mid which he seems to be (?), as his disposal is not a strong suit. He should've been physically prepared during the preseason to be an inside mid along with Hadley.

Carrazzo and Hadley as our inside mids with Robbo developing in the ants as an inside mid.

Judd, Murph, Simmo, Gibbs etc. as outside mids with Juddy to work inside role if needed.

Anyway we have Brock now so hopefully he improves his deficiencies to be a solid contributor.

Nah moshe, there's a big difference. I've never bagged those you mention...but that's not the point.

The point is McLean was pick 5 in his draft, he is a seasoned campaigner, touted as a future captain, has runs on the board, and he was in such good shape preseason, he was stirring Juddy about the Princes Park time trials because McLean was super fit before the season started. Everyone, including McLean was excited and confident in what he was going to do for CFC in 2010. He was not selected to be an outside receiver, and he's decided to play that game a few times since the NAB.

The others you mention are starting their careers and building up. We selected them with our draft picks not knowing what we would get (other than Warnock who only cost us a mid 20 2nd round draft pick).

Big difference.

You are obviously impressed with McLean in that he's lived up to your expectations?

The last line is a gigantic leap of faith. I'm not particularly impressed just yet. However, it's early days. I'm commenting on the fact that the criticisms started DURING (yes flowering DURING) the NAB Cup game in Sydney. Let me say that again. DURING HIS FIRST NON H&A GAME FOR THE CLUB. That's when this started. Do i expect this to change, even if he starts playing well? Nah!! No way.

Like Sydney Blue saying "well, I was a little hasty about Setanta, wasn't I". Or any detractors acknowledging Houlihan's last 17 games most of which have had him in the top 3 - 7 players (including our best in the club's first final in 8 years).

Nah, Brock hasn't lived up to MY expectations yet, but then either has Carlton. I still have my members ticket, and been supporting and going for a l-o-o-ong time. They don't always meet my expectations, but I do give them a few more chances.

This thread is a little unfair to Mclean IMO...if we can give a coach (who I do not rate) 3 years plus to prove himself...surely we can give Brock a few games....

so do we forget his previous 6 years with Melbourne and just start rating him now? personally i do not rate a player on just 5 or so games.

Well given that we can't turn back the clock we have no choice but to rate him from now going forward...same goes with Ratts....he is here to stay so we critique his performances and hope he improves and the same applies to Mclean..it is very debatable whether he's worth a pick 11 and most of us would concede he isn't...but since we seem to have unearthed a gem in Lucas with pick 12 I do not see any problem as yet. Keep in mind had we kept pick 11 we probably would have used it as part of the Fev trade anyway...who's to know?
