Pokies... sigh. It'll turn good coin for the club but it's a sad way to fill the coffers.

Good news. Will make the club financially secure for a few years to come.

Yet I hate pokies and what they have done to the community. The less of them the better

Great news but ... I know ... both of these are in the heartland of the respective clubs and used as such by the supporters respectively. What impact will the change over have to these respective groups regarding the scheduling of get togethers, etc..
I'm a bit concerned that the impact might be big on the bottom line with both of these establishments once the change occurs, but I guess the big boys are aware of the implications, etc. I guess time will tell and what the fine print will cover.

Pokies are cash cows Surrey. The folks pumping their fifty dollar bills into the machines wouldn't know Chris Judd from Kevin Rudd.

This would be great news (financially speaking) for the club if true...

Just wondering which bit is the most great..
the part where we take money off battlers and struggling clubs,or the bit where we get to gain off exploiting people, and maybe help create a new generation of gambling addicts.
Gee I'm about bursting at the seams here.
Really glad the club is looking to improve the culture, and move out of the dinosaur age.

We are supposed to have sympathy for these 'struggling' clubs, why? This isn't the 1980s anymore, we aren't this big bullying power club that everyone envies, and need to use all the advantage we can get.

I was rather hoping the news was that Gibbs had re-signed.

It's not that I don't get how it makes us money...I do..and sure not expecting any pats on the back for my sentiments.
Forgive me if I find it hard to get all warm and fuzzy about this deal...
and BM for that matter.

I hate the pokies. Hate that successive state Governments have let them become such a huge part of the fabric of society in Victoria.

But it looks like they're here to stay, so from a pragmatic point of view, I'm happy for my club to get a slice of the action. The AFL takes sponsorship money from bookmakers, as do a majority of clubs. Most (all?) Victorian clubs profit from pokies. Our game promotes booze and junk food too.

No-one's hands are clean, really.

Unfortunately, I don't think any club can afford to be principled when it comes to revenue sources. The market is very tight and hugely competitive, and clubs take whatever they can get.

Oh, and I don't think Carlton is anywhere near the point where we can label the Richmonds and Western Bulldogs of the world as 'struggling clubs'. Compared to West Coast and Adelaide and Collingwood, Carlton is a struggling club. This isn't the 1980's anymore... financially, Carlton is middle of the pack.

You're forgiven. I don't think much of pokies either, but business is business. :|

Well, given that we a the 'Sith" of the competition, it only stands to reason we are involved in Pokies.
