Counter productive?
Does Ratts backing down send the wrong message to the players?

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/r ... -s7lb.html

"Ratten told his players in the rooms after the match that this week at training it would be ''18 on 18'' - with last Saturday night's 18 playing the best 18 from its VFL side, the Northern Bullants.

At least the Bullants players would show some passion and ''have a crack'' to get a game, Ratten reasoned.

In the event, yesterday's training session was not full-ground match practice of the variety threatened by the coach because, once the initial anger calmed, the reasoned voices of medicos and conditioning staff advised that that form of heavy training would be counter-productive at this stage of the season."

Would these be the same people that prevent players practicing goal kicking ...

... you can have your players fit and in great condition all year but if they can't convert from 30m out in front, well ... alot has changed in footy but the highest score at the end of the game still wins the game.

Probably why coaches opt for things like 4am swims in the bay as punishment for poor efforts. Cant run them into the ground and expect to win on the next weekend in the modern game.

Still i could handle a loss if the players at least showed some ticker.

You have to wonder what's going on? Everything seems to be reactionary and without planning and thought and in the end nothing really changes anyway.

He'll learn not to make threats in the heat of the moment that he can't follow through on. It's not the end of the world, but you do undermine yourself when you do that (ask any parent).

Did we lose because they didn't try hard enough, because they played dumb football, or because Essendon* are just better than us? Ratts' response would seem to suggest he thinks the former.

A position also adopted by many of the forum members over the weekend!

I would have gone with a hitout.
The conditioning department are not there to control the team.

Mouthguards in and 1/2 hour of hard tackling and bumping. If players got injured so be it. Bower has missed 2 weeks in a training mishap without the gloves being taken off.

I think you're leaving out the part where the training session went for twice as long, and he apparently got them wound up in the contact drills.

Running a scratch match mid-week in this day and age just doesn't happen. I might be a bit off, but I think you can count on one hand how many times this has happened in the last 10 years. Pagan did it once.

..also, it's highly doubtful that the roo's can crack a finals berth, we're still an outside chance.. ..so we've gotta train 'em hard, but not too hard ya dig..

I'm not sure about the old 'punishment' training sessions.

Think I'd prefer maybe a few honesty discussion sessions where obvious failings are addressed and then focused on in the follow up training sessions.

If both players or coaches aren't being honest about their performances then we'll never progress into late September.
