What actually happened to that theory? No one has been able to answer it for me. :banghead:

I think we should get Paul Roos.
Not saying that Ratts doesn't have a great knowledge of the game, but he is not managing the players' output as best as possible.

We need the best, and at the moment the best option looks to be to try and lure Roos out of retirement. Add to that a thorough interview process for any keen assistant coaches who want to put their hand up.

I also mentioned the Pratt ethos earlier in the year but was willing to give Ratts the benefit of the doubt until the end of the season. Remember it is still only 3 games in. But I agree with everyone else that losing to Essendon* in the manner we did was disgraceful.

When Port got Laidley I asked why didn't we make a play for him. Now it seems we did and he was keen to come but Ratts vetoed it. If that is true, biggest mistake in Ratts gameplan ever. :banghead:

Maybe we need a Malthouse to put the wind up these players. Don't like his gameplan either, but he would quickly sort them out one way or the other.

But it seems that 2 versions are being spruiked...the 1 you relay here and the 1 where ratts wanted him and the club vetoed it.

Chinese whispers? or did it never happen?

Can we please keep this in perspective.

Sack the Coach? Bring in another coach. That means gut the team and put out a 5 year plan so the new coach is secure. And with draft picks limited with GC and west syd, 2025 looks good.

Lets not forget this:
Carlton were nearly made the top 4 last year. With two rounds to go, they were a chance of top 4 finish.
Carlton beat Cats last year
Carlton beat the bulldogs last year
Carlton pushed Saints to within 6points last year.

Yes, Carlton lost to Bombers last year twice. Yes Twice. Who made the finals, Carlton!. Who didn't make the finals? da Bombers.Yeah the loss hurt, Carlton couldn't of played any worse that night and we were a chance of winning going in to the last quarter.
For some reason we just play to Bombers level, but can match it with the top teams. I would prefer that scenario then the other way around.

Carlton has lost the best full forward in the game, its going to take a while to adjust gameplans/strategies to find the one that works best. You can't just work this out in preseason and it will work in real time. There are usually opposition teams that have a defensive strategy which impede our forward line strategy. Plus you need the midfield to get the pill.

I'm all for a change of coach if it is right for the club, but at this stage it is not the right time. You can't judge a coach by one game. Nearly finishing top 4 last year and nearly beating Brisbane at the Gabba last week showed that he isn't doing a bad job with no judd/bower/fev at the club in that game.

A new coach is not always the answer. Sometimes it pays off, but sometimes the club can go backwards aswell

Roos didn't want Laidley, but we want him now?
We wanted Pagan and what did he deliver? Best coach around at the time.
Tigers wanted Wallace from a successful stint at Bulldogs, what happened?

Just watch out for what you wish for.

Brett Ratten doesn't have the power to veto appointments within the football department. He can have an input - but that's about as far as it goes. I'm not aware of the Laidley situation, but am aware of the other potential candidate that we possibly shouldn't have let slip through our fingers. That said - not one of us is privy to the inner sanctum and workings of the football department. And in reading all these posts I'm really seeing a host of questions that no one really knows the answer to.

Are our 1-3 year players getting fast-tracked in an appropriate development program?

Does our leadership group understand the role 'Leading Teams' has placed upon them, or with Ray McLean still on hand - are they expecting others to lead and they will follow?

Is it appropriate that David Teague coach the Northern Bullants, yet still provide senior Carlton players with instruction when video analysis is done during the week?

Is the relationship between Football Department and Board a healthy one?

Can someone explain to me what Robert Harvey does?

Are the staff that satisfied with the new facilities that the perception is that things will now take care of themselves?

Does Wes Lofts need to walk past a few offices at the club just to frighten the shit out of a few people there?

Is it wrong of me to invoke the spirit of Laurie Kerr with a Ouija board at a séance this Friday night?

Who wants to come to the séance?

Saints still beat Pies with Roo off the ground, so clearly it's not all about Roo.

But I'm sure you will continue with your endless CFC propaganda Cazz.

So one player can make a coach look good but a bunch of players all playing with no ticker can't make a coach look bad.

I can just see Kruezer in the rooms after the game blaming his shit game on the coach............. not.

Yes, I have always been of the opinion that the focus on the coach over simplifies things. The success of a football club depends on many factors and all cogs in the machine have to fit and work to be successful. Just have a look at Port who have gone from a club used as an example to the laughing stock of the comp - with the same coach in charge.

But it is clear something is wrong - I have no idea hat it is - but the consistent inconsistency from week to week is far greater then it is for other clubs. I hope leading teams got a feeling for it and communicated it to the board.

Where's the propaganda exactly? I just asked a question based on your statement. I think it is fair to say the Saints are a few years in advance of us.

I have no sympathy for anyone this week. The team was piss poor. You haven't seen me come out in support of them anywhere since the game ended.

As far as Ratten goes, he is no different to where many Coaches have been and will be for as long as the AFL exists. Supporters always want the Coach sacked after a poor performance. Harvey is flavour of the month this week and last month he was the 1st to be sacked. Thompson was gone years ago now he can do no wrong. Last week Knights was gone after Lloyds comments now he is safe.

Next week when we beat the Crows all will be joy, joy, joy again except for those Anti Ratten posters with agendas

Regards Cazzesman

OK, my bad.
From memory, they had a crap season with 10 wins and maybe a draw, so thats kinda why l assumed they didn't make finals. Should of checked that first, ok give me the home hardware prize :P

In most years you need 12 wins atleast to play finals. Carlton had 13 wins.

My whole point was that Ratten has done a great job so far and you shouldn't rock the boat and get a new coach based on one bad loss. If fev kicked that goal after the siren against hawks last year, we would of been 14 wins last year.

If a pattern continues, sure you look at new options

The raw numbers indicate Ratts has done a great job. Sure we are winning more now, but I think a coach of any real ability at all could of got a team with 3 number 1 picks, and two of the top 10 players in the comp winning more than 4 games a season.

By the same logic Grant Thomas was super coach. He took a team which won 5 games in 2002, to 16 wins and a Preliminary Final in 2004.

Point is this, has Ratts improved as a coach at all in this time? No

Does anyone seriously think that our improvement in 2008 to 2009 was to do with improved structures and game plans employed by Ratts? No

Should he be sacked now? No

Should he be sacked if we are 1-8? No. Well only if he has completely lost the players, which there is no evidence this has happened.

Should he be sacked at season's end if we have a fairly injury free run and we still see no system or discerable plan? Yes

I personally think, like BlueMan's visionary posts, we will improve second half of the season which will most likely save Ratts.

Then at seasons end, bulster the off-field staff in a big way, with more experienced assistants.

Freo have their off-field structures working now, and we are starting to see how big a difference that makes on-field. Maybe if we do the same Ratts can thrive.

Saints, Cats and Hawks have a team committment to assist their stars in doing what they do eg. blocking, shepherding, tackling and presenting an option. Their players work consistently week by week for each other and know and understand their roles.
Not sure our MC's message is getting through to our blokes. They've had just on 3 years to get some consistent fundamentals set in place.

Most of the time supporters ask questions of there coaching panel after a sustained run of inconsistent or poor performances.

I for one have never rated ratts as a coach, f'in great player, one of the toughest players ever to pull on the cfc jersey, but, can he coach? I think no!! We have a pretty good list, surely player for players better then bombers, but as ratts as coach we can't beat them? Can anyone tell me 1 good quality ratts has as a coach? Apart from being a good bloke, I can't think of anything! I realize it's super early in the season, but could thngs get mch worse if we got a new coach tomorrow? Time for sticks to show sum ticker n prove he can put the club before his mate!
