Yes that's exactly my point.. We tried to slow it down too early, turned it over, and let them back in. They got a goal, got their tails up and the momentum swung their way. We should never have slowed it down in the first place when we were dominating play

Few carlton players blowing pretty hard with their hands on their hips when tigers snapped their first.

Yeah good point. I just feel that against the top sides we're going to have to make the most of it when the momentums in our favour, because after all thats what the top sides do. Changing the pace of the game really lets them back in. But I suppose our fitness will improve a lot over the next month

We'll go slight underdogs, but let's not over rate the Brions, they've gained Fev, but it's not as if they didn't already have a decent Full Forward. Bradshaw killed us in the Elim last year. So they have upgraded from a 60=70 goal team riented FF to a 90 goal FF who can be brilliant and awful. We have gained Jamo, Waite Walker McLean, Warnock and a few others so we go in looking okay. The guys who kill us are Black and Brown. We don't have a big defence so Brown and Fev will have stength advantage. We have to take Fev's space and force him wide, put extreme pressure on the ball carrier. Absolutely stop them running out of defence and get Big K and Warnock near Brown. If we win this one, we can flog the Dons and be 3-0

Good post and I agree gerry atric (however I'm pretty sure Walker played in the elimination final).
It will be tough for the Lions only having a 5 day break after tough match against the Eagles.
At this stage the weather forecast is for showers/storms on Thur evening which would benefit us by making life tougher for Brown and Fev.
The Lions deserve to be favourites however if we get off to a good start I'm not so sure they'll chase us down this time.

this article states that bower will be out of the game due to some upper leg injury sustained at training. bad news!

Indeed it is. Guess that settles the Waite debate.

Well personally im quietly confident about this game for lots of reasons and licking my lips at some juicy odds too.

Sure they have lots of blokes for us to worry about....Drummond, Sherman, Brennan and the old perennials such as Brown, Black, Power and some new psycho full forward recruit they have picked up....however....lets not forget they have a few to worry about too.
Especially our new and improved multi pronged forward line and can especially see Betts and Yarran causing a nice bit of mayhem if they get enough delivery again.

Still think when all is said and done, whoever wins the clearances will win the match.
Oh, and another 80 + tackles would not go astray either !

The article speculates, with no facts to back it up.

Simon White should come in if Bower is out.

Keys to our success is:

a) midfield - we have to beat them here
- good challenge for our rucks - probably going to be the best ruck match-up of the next 10years
- must continue (but improve) our performance from last week

b) quell influence of brown, black, drummond, brennan and power
- am sure we will start with thornton on brown, with waite in reserve
- i am tossing up b/w gibbs & walker to deal with black & brennan - must restrict black but also need to run off him; brennan big danger, even if he looks quiet for most of the game
- AJ/JR for power & drummond
- or, perhaps, carrazzo for drummond? leaving JR sweeping off half back?

bower = big loss for us (but he was on 1 leg in last year's final)
5 day break = increases the degree of difficulty for them
fev = bradshaw from last year +/-...
hope jamo is right to go

don't reckon adcock will play. 5 days from an ankle 2 games into the year = not worth it.

The reports from the Ants games seem to suggest that White might be a good option for defence.
I would rather we dont take either O'hAilpin or Hendo out of the forward line to make up numbers in defence. And even Waite for that matter.
We need to keep our forward line dangerous and not take out players from there if possible.

I'd like to know what the @#$%&! has happened to Austin?!

What about Grigg in defence?

Usually nervous about Lions games, especially Gabba ones, but not this time.

Losing Bower makes it all the more tougher unfortunately.

Friends of mine up in Gold Coast just bought tickets (one for me  ) and they were told they are very lucky as the game is nearly a sell out. Who is this Fev guy? He has some pulling power.

Could just play with two talls in defence. Flank them with Russell and Walker and try generate drive from the back half and get them thinking about us.

Worry would be them then putting Clarke forward but that could throw their forward plans out and confuse them.

Waite will need to play defence. We won't win if we let Fev and Brown play one on one. Waite and Russell need to help out and create run. Bower is a huge loss, who will step up and take the game on from defence?

He's never looked comfortable that side of the ground, let alone in the D50.

One Niall article and a shady forum thread do not an injury make.
