I won't go into a long list of pro's and con's, most have been covered. I will make 3 observations though:

1. Betts had his best season last year, but still was only getting 10-12 possessions a game. He needed to get that up to 20-25 a game. Last night was a massive step for him. If he can get 20-25 possession a game, look out!

2. Carazzo is a genuine ball magnet, and his disposal has improved out of site. Keep up that form and the midfield match ups for opposition coaches become a nightmare.

3. Richmond are useless. We did what we needed to do, what we should have done. The next weeks will tell a big tale.

Whats even scarier is members of the so called recruiting department making assertions or judgements after only one game!! :yikes:

One win against a team that will finish in the bottom three for sure.
Lets wait until round 9 when we have played
Lions away
Essendon*( not a bad side going on last night and a team we find difficult to play)
Crows away
Geelong
Collingwood
Saints
Port away
Hawks

Whilst Russell has improved heaps, lets face it he was given more opportunties than most
Playing Shitmond is a small bench mark. Russell had it easy Thursday night

We still played crap footy at times
Poor disposal could have really hurt us at times
In the next 8 weeks it will if we dont get better.

Need to stop overdosing on those positive pills Keogh. We will take it one week at a time with our game day reviews. By the way, was there anything you liked about our performance?

Russells' improvement doesnt count because he had good opportunity for it to occur?
I've heard it all now

JR himself has admitted that getting dropped to the ants last year gave him the spark and motivation he needed. Is it responsible for his stellar finish to last year, or would these same results have emerged if he continued to get picked each week? I personally believe the former, but we'll never know for sure, and frankly I couldn't care less.

Make no mistake
With the concessions GWS and GC are getting teams need to have got their recruiting right by now.

We have had the best picks over anyone else in the comp in the last 5 years or so so we should be ready to not just make the eight but win a few finals this year.

We were ok but lost the momentum by playing tempo footy way too early and allowing Richmond back in the contest.
Wont get away wit it in the next 8 weeks.
The defence is good.
We lack a forward who can take a pack mark.
O'hailpin is not good overhead
Henderson is young
Waite isnt a pack marker
We were not exposed in this area Thur night
We lack genuine leg speed
Against a quick team we will be found wanting if we turn the ball over
Want Gartlett in the side
And White Reckon he might be another gold rookie find for us
Anderson can go and my patience with Walker is growing thin. His disposal is shocking.
Good to see Waite and murphy play well
Russell was given more chances than any other player. Fact. He is an ok player who has got better. Dont fall over yourself because he got 26 touches. That means almost @#$%&! all these days.

It was an ordinary team we beat. The next 8 weeks will show us where we are really at.

Keogh, why the hell do you want a 4th tall defender in the side...

DO you think it was the fact that we went to tempo or the fact that we didnt do it well in the first and second?

In my opinion we had to do it. It was a hot night and no team could have played like we did in the first 15 mins for a whole quarter at this time of year. look at the bombers last night. I bet they wished they has tempo footy in their plans. It was smart by us and Ratts applauded the leaders for their choices. We missed a few targets that put us on the back foot. We will have to get better at it as it is important to our gameplan.

Russells inclusion to the backline has improved it. He plays attacking footy which by the sounds of it is what you like. He is a fine player in my opinion. Developing players what clubs are about. He was given every opportunity to succeed because the club and half the fan base could see he had the tools.

A pack marker would be great but not the be all and end all. Geelong, Dogs, and Pies all have good seasons without packmarkers. Kruezer could drop back for the odd mark when he gets back in form with his marking.
The good thing about Setanta the other night was that he didnt get outmarked. Even at times when he looked out of the contest he managed to get there and spoil. If he can do that consistantly against better teams it will be handy.

Good point LL, especially in the first half, he was very good and his vision and execution at times was superb ... thought the senior guys stood up really well in the absence of Judd, especially Carazzo, Scotland and Houla.

Don't accept that.

After a thorough pre-season and freshen up for the 1st round we should've flat out hammered the tigers in the first quarter to build a massive lead which we could've then controlled for the remaining 3 qtrs.

I accept we can't go flat out for 4 qtrs, but 15 minutes in when we are completely dominating is not the time to shutdown and let the opposition regroup.

Sorry Psycho it was just my attempt at some jesting for Gilly's amusement.

I guess you had to be there....................................hey wait a minute   ...............................Gilly have you ever seen Psycho and Jim from Sunbury in the same room at the same time?

I should have known it.............................

I told Gilly Jim's insight into all things Carlton reminded me of someone on TC and now the penny has dropped. At first I thought Jim was Keogh but now I'm not so sure. Mind you, judging by Keogh's last post I'm still undecided

Agree that playing tempo footy when we have control of the game has hurt us over the last season and a bit. The time t play temp footy is when the opposition is in control. Slow it down, keep possession, then take it on from there. When we are flying, we should keep flying.

Re Russell. Disagree that 26 possessions doesn't mean anything. He doesn't get the easy handball receives that a Scotland gets, or the chip sideways possessions that Thornton gets. He works hard for most of his. Even in last year's improvement, Russell struggled to get more than 20 possessions a game. For him to get 26, and use most of them well, is a massive step forward for him. If he can average 25 possessions a game off half back, and use them well, he will become hugely important for us.

Question for those who were at the game, because I only saw the telecast - who did Russell play on? Curious to know if he was able to negate his opponent whilst getting those 26 touches.

Ah Cazzeman my old sparring partner
Im better looking than Jim
I reckon if we are 5 and 4 after 9 rounds I would be happy.

As for tempo footy we did it too early in the first quarter and we lost momemtum.
we are still a work in progress

I really want Gartlett in the team.
we need more leg speed. Yarran, Betts and Gartlett will work and I would personally tool up
And White might turn out a good pickup. Will get his chance when a defender goes down.
according to our coach Jamo will be right.
If he wasnt going to be then White would be a good choice to replace him.

Rehearsed with a new band today Cazz. the singer loves PT so he is a top bloke.

PROS:

Boys won by the bare minimum I expected.
A win is a win, no matter who we play against in this comp
Backline sensational
Midfield sensational
Forwardline sensational.
Rucks naturally a win for us these days: Kreuzer is our #1 ruckman.

I hope everyone is finally convinced that Carrazzo is elite when he plays withing his limitations; all players have limits.
Betts will become a superstar in 2010.
Rapt that Setanta is recognised as our #1 Key forward.
Houla, Scotland and Simmo's leadership and experience was great...all class.
Murphy, Gibbs, Yarran are elite.

The cobwebs have been shaken off. Bring on the Lions for our next big win.
Won without JUDD, (fevloa, stevens, kernahan, diesel, jezza ....and crosswell)

We've got plenty of height considering Austin, Hampson, Jacobs, Davies, White...are waiting in the wings.
I still am confident we will lose only 5-7 games in the H & A.

CONS

No many really
I didn't think we gave away goals because of tempo footy; they scored some good goals, albeit only 9 kicked (no issue)
If anything we didn't attack our goals to our full potential.
Bower's short passes going sideways.
Simmo's right foot (piss off the boomerangs Simmo, no one can mark them)
I'd like to see more hard leading for longer periods...ahead of the kicker.

CHANGES

No real need for now...depends on Armfield being fit or not.

Hadley for Anderson (I thought Ando did really well, am confident he can plug holes; peripheral atm)
Armfield for Walker or Robinson.

OR ...just if fit...Armfield for Anderson is a safe bet.

I'd take a step to the left if I was you Keogh. The big fella is bound to send down a lightening strike it you keep telling fibs, because you're never happy with anything CFC does
