Courtesy of the internet (and TC ) I now know that Brock McLean is pretty much the worst footballer in the comp. Can't run, bad skills, won't shake the hands of opponents, poor overhead, doesn't win clearances. This is of course based on three games in the NAB Cup / Challenge.

What I am wondering is whether Carlton fans have always been so quick to judge before the internet came along? Were there people in the outer jumping up and down in intra-club games in 1986 claiming that Jon Dorotich was going to be our weakest link? Did fans nudge each other in amusement in February 1993 and declare that they just knew Steven Oliver would head back to the bush? Were they whispering before the 1970 grand final that Barassi had no gameplan and that he needed to tell the players to handball and play on at all costs? Were fans at training in the late 60's telling all and sundry that Bruce Doull had to be picked in the seniors?

In short, were we more patient before the internet came along? Is it now a race to see exactly who can write off player x in the shortest amount of time so that said poster can claim the 'glory' when that player fails?

We all knew who could and couldn't play or at least had an opinion, the only difference is that there were less people to tell.

Living in sydney, the internet has been a godsend, i can remember having to wait til friday night or saturday morning to get the melbourne newspaper with the teaam listings, or waiting until the sun went down on the weekend to hear abc 774 faintly on the radio on a weekend. except for being at more games, we have better coverage of afl and carlton games than people in melbourne. Still nothing beats being there, but we have the next best thing

Pre-internet it was 'league teams' on a thursday night, anticpation on friday, excitement on sat morning heading to the game with mates talking about the team, post mortems in the pub after and at sat night parties, 'world of sport' sundays, stir up your work mates (or cop it) monday morning. Tues/wed footy drought.

..... and I never went to a pre-season practice match! ...... I've been to 3 this pre-season so internet obviously leads to unhealthy obsession!
